Magnetic power plug to laptop

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by labtroll 03/13/07

Apple uses it.
My old Water boiler uses it (even before apple had it).
Be the first OEM PC Laptop to use this innovation.

Does away with risk of breaking plug on motherboard. Won't drag you laptop to floor if you trip over wire. 4 Comments »

Set up an independent business unit for GNU/Linux systems

Dell, Linux submitted by glynmoody 03/02/07

Clearly, there is a huge pent-up demand for pre-installed GNU/Linux systems from Dell. But equally clearly, it would be difficult for Dell to make, sell and support such systems with its current business model.

Why doesn't Dell adopt the solution outlined by Harvard professor Clayton Christensen in his book The Innovator's Dilemma? That is, to set up a completely autonomous division, dedicated solely to meeting the demand for such systems - one that is not obliged to follow any of Dell's traditional practices.

Unconstrained by Dell's current methods or cost structures, it will be able to explore, devise and adopt innovative solutions to serve this very different market profitably. Dell makes money, people get their pre-installed systems. 44 Comments »

Dell caps, t-shirts and other gear

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies submitted by santaclause 02/27/07

First, let me start by saying that I've never used a Dell machine that was the inferior of the competition's machine. I've always been at least reasonably happy with the Dell's I've had the opportunity to use.

So there's no hardware or configuration stuff that really bites. Software is easy to install & un-install, and I do this constantly. Standard style hardware was always welcome.

I'm probably more interested in showing the world that I love my Dell(s) and would really like to see all Dell's come with some sort of paraphernalia. Caps, t-shirts, mugs (big winner here), pens (decent pens), markers, socks and stickers. After all, nothing captures the corporate market like freebies for the staff :-) Perhaps even some nice international junkets for the techos in the torn shirts?

Slogan suggestions for the gear ... "Me & My Dell", "Mmm Dell is good", "OMG ... I'm going straight to Dell!", "Me and Dell both deliver", "As hot as Dell", "From sun to ocean to Dell", "I got an enormous disk, you? ...Dell", "Heelow, mee ay hilp uuu? ...Dell", "I've employed 3 support staff for 3 years, well, not directly ...Dell".

Honestly, there's real value in being able to get a new computer (particularly at work) and have something to hang onto to remind you of how satisfying the experience has been. The memory of other suppliers lingers like a plague, and I'd like to be regularly reminded of my good sense (to make the change) so I don't make the same mistake again.

Thanks very much. Comment »

Laptops with Killer NIC

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Gaming, Laptops submitted by shienarier 02/27/07

Dell should produce (very) high end gaming laptops with Killer NIC's http://www.killernic.com/KillerNic/. And yes, i know as of now there isn't a laptop version, but i'm sure interest from Dell could change that. Comment »

Trickin' Out Your Dell

Dell Community, Dell Web Site, Desktops and Laptops submitted by john_saddington 02/17/07

Dell should provide ways to "trick out" your dell, or provide support for those who are interested.

For example, say a consumer of your XPS Desktop line wants to add cool looking LED lighting systems inside and outside of their box. Providing "support" for that (either using social media, like forums where other customers could help each other, or "official" support) would be nice.

Also, possibly providing places on a gaming system that allow "expandability" beyond just the usual memory upgrade... like addition of a cool attachment for headsets... microphones, mice, keyboard, whatever... or, creating "aftermarket" parts, like changing out the chassis or something. Just like a car! 16 Comments »

Bring Back 4:3 Business Laptops

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by schizzo 02/26/07

Get back to basics -- bring back a leading edge 4:3 laptop for business users. My employees do not sit around watching movies all day. They hate the widescreen format. Dell's last remaining 4:3 (D520) is too large and too heavy for truly mobile users.

I don't understand the lack of choice, here. Why does every single other model of laptop need a widescreen format? 3 Comments »

Give Dell employees better discounts so they can experience the customer experience

Dell submitted by pwalker 02/02/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Dell employees tell me they don't get discounts on Dell products. It's time to give Dell employees good discounts so they will more frequently experience your customer experience. This is important. I believe motivating them to be Dell customers more frequently will generate a lot of ideas for improving dell.com, products and services.

We did update our Employee Purchase Program in November.

Bring support back.........

Service and Support submitted by onthemovefit 02/17/07

Dell used to have the best support, so good you advertised being the consumers choice. Now, at least for home based support, Dell's support is terrible. Business support still seems to do a good job. It's time for Dell to get back to basics.

