Dell true mini-sized desktop

Desktops submitted by jerbl 02/17/07

I suggest that Dell design and sell a true mini-sized desktop CPU.
It would be similiar in size, weight and power to the Apple Mac Mini, but with Windows software.
Customers who buy a LCD or Plasma TV also prefer a CPU with a small footprint. 34 Comments »

Properly warn consumers about ~3GB Max useable RAM limit with Vista 32bit

Advertising and Marketing, Operating Systems submitted by benjesuit 06/18/07

Only Vista 64 bit can use 4GB of ram or higher. Vista 32bit (such as the recommended Home premium), like XP (32bit) will only report a max of ~3.1GB.

Therefore, it behoves Dell to properly warn consumers at time of configuration that they will not be using the sum total of their 4GB purchased if they choose any Vista edition that is 32bit.

Perhaps using red font parenthetical under the selection of 4GB instead of a footnote superscript.

*Vista Home premium is a 32bit operation system.

No Extra Software Option

Software submitted by ootleman 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Would love the ability to have a clean Vista install. No AOL software, no earthlink software, no google software - just a clean, original OS.

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/17/07

Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)

OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as:
- Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections!
- Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls
- Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others
&nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM]
- PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program
- Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing
- Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player
- Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System

Pre-installed quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. Cast your vote for Linux and other free software. Cast your vote for the Universal Education PC [ed: article removed/merged by dell_admin] utilizing free software.

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Stop reccommending Microsoft Windows Vista

Advertising and Marketing, Operating Systems submitted by arigali 06/19/07

Windows Vista is a problem for computers. It does not improve user experience but degrade it. Maybe after its first service pack it (or second, or third) would turn into a good operating system. But now, Vista is closer to Windows Millenium than XP in terms of stability and user experience. Dell is compromising its name by promoting and reccommending that OS.

Microsoft Windows XP should be the default for new computers and Linux standing as optional, at the same level as Vista, worldwide (not just in U.S.). 18 Comments »

Make a website for disgruntled Dell customers

Dell Community, Service and Support submitted by somdeb 06/19/07

Think about it... there are literally thousands of disgruntled Dell customers out there (counting myself). A huge majority of them do not have an outlet to express just how bad an experience it was to deal with Dell customer support, tech support, sales etc. Even this Dell IdeaStorm website is really geared towards new product ideas, not towards listening to the consumer's issues with specific experiences they have had with Dell.

Dell should look at this as opportunity. Have an online forum where these disgruntled customers can express just what went wrong with their Dell experience. Granted some of these will be mad rants from many, but I am willing to bet that many of these would expose just where Dell's customer experience is going wrong. Maybe each post will need to be backed up with some form of verifiable data to ensure the complaints are legitimate.

This forum can have a voting mechanism where other users vote as to whether they think a post is a mere rant or if they feel this is a valid concern. The number of +ve or -ve votes could be used as an index by Dell to identify potential areas that need to be addressed pronto.

From the customers perspective, there will be a central place to voice their concerns. The fact that it is on a Dell website will make them feel that some of their complaints will get heard.

From Dell's perspective, if they *really* cared for the customer, this is the acid test... direct from the horse's mouth. Dell will save thousands of dollars because they wont need to hire expensive consumer survey companies and get to know the real concerns people have.

Overall, this will be a bold move by Dell... Its like telling the world that you have the balls to take criticism in your stride and fix issues. It will also show that Dell is not afraid to admit that there are (understandably) issues with their customer experiences. Making all posts publicly viewable will show that Dell is not trying to hide anything.

While you are at it, the forum could also have a section which documents how Dell has/will addressed/address some of the more recurring problems that people have.

If Dell can pull this off, this will send the right signals of a company thats honest about its business and cares that extra step for its customers.

To summarize:

1. Forum will allow unsatisfied Dell customers to post their grievances publicly on Dell managed website

2. There may be a requirement for documentation to prove their claims

3. A voting system will vote out obvious pointless rants... so even if such a post sounds harmful to Dell, the number of negative votes should tell other visitors that it is not to be taken seriously.

4. Dell should actively follow up on regularly recurring problems. There should be a section where visitors can see how these problems are being addressed.

5. The priority of fixing problems can be ascertained from the number of positive or negative votes received by the post.

6. This will eventually clean up the IdeaStorm website considerably; right now, there are too many posts which are really just specific issues faced by the consumer and not a new "idea". 5 Comments »

Undroppable Notebook Computers

New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by reg 06/20/07

Dell should work with some Physicists to develop Undroppable Notebook Computers. When you let go, they fall toward the Earth, but are stopped from hitting the floor. Every person who thinks of the powers of magnets and gravity realizes that Humans have a poor understanding of some of the most basic forces in the Universe.

Dell can work on perfecting the Unified Field Theory and develop products from their new discoveries. The Heim Theory by Burkhard Heim is a good starting point. But only covers half the story, explaining the existence of all known particles, but not completely how & why those particles interact in the way they do...

Dell can work out it's own Theory of Everything, and greatly improve it's market share with new inventions. 11 Comments »

Offer factory installed Liquid Cooling and Overclock as an option

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by pranavtrehun007 06/20/07

They do it on Graphic Cards, so why not Computers.

Besides, if liquid cooling is factory installed and done on mass production, it will be cheaper and more affordable.

