Stop selling PC Mover to new Vista Owners Service and Support submitted by fgilley 04/16/07 I have seen too many issues with this software causing upset customers and bad customer experience. Customers call in to technical support mad because it did not move over software that wasnt even compatible with Vista in the first place (example, Quickbooks 2006 or below). A lot of times, the PC-Mover will move over old problems to the new computer. Anything that uses the registry in such a way seems to be troulbe from the start, and i dont think sales should be forcing it onto people so much as a software that they should spend an extra 50 dollars to buy! 1 Comment » GPS and BlueTooth enable on laptop Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by alle 04/16/07
I am not sure if some already posted this, but i think my idea may add some value. Dell Factory Build: Problems (Optiplex) Service and Support, OptiPlex products submitted by tleavit 04/16/07
4 out of the last 8 Optiplex we have purchased have serious problems with the factory build of XP. We blow it out and soon after the thing hangs after XP loads past the logo screen (right before ctrl-alt-delete pops up). Example: We received 2 745 Opliplex on Friday (core 2 duo 2.1 ghz). Blew both out. One of them failed in the exact same way that the other 4 Optiplex in the last month or so have failed. We have troubleshot the things for hours in the past with no luck. The only solution is to slap the CD back on it and rebuild again. I said something to our rep and got the old "call support". We are already waiting an extra 2 hours on the box's and don't have that kind of time to deal with help desk guys that by and large do not have the technical skills to tell us anything more than "rebuild it". My network admin staff think its a conspiracy to get Dell to sell us their own custom solutions but that might be far fetched. Get 'er fixed! Linux, Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by kholz 04/16/07 I think Dell should build it's Desktops/Notebooks that are fully compatible with the Linux Kernel, Solaris Kernel and any of the *BSD Kernels. The Linux distribution should never be an issue if all the hardware is supported by the Linux Kernel, the same would go for most of the other UNIX like systems supported by the x86 and x86_64 architectures. Dell should follow Apple and Sun's lead by using open source to promote innovation. 4 Comments » Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Operating Systems submitted by parucoool 04/16/07 As PC Restore utility is shipped with Image on the HDD and it can get erased if cust formats the HDD.Dell can send the PCrestore Image in such a way that even after format it should not get erased i.e cust should not be able to erase the image. It will save the cost of shipping the Operating System disks. 6 Comments » Sales Strategies submitted by jmxz 04/16/07
HP gives me the helpful option of letting me choose not to deface my laptop with a Vista sticker. VISTA label Yes, they also give me the option of not getting Vista at all on that page (saving $75) but I think that's been pointed out in other ideas on ideastorm before. Dell: Please give us the option not to get a sticker - and, like HP, to make the systems without a Vista Basic Logo cheaper than ones with the ugly sticker. 12 Comments » Desktops and Laptops submitted by blackwolf 04/16/07 Dell, as a major computer/systems builder, should build systems that use NON-proprietary hardware. Proprietary motherboards, power supplies, and other equipment that Dell frequently has built to fill specific models of desktops, are only a problem once those desktops are out of warranty - usually within 1 or 2 years, 3 if the consumer paid extra - and are a [edited by moderator] to replace later, when the consumer is usually having issues with his/her desktop. Instead of being able to replace a proprietary piece of hardware, the user often has to either buy a new system (and usually does NOT want to do this) or has to have so many components replaced that they may as well have bought a new system. An interesting note to all this: Most base line consumers, genuinely like the computer case that came w/ their systems, but get frustrated and upset when they find out that all the parts inside it are proprietary and that replacing parts is problematic at best, and impossible at worst. Dell would garner a lot of consumer interest in its products if it quit using proprietary products. This is one reason why I always build every single system I own, with the exception of laptops. Comment » Promote the advancement and involvement of women in computer use and design Education submitted by badblood 04/16/07
In the United States, the number of women represented in engineering and information technology peaked in the late 1980s. Since then, the percentage of women in the computing profession declined from 35.2% in 1990 to 28.4% in 2000. In computer science in particular, there has been a dramatic drop in women earning bachelor's degrees. A report from the Computing Research Association indicated that the number recently fell below 20%, from nearly 40% in the mid 80s. Research has shown that many misperceptions about computing persist and may discourage women. Option of complete customization Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by kalpakrg 04/16/07
Give options for complete customization of the system. Like people can pick and choose from whatever processor to any RAM, Hard Drive, Wifi card, OS etc. Give options to people to (Virtually) assemble there machines. Also there can be options more specified on grouping the customer Service and Support submitted by ray_linn 04/17/07
As we know, the service is very important for a famous company to keep on growing up. IBM already turned into a sevice company from a computer manufacture. How about Dell? Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by brucemel 04/17/07 It would be great if you could program your computer to boot up at predetermined time. For businesses this would be great because they could manage the load in the morning. It would also be great for home use. It would be even better if when you logged off it asked you what time you wanted to boot up next because everyday might be different especially in Home and Small Business. 5 Comments » Did "Microsoft kill Dell Linux" as the media reported in 2002 Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by jmxz 04/17/07
The "idea" in this one is for Dell to explain both the history and the present lack of action. "Published Tuesday 19th March 2002 10:35 GMT.Microsoft used to bully IBM in a similar way: http://www.theregister.co.uk/1999/06/10/cut_a_deal_or_you/ "From about 20 July, IBM found it was completely cut off from access to Windows 95 code, and could not continue with development of models incorporating Windows 95Though IBM didn't take well to being bullied and worked to make Linux a viable alternative in case they were threatened again. It makes you wonder if Microsoft did it to Dell again this time. Back in February Dell said " It’s exciting to see the IdeaStorm community’s interest in open source solutions like Linux and OpenOffice. " By March there was a lot of talk but little action save for talk of certifications on a few business machines (latitudes). In April - a deafening silence. All the while, though, Dell's been selling Linux Inspirons in China ( http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/65270 ) - so it's not technical problems holding them back. Even if the sell the exact same china model here it would be a big step forward - I don't doubt the community could quickly post ways to set the language preferences to English. Something's holding Dell back - what could it be? So it's a two part IdeaStorm idea:
