Always include all software and driver reinstallation discs for free (or at least let us get the option to)... don't make us pay extra

Software submitted by winoffice 05/01/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Always include ALL software AND driver reinstallation discs for FREE (or at let us get the option do get the for free if we want as follows)...don't make us pay extra in case that we have a disaster and need to reinstall from scratch...!

No Discs Included (Included In Price)

All Discs Included (this means everything -- all software discs -- OS/Security software/etc., and all driver discs -- this means Windows or Linux drivers or both, whatever applies -- add $0)

Other options (OS disc only, all software discs only, driver discs only, etc. -- add $0)

For some computers, Dell does not include the reinstallation discs. Even if Dell offers them, Dell charges extra for us to get them. In fact, the only time I seen reinstallation discs being offered without charge were for Dell XPS desktops with the flashy lights -- that is, the Dell XPS 600, 700, and 710 systems, for those ware the only systems to offer operating system options like "Microsoft Windows XP Media Center WITH REINSTALLATION CD".

Also, most of the time when software reinstallation discs are not included, driver reinstallation discs (such as XPS flashy lights, as well as printers and monitors) are not included either. Therefore, don't just include the software reinstallation discs -- include as well the Windows/Linux drivers for the hardware (depending on the OS purchased with the computer, if any, which in turn depends on the user's preferences).

Besides, Microsoft as well as ALL software companies include the discs when you get the software seperately, so why can't Dell do the same when the software is preinstalled...?
Customers no longer have to pay extra for re-installation media.

6 major issues to be fixed by Dell

Dell, Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by jervis961 02/17/07

Dell became a top company by providing choice and customer service to a customer that wasn't available at the time but has since fallen behind the pack in these areas. Needing a translator when calling customer support is unnacceptable and other companies are rapidly passing Dell in technology advancements. While this site is a good start, many things need to be changed for Dell to become the market leader again.

1. Customer support needs to be in well spoken English and with employees who are allowed to do more than just read from a script. If they are speaking with a computer savvy customer the rep should be allowed to deviate from the script as long as they don't go outside the relm of normal policy.

2. Better options: Other companies offer high end components in small computers but Dell only supplies intel video processors in its 14" laptop. Dell needs to allow customers to get the size computer they need but with options from low cost through the high end so they can get a computer that is "Purely you".

3. Less forced options: I hate that I am paying for and XPS with internet security when I don't need it because I already have a subsciption that will transfer over or AOL is installed when I know I don't need it. They need to add an option of none of the above to all the added software sections.

4. Better pricing: Why is it over $200 to upgrade from 1 GB of 533 MHZ ram to 2 GB of 677 MHZ RAM? I can go to Crucial.com and get the 2GB 677MHZ kit for under $200. Upgrading with Dell after you own is even worse at over $300 this is crazy.

5. Custom Dell website: Customers want to feel special why not make a MYDELL website that when you log in you get a site designed the way you want it. If you aren't interested in the small business site it gets removed, you don't like to go thru the accessories sections when customizing a system so you don't see that section. Click on customer support and a list of your computer pops up asking which one you need help with and only shows the options for that system.

6. Customer loyalty rewards: I have bought 6 Dell systems over the last few years, why can't I get better customer service or pricing due to my loyalty to the company? 72 Comments »

15.4 size XPS system

XPS products, Laptops submitted by lilredfoxie 02/16/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

I think theyre needs to be another 15.4" size XPS system, currently the XPS lineup has no middle ground, theres either the m1210 which is too small, or the m1710 which is too large ( I dont count the m2010, since its not really a laptop, its more of its own hybrid desktop/laptop comptuer thing) use the e1505 chassis, give it the cool XPS lights, and a D-dock connectior below
Check out the Idea in Action post for details about our new 15in system.

underpowered / misconfigured graphic cards

Gaming submitted by kjano 07/27/07

dear dell team, i am really a big fan of your desktops and notebooks but there is one thing that drives me crazy! dell sells excellent and reliable hardware - no question. but since month a good 15,4" notebook with strong graphic card is missing. the problem is not just the missing power for games, but also for GIS and CAD applications. i was so happy to see the new Inspiron 1520 notebook using the 8600M GT card, but then it turns out, that it is based on DDR2 memory. sorry, but this is crazy. if you look at reviews of MacBook PRO, ASUS G1S and many more all running their 8600M GTs with GDDR3 (as proposed by Nvidea) and than compare it to a notebook (such as the new Acer 5920G) using the same card but with DDR2 the difference is about 20%. Selling a notebook such as the Inspiron 1520 with DDR2 memory for the graphic card is really a misconfiguration.