As an Software Developer for 15yrs I always used Dell's products. First Dell computer was a Pentium II Workstation. I also would recommend Dell products to anyone who would listen. This has now stopped. The last person I recommended to Dell had such terrible support (from india) I doubt they'd ever buy a Dell again. I've even considered looking elsewhere for my next laptop and PC. Comment »

No proprietary parts

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by neogamerdrew 02/19/07

When maintaining or upgrading a Dell, it is a shear nightmare to try and replace parts. Most things are not the standard ATX parts you would expect. I suggest that Dell move away from proprietary parts, and open the door for people to use after market parts. 28 Comments »

Ditch the Home/Small Business/Enterprise trichotomy

Sales Strategies, Small Business, Laptops submitted by majid 02/17/07

What products I am interested in do not correlate with myself or my company size. It used to be that high-end thin-and-light laptops would not be available in the Home segment, only the Enterprise segment. I'm sorry, just because I am a small-business owner or a home user does not mean I am ready to settle for inferior options deemed "good enough" by the powers that be.

This whole notion of three segments is a relic of a company-centric rather than customer centric marketing culture. 9 Comments »

End PC Payola | Pioneer a PC Builder Code of Conduct

Service and Support, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/20/07

Dell's image was damaged by the $1bn Intel kickback scandal. Many in the computer industry believe that Microsoft's grip on Dell and other PC Builders is airtight due to secret deals and marketing kickbaks. Consumers appreciate lower prices on new Dell PCs thanks in part to bundled 3rd party software, however we are not permitted to choose the software that is pre-installed, and kickback deals are not transparent.

In the music recording and radio broadcasting industries, similar shady practices are called payola. Please, end PC payola, and give control back to your customers.

We encourage Dell to pioneer a voluntary PC Builder Code of Conduct, and regain the public trust.

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise payola circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Transparency at Dell is necessary for true consumer choice. For example, transparency can be improved by providing the choice of pre-installing quality free and open source software (developed with near 100% transparency). Cast your vote to have the OPTION of buying a new Dell PC pre-installed with Linux and other free software like OpenOffice.org. 82 Comments »

Product enhancement for Dell power adapter

Laptop Power submitted by gbrugman 02/21/07

For your information: daily winding and unwinding the notebook connecting cord, will eventually cause the cable shield and isolation to tear down, just outside the housing. It happened to many Dell notebook cords at work, causing the power flow to stop or, even worse, to short-circuit.

The cord at the other end of the AC wall mount doesn't have this problem because this cord already points at the right angle. So as to avoid said problem in the future, both cords should leave the housing in the proper winding-angle: problem solved.

I hope to have been of help, because I think it's a shame that a minor cord problem makes it this risky to work with an otherwise good product. It seems easy enough to remedy. :-) 39 Comments »

Student Discounts!

Education, Sales Strategies submitted by cnmopt 02/18/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Similar to Apple, Dell should offer students a special discount on Dell Products. The Apple market share is currently growing in the education sector and offering [college] students a discount would be useful to counter Apple's strategy. 42 Comments »

Should Apple licence OS X to Dell? | Bigmouth Strikes Again - Freelance journalist Gary Marshall on technology, the Internet, music, Macs and more

Operating Systems submitted by pwalker 01/30/07

There was an interesting op-ed by Doug Mohney in The Inquirer yesterday, which suggested that the launch of Vista provides a good opportunity for Apple - if it licences OS X to Dell.

However, Vista is being beaten like a dead horse by the mass media – most of them already are enthralled to the God of Jobs if you read between the lines, so Microsoft could make nuclear fusion work tomorrow and they’d give it a lukewarm review at best. The consensus view out of the babbling punditry is “Don’t buy Vista today, unless you have to buy a new computer tomorrow.”

On that front, I think the babbling pundits are right. Heh.

So what about Apple?

If Apple was serious, and I mean really serious, about gaining more PC market share, they’d realize they need to license/sell their operating system to another hardware manufacturer or two. Sure, Apple’s tried the license route before with mixed results, but it’s about time to bite the bullet, look into the mirror, and realize they should try something bold.

Apple should license their operating system to Dell.

Mohney isn’t suggesting that Apple should make OS X available to any PC user; the dangers of that (such as hardware incompatibilities or really crap machines ruining Apple’s reputation) have been talked to death for years. Rather, he’s suggesting that Apple could team up with a single PC manufacturing firm to make decent clones, expanding OS X’s market share without diluting the core Apple brand. It wouldn’t be an Apple Mac: it’d be a Dell Mac. Dell’s good at churning out PCs, so if Apple laid down strict criteria about what should and shouldn’t go into a clone you could get decent non-Apple Macs competing in different markets to Apple Macs. Does anyone really think Dell is capable of making something as sexy as a MacBook or as iconic as the iMac?

I’m sure Mohney will be inundated with angry emails, but I do wonder how many of the senders will have reacted similarly to suggestions a few years back that Macs should run Intel chips. I think his idea’s fascinating. 48 Comments »