That way, Dell PC's will be cheap and still give good performance. Thus giving the maximum bang for the buck. 2 Comments »

Dell remove all Browsers from any OS you offer.

Operating Systems, Software submitted by jorge 06/20/07

Dell no one wants bloatware as can be seen by the plethora of Ideas and votes against bloatware. One which has been left off the list previously is Browsers! Remove all browsers from any OS you offer, its removal also prevents any additional add-on from working so kills two with one un-install. While you're at it get rid of that pesky calculator! Its eating up my disk space.

A Novel Strategy - Don't Lie to Consumers

Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by jwsamuel 06/21/07

Posting bogus credit offers on your Web site to entice buyers to purchase Dell products is nothing more than lying and is the reason I will never buy a Dell product again. My wife and I bought a Dell desktop PC and were very happy with it, so when it came time to get a notebook PC, we went right to Dell. We used Dell's 0% financing offer to buy the desktop and the same offer was plastered on every page of the Web site when we ordered the notebook -- including the page with the notebook we purchased.

I was therefore surprised when I the first bill arrived and included a finance charge. When I called about the charge, I was told that the model I ordered was excluded from the offer and that I should have noticed the asterisk and followed links to find the disclaimer that told me of that fact.

I'm sorry, but to include an offer on the page for a product and then use a small disclaimer to exclude that product is misleading, at best. As a result, I will never buy a Dell product of any kind again.

So, my idea is not a novel one. It is simple.

DELL...STOP LYING TO CUSTOMERS!!

Linux for business, too

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by lonelovetenerife 06/21/07

The Inquirer says: "WHILE DELL MAY have made some moves towards Ubuntu Linux, it is refusing to allow its business customers to buy it."

It's true? Dell sell Linux for home use, but not for business? I think Dell must sell computers with Linux to anybody, whatever the use they do....

Keep an up-to-date page on the evolving terms in various Windows licenses.

Dell Web Site, Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 06/21/07

Yet another article trying to help people understand the various
licenses (and the evolution of those licenses) in the OS's Dell sells:

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070620-microsofts-ditches-about-face-o...

Since the launch of Windows Vista, only Business and Ultimate editions have been legally approved for virtualization, thanks to the Vista EULA. A change in the EULA was forthcoming, [...]
the company relented on its transfer limitations in its retail license
[...]
The good news from all of this is that Microsoft does appear to be listening, and the company came really close to changing its mind.

I can't keep up with these license restrictions, and reading EULAs is practically a hobby of mine.

Dell has it's customers paying for these licenses without ever explaining them to customers or (as far as I can tell) even letting customers see the licenses before buying them.

When and if Microsoft does make these EULA changes, it'd be nice if there's a well-known place on the Dell website where customers can see the difference, and see that their Vista Premium has better or worse terms than someone else's Vista Premium that may have been bought earlier.

Also interesting is that Microsoft calls the restriction against Virtualization on Vista Premium a security feature -- which apparently Vista Ultimate is lacking --- so Dell might want to point out to their customers that apparently Microsoft sees Ultimate as being less secure than Premium (if I read the linked article right). 2 Comments »

virtual exercise environment

Gaming submitted by blmyers 06/21/07

A virtual reality helmet that enabled users to walk through a real or imagined environment would make exercise much more fun, especially for women who must exercise indoors more than men. If the "game" responded to speed of walking on a treadmill, for example, or used a floor mat to track foot steps, the user could be doing anything from walking on the moon to whacking moles-- or unfavorite people! Personally, I would love to run among the stars and planets-- and maybe dodge meteors and asteroids. One could even dodge alien attackers. With sedentary-linked diseases on the rise, Dell could probably get grant funding for the development.
Go for it! 3 Comments »

Create a 13.3" Ultraportable (Perfect) Latitude Notebook

Latitude products, Monitors and Displays submitted by mcfazeli 06/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Latitude notebooks are arguably the best you make, packing a lot of processing power while being a discrete business machine that is rugged and has a tough chasis that can withstand lots of travel.

However, your current D420 (D430 soon?) and D630 offerings are either too small or too big in terms of screen size. A high resolution 13.3" is the ideal screen size for the mobile power user. A 1440 x 900 resolution on the 13.3" with LED backlighting would be PERFECT. It would be more efficient than the 14.1" counterpart, but have more desktop real-estate for actually doing great work on the go (office work, photo editing, programming, browsing, watching videos, etc.)

The other specs for this KILLER ultraportable should be near identical to the D630 (not the D420) with a 1.3 mpixel cam thrown into the top of the screen. Naturally, 802.11n, SSD (32 GB, 64 GB) or HHDD (80 GB, 100 GB), are musts, and the battery life must be as good as the D630 as well. No preloaded software + Vista OR Ubuntu would be nice additions.

I'd assume such a notebook, fully loaded would weigh in at around 3.8 lbs with 6 hours of battery life and has the potential to be the #1 seller amongst mobile business professionals who don't want to carry around the bigger 4.5 lbs D630.

The m1330 has potential, but lacks the rugged business oriented chassis. But with the technology already in place, it shouldn't be hard to actually build the above notebook.

This is my DREAM notebook, and the first manufacturer that comes as close to it as possible gets 3 automatic sales from me. I hope it's Dell.