The situation is even worse for the new Precision M4300. the website says that it is made for CAD etc, but the FX 360M is the smallest nvidea card for professionals, it has just a 64-Bit-interface. thats really too slow.

I would be very happy to see well powered graphic cards in dell notebooks, not just only for 17" - nobody like to carry them around. there are so many manufacturers that are able to deliver such notebooks, why not dell? 8 Comments »

DVI ports on notebooks and tablets

Laptops submitted by sjss 02/21/07

With modern monitors and equipment shifting more and more towards DVI connections, and the fact that a DVI to VGA convertor is trivially obtained, but there are no VGA to DVI convertors easily obtainable, it makes sense to move notebooks to DVI. Those with VGA monitors can still easily connect them to their monitors, and those with DVI monitors will be able to use their monitors as well. 5 Comments »

Preloaded corporate image

Servers and Storage, Small Business, Simplify IT submitted by jmuzic1 02/19/07

When I worked as a lowly help desk lackey, I always dreaded the usual provisioning of a new computer for an employee. I always thought it would be a great idea if Dell would allow customers (mostly corporate customers in this case) upload a system image to the Dell website which would be used in provisioning new systems under specific buying accounts. Instead of loading the hard drive full of stuff that will just be erased by the company, allow Dell to provision the hard drive with a customer-supplied base image that would allow a computer to immediately be placed on a new employee's desk after being unwrapped. 3 Comments »

Laptop design - use different materials

Environment, Laptops submitted by badblood 05/28/07

Dell laptop designs are fine, functional and they are OK to look at. They are not Macs in design terms but who really gives a crap.

It might be nice though to use different materials, such as ceramic compounds, brushed aluminum, rubbers-edges, and as reg offered ages ago bamboo. 3 Comments »

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Up to date video drivers: ATI requires Dell's permission...

Gaming, Monitors and Displays, Service and Support submitted by zorgkang 05/08/07

Dell doesn't bother "forwarding" to us video card driver updates released by ATI. There is an easy solution though and all that Dell has to do is say "ok" to ATI. Please read on.

When trying to update directly from ATI, I am told that I can't update my system and I should ask my laptop manufacturer. Frustrated with this, I search for another way to update my drivers and find much information on

http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool/< found out that ATI is not to blame, but Dell is. ATI comments: "We are working diligently on attracting tier1 OEMs to participate in the mobile catalyst program. Once that happens, we will update the validation tool to allow the mobile catalyst drivers to install on those platforms."

So this thread is to strongly insist that Dell join the mobile catalyst program immediately! Please let Dell know we are not satisfied with the video card driver support they provide! 6 Comments »

Add E-SATA Ports to notebooks

E-SATA provides a way to add fast external storage with much better performance than USB or Firewire. Adding an E-SATA port would greatly improve the expandabiliy of Dell's notebook computers. 30 Comments »

Apple MacBook Pro 17

Inspiron products, Sales Strategies, Vostro products submitted by tinkertoy 09/04/07

Check out the new

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2176549,00.asp

This is the reference standard that the high end Vostro/Inspiron should be compared with. The review actually makes frequent references to the Dell lines. The performace differences quoted are actually pretty minimal especially comapred to the price difference. If you simply enabled raid in your dual drive configurations (the chipset has built in support for it!) this would go a long ways towards evening out the benchmarks. If the benchmarks were even (or even better with raid support) then the pricing would make Dell's a no brainer decision. 1 Comment »

memory

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by camf1217 12/09/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

add an option for intel turbo memory

Look for Intel® Turbo Memory, an optional component of Intel® Centrino® Duo and Intel® Centrino® Pro processor technology:

* Look for Vista*-based notebooks with new Intel Turbo Memory for up to 2X faster performance when loading frequently used, memory-intensive applications¹
* Notebooks with new Intel Turbo Memory and Windows Vista* enable faster boot time²

Intel Turbo Memory lets your notebook actually learn your habits to provide better system response. That's because it stores frequently used information near the processor, where it's more quickly available. Better CPUs run better with Intel Turbo Memory.
This entirely new system innovation for Windows Vista PCs is based on Performance Intel® NAND Flash Memory (like the memory in an iPod* or USB 'thumb' drive), together with supporting software. It works alongside your system's RAM to increase the efficiency of data movement between the processor and hard disk.

A wide spectrum of benefits
Notebooks based on Intel Centrino Duo and Intel Centrino Pro processor technology that incorporate Intel Turbo Memory gain substantial benefits:

* Reduce boot time. Faster access to boot-up files lets the system start up more quickly.
* Improve application responsiveness. Data coming from Intel Turbo memory instead of the hard drive increases access speed.
* Accelerate application loading. Fast access by the processor to information needed to launch applications cuts lag time.
* Enhance Windows Vista. Support for Windows Vista performance features like ReadyBoost*, ReadyDrive*, and SuperFetch* helps you take better advantage of the operating system.
* Save energy. Pre-storing information reduces hard-disk spin time, which saves power.

Intel turbo memory is available on several systems, including the XPS M1330 notebook.

Vostro - Need better VGA / External Monitor connection

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Vostro products submitted by lassen 08/07/07

Vostro 1400 needs a better way to connect external monitors. The current VGA port, which lacks screw-in connectors, wobbles and falls out too easily. Enlarging the case opening may allow the connectors to make secure contact (the receptors appear to be back there, but blocked by the casing).
An even better solution would be to provide a DVI digital port! Comment »

Vostro Notebooks Need digital video output instead of vga

Monitors and Displays, Vostro products submitted by ward733 07/29/07

Looking at the vga adapter on the vostro notebooks almost brings us back to late p3's and early p4's befor digital monitors. I think if the white digital connecter was there instead of the blue vga there would be a greater intrest for people that use dual video and digital projectors. I do think the new line of systems do have a good design. I think they would be a better use for the digital connection than vga... Comment »

Fix the nVidia 8600M/8400M GS driver so it will install on retail versions of Vista.

Dell Web Site, Operating Systems, Vostro products submitted by kalstolyn 08/25/07

I recently installed a retail copy of Vista Ultimate on my brand new Vostro 1500 (it came with Home Basic preinstalled, because who wants to pay for an OS we already own!) and I ran into a few issues.

1. I had to set the BIOS to its defaults before doing the installation because retail copies of Vista don't include the drivers to handle the SATA settings originally used... had to switch my SATA operation to ATA. Otherwise the system bluescreens before it even loads the GUI. That's fine, it was a simple fix/workaround.

2. Once Vista is installed, the Synaptics touchpad driver installer crashes and refuses to install. No biggie, the touchpad still works, but the scrollie thingies don't.

3. The video driver installation fails. Using the installer from the Resource CD, from support.dell.com, using the device manager... it fails. And the 8-series driver from the nVidia website claims that the video card is unsupported by that driver.

I've tried slipstreaming the appropriate things into the installation, I've tried talking nicely to it, I've tried everything under the sun. After undoing the preset tweaks in the bios (it disables some flash thing and changes the SATA settings from AHCI to ATA, I can live with that) the OS will install but seriously, who wants to operate without graphics drivers?

I'm assuming that the OEM version of Vista has something slipstreamed that makes the driver work. PLEASE add that to the driver version available for download from support.dell.com! 21 Comments »

Fix issue regarding OS installation vs. SATA Hard Drive

Servers and Storage, Vostro products submitted by rpricket 09/02/07

The suggestion is that Dell must update the bios/firmware for its Vostro computers to give better support of the SATA drives. This – or otherwise create a means by which to install the operating system of choice, without a prob.

Why is this needed? - In short, without proper SATA matrix drivers installed, the user may (as I have) encounter severe problems when trying to install a fresh copy of the operating system of choice. These problems may include anything from locking up during installation, or even the Blue Screen of Death. The sad part is, that in my experience, there is no option to load these matrix drivers during XP install – meaning, one cannot install XP.
The root cause? – its hard to say, but obviously there is a hardware conflict if drivers are needed just to properly install an OS.

My Experience:
I ordered my dell Vostro 1700 late July of 07, and received it the first week of August – well ahead of the expected delivery date. Having spent about $1,700 on my setup, I was very excited to open the box and start enjoying my new laptop. (Tech specs listed below) In the first hour of use, I encountered my first problem - a popping in the sound playback. Wonderful. Simply Wonderful. (I will address this issue in a separate proposal) After some searching I found this issue addressed on the dell forums, with no real solution. Thinking it couldn’t get much worse, I went on.

Problem number two – the case of the failing video drivers. Specifically while gaming, my NVidia GeForce 8600 GT drivers would suddenly stop working for about 15 seconds – this would happen again, and again, reoccurring every hour or two. I have yet to find the solution. My Vostro is slowly losing its appeal, but I remain faithful… (Will also be fully addressed in a separate proposal)

Here’s where the fun begins: (…sometime later)
After running into some problems that were seemingly unfixable with a program I was running, I decided to reformat my hard drive and do a fresh install of Windows Vista Home Basic. – Something I do regularly to keep my computers running smoothly. Upon opening the box however, I found that the Vista install DVD was not included. How dare they! - after talking to a tech for 15 minutes I get them to ship me a copy of the DVD.

THE REAL PROBLEM-
2 days later, the DVD arrives and I’m all set to reinstall. I pop in the DVD, boot from CD/DVD drive, and off I go. I click through the installation jargon, format the drive, and hit next. Windows starts installing… the first step completes… then the next… and the next – Last step! (the computer reboots here) the last step is listed as “Completing Installation…” and the yellow progress bar at the bottom of the screen is maybe 2/3 full. This is where everything breaks loose – I wait…and wait... and wait… and wait (4-6 hours). (still displaying “Completing Installation…” I reboot and try the process again.

Guess what. It did the same thing again…and again… and again. I tried installing Vista in the exact same manner 6 times! I don’t get it, is my DVD bad? Is my hardware bad?? I log on to dells tech support chat.
During the 2 hour chat, I did everything from run a system diagnostics, to try installing again – and all I got was a “…this is a very special issue.” to “…why don’t we just send you another hard drive, pre-flashed with vista.” - a temporary fix.

Feeling discontent with Dells tech support, I continued to search Google for information on this issue, and maybe find people with similar problems. I did. If you follow this link here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=149762 you will see what I found – a lot of people with the same problem with Vostro notebooks, or notebooks of a similar build.

The two existing solutions are as follows:

1. Disable the AHCI for your SATA Drive in the BIOS.
- Doing this will allow you to install without a prob. BUT, disabling your AHCI will cripple your drive capabilities and reduce speed. – so this is definitely not a good fix.

2. Load the SATA drive Matrix drivers before selecting the partition during vista installation.
- Doing this will allow an install – but in my experience, only Vista. The version of XP I have (dell XP cd), because there is no driver prompt, begins to load its components but after a few minutes it ends at the BSoD. Other OS’s may have very similar problems.
- Heres the link to those Matrix drivers btw:
- 32bit: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&relea...
- 64bit: http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&re...

So you tell me - should we have to put up with this, or should Dell actually do something about it? I’m not sure if this problem could be solved with a BIOS update, but if it can be, then do it…NOW!! If it can’t, then Dell needs to recall all the Vostro computers experiencing this problem and replace the conflicting hardware. – It’s hard to say if the SATA drive is actually the core cause; it may be the video card, the memory, the mother board, or any number of other components.

Lastly, I find it extremely disheartening that Dells own techs didn’t realize this problem existed, maybe because not many end users have had to reformat yet, much less know how.

Further input or recognition of this problem by other users would be much appreciated. 1

Thank You!
