Sell Ubuntu Systems to Businesses

Recently Dell refused to sell their Ubuntu PCs to a small non-profit business. Please do sell them in future, letting the market for the Ubuntu PCs expand however it chooses.

Make the dell ubuntu models available through the main webpage

Instead of having the model listings on a different webpage ( www.dell.com/open) have these models available from the product search you have on the main page or a link available through the main page (www.dell.com)

When I go to dell.com and I search for the product model numbers I never can find them I have to go to the other page and then I see it. The only thing I saw on the main page is a small flash ad which then takes you to the page.

Why cant you place these models with the other models on your page.........

Properly warn consumers about ~3GB Max useable RAM limit with Vista 32bit

Only Vista 64 bit can use 4GB of ram or higher. Vista 32bit (such as the recommended Home premium), like XP (32bit) will only report a max of ~3.1GB.

Therefore, it behoves Dell to properly warn consumers at time of configuration that they will not be using the sum total of their 4GB purchased if they choose any Vista edition that is 32bit.

Perhaps using red font parenthetical under the selection of 4GB instead of a footnote superscript.



*Vista Home premium is a 32bit operation system.

Ubuntu for home users

In the absence of good service under the old leadership at Dell my business is booming. Along the way I have had the opportunity to load a variety of Linux builds including the ones already listed in other posts in this forum. Without fail the build that works best with your hardware has been Ubuntu with emphasis on the KDE version called Kubuntu. My customers who have Dell computers and who made the switch from Windows to Kubuntu absolutely love it-passionately!

With that said and from this professionals point of view, if Dell were to offer D-Link wireless products and Kubuntu pre-loaded Dell would have the perfect computer for the average home and office users.

And let it be known, if ya'all don't followup on this "Idea Storm", my company will! So get it together or maybe next year you'll be at my website ordering your new computer from me! The BPC 6100! 1 Comment »

I propose to Dell to offer Ubuntu Linux with the ideal hardware to support Beryl (with XGL or AIGLX) for exceptional competition of a Linux based Eye-Candy supporting Vista alternative.

Dell should stop lying about preinstalled Linux

Linux has been an option for corporate machines for 7 years now. NOTHING HAS changed. Quit lying Dell. The requests were for pre-installed openSuSE, Ubuntu and Fedora Core on Inspirons and other retail grade machines, not bulk purchased corporate class computers. We are not idiots and we can read through the lies.

I will never purchase from Dell again. If not for anything else, because they insult their own customers' intelligence.

Novell?? OH NO!!! Test the OSS community waters!

Dell finally posted a response to the input at this site but this statement: "as a result, we are working with Novell to certify our corporate client products for Linux," is unlikely to encourage many Linux users, given Novell's recent, highly controversial, arrangement with Microsoft, seen by many as only undermining Linux/OSS by creating unnecessary doubts about users rights TO Linux.

In the following paragraph, Dell provides this: "In addition to working with Novell, we are also working with other distributors and evaluating the possibility of additional certifications across our product line. We are continuing to investigate your other Linux-related ideas, so please continue to check here for updates.", which is somewhat more hopeful, at least.

I would hope Dell would consider community concerns, while identifying the unique needs of home/home office users (which is where Linspire/Ubuntu and the Crossover Office product come in).

Good luck Dell... to us all.

If you respond well, customers will respond also to you. But I also understand you face risks in any of the directions you choose to follow. Choose well.

Not Novell Linux

Novell Linux ?!?!? Don't you get it, we want to have unincumbered Linux on the boxes, Debian, Slackware, Redhat, even Ubuntu or Linspire. Not a Microsoft product. The next thing we know the widget that we develop on our shiney Microsoft/Novell Linux box is owned by Microsoft. 6 Comments »

Pre-Install Linux / Contract Out Paid Support Options

As many others have posted, give an option for having Linux pre-installed - be it Ubuntu, openSUSE, etc. Then, Dell should sign a support deal with the respective linux distro maker (Canonical, Novell, etc.) where Dell would get a small cut of the paid support fee and the distro maker would handle all of the linux support for Dell.

#1 - Customer gets more control over what goes on their computer.

#2 - Customer gets most knowledgeable support they can without dealing with scripted help lines.

#3 - Dell creates a new revenue stream for themselves.

#4 - Dell doesn't have to absorb the extra support costs regarding linux and can roll out systems with linux options much faster.

#5 - The linux distros get an additional revenue stream that helps them furthur improve desktop linux for the end user.

End result... EVERYBODY WINS!!! Comment »

Become the open source OEM

I read the same question on Linux forums, all the time: What is the best brand of computer/laptop to purchase for Linux. I know that there is the n series of computers and notebooks, but it could go a step further. Accept the recent offer of free Linux driver development from the Linux Kernel Community so that DELLs "just work" with Linux. Maybe look at some ideas like LinuxBIOS and/or OpenBIOS. Become the OEM that everyone recommends. There is a growing market for Open Source friendly computers and DELL could own that market.

Silent / Quiet Computers: Sound levels in decibels

I'd like Dell to provide the sound level in decibels for each of their desktops, under max load as well as at idle.

How a manufacturer can produce an expensive computer, and then have the user acoustic experience of that computer dominated by the noise generated by a cheap fan worth just pennies, for the entire lifetime of that computer, is incomprehensible. Computers are noisy when brand new, but those cheap fans begin to rub and oscillate and make additional annoying noises, frequently within a short period of time of purchase.

Personally, the peace and quiet of my personal workspace is very important to me, it's my sanctuary from the world where I can focus and be creative. To have that experience disrupted by cheap fans is sad, especially when slightly more expensive fans and some reasonable design would solve the issue. Another reason why I consider buying an Apple.

If the cost of a better sound design and fans is significant, it could be an extra cost option.
In general, Dell provides noise data of its products in the Environmental Datasheets. Tests are conducted according to ISO standards in a NVLAP accredited acoustics facility. Click here for more details

Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware

I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!!
Drivers are available for Linux to make some but not all hardware work. We continue to work with our partners to provide for better hardware support. See more specifics from john_h.

Stripped down, fast Linux Box

Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)

OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as:
- Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections!
- Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls
- Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others
&nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM]
- PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program
- Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing
- Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player
- Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System
