Lightscribe for Dell PCs

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas submitted by josmar52789 05/04/07

Dell computers need to have Lightscribe functionality in their CD/DVD burners. It's a great technology, but I haven't found it on a Dell PC... 7 Comments »

Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware

Linux submitted by gergnz 02/19/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!!
Drivers are available for Linux to make some but not all hardware work. We continue to work with our partners to provide for better hardware support. See more specifics from john_h.

How to Save $52 Billion -Jeff Muchnik - Dell Enthusiast

Dell submitted by jmm1966 02/17/07

Dell
Attn: Michael Dell - Chairman & CEO

I was reading the Austin Statesman. I read that Dell made $56 Billion in Sales in 2006 but only $4 Billion in Profit. Based on my Accounting background, this equals expenses of $52 Billion. This is a large total, which I believe, can be reduced drastically.

I know that by combining my leadership and your support, I could add value to Dell by creating effective methods to eliminate a sizeable portion of the $52 Billion in Expenses and ALSO create additional forms and streams of Revenue.

I would achieve both these reductions in Expenses and increases in Revenue by different methods. I would create the top performing team environment in the World. I would motivate every Manager and every Employee to think Dell first and Themselves second. I would create a work environment based on competitive, motivation, towards cost reductions, process improvements, revenue increases, and elimination of bureaucratic and work duplications.

These changes would be drastic. Dell would become a learning Corporation that evolves into the global leader that Dell once was. The work environment will be one of inspired leadership, motivation, excitement, competition, team work, learning, breaking processes and business process improvements as well as business process eliminations.

Peronally, I follow Business on a global scale, based on my thorough enjoyment of the Capitalist system. I also follow the Computer Industry due to my living in the Austin, Texas area. Being the home of 1 Major Fortune Company, creates an important understanding of what Dell does for Austin. This focuses me on the success and/or relocation of Dell.

My background is comprised of educational accomplishments comprising an International MBA (Magna Cum Laude), partial completion of the CPA, and a MCP Designation. My work experience is comprised of CFO, VP, and Controller work at smaller and larger Companies. I also have Business Consulting experience analyzing, leading, and implementing new business concepts.

If you are interested in speaking with me further about my ideas or myself, please either email me directly. [removed by moderator] 7 Comments »

Sell customers the Dell PC/Laptop that they want to buy!

Service and Support, Desktops and Laptops submitted by gizmosys 03/29/07

Nine months ago, I had full intention of buying a new Dell PC and had spent more than a week on the configurators, tweaking various models, but I ultimately realized that the only machine that had all the options and price point I wanted was no longer sold through the Home portal and was only sold through the Small Business side of the house. (I believe it was a Dimension 9x00 series).

When I called to place an order, I was informed that since I was not a Small Business, I would not be allowed to purchase this particular model of Dell. I was furious and I ended up building my own rather than buying through Dell.

I really hate the way that Dell seems to be trying to force the XPS line on customers. (We do own a XPS GEN4 already.) If I want to buy a Dimension 9200 or an Inspiron 6400, or even a Precision workstation, please sell me one.

I've been a fan of Dell for quite a while, have purchased many and recommended many more to friends and family, but after that experience, my appreciation has waned a bit.

ONE SHOPPING CART PLEASE (dell.com)

Dell Web Site submitted by ootleman 02/16/07

Why split it up into 4 different shopping carts (home, small business, etc)? I still don't know how it works. 1/2 my products go into one cart, 1/2 my orders go into the other, possibly depending on where I was browsing from.

And, then, seems like the shopping carts expire after a few hours. After all that time spent configuring, why not keep it around longer.

Matter of fact, why not split the site up at all? If I click on desktops - show me all desktops. Do I, as a small company, need differ computers then a medium business? Please show me everything and let me figure out what works best.

Ditch the Home/Small Business/Enterprise trichotomy

Sales Strategies, Small Business, Laptops submitted by majid 02/17/07

What products I am interested in do not correlate with myself or my company size. It used to be that high-end thin-and-light laptops would not be available in the Home segment, only the Enterprise segment. I'm sorry, just because I am a small-business owner or a home user does not mean I am ready to settle for inferior options deemed "good enough" by the powers that be.

This whole notion of three segments is a relic of a company-centric rather than customer centric marketing culture. 9 Comments »

Solarized Dell - Take 30% off price for residental or business?

Environment submitted by innovationwiz.com 05/02/07

Seems simple! Dell writes code to interface & allow any Dell PC to be able to track the sun's path, for a simple, single or multiple SOLAR PANEL ARRAY.
Example: A Dell PC would be designed to track and monitor both its own power system (with the power coming from an external solar panel ) but, also be capable of tracking the sun's path when plugged into numerous 'solar panel controllers' now marketed for home and business solar systems.

Residential and Business SOLAR TAX CREDITS now exist at least till the end of 2007 for installed solar energy systems. Up to $2000 tax credit on Solar systems for residential, unlimited amount of tax credit for Business solar expense, at 30% of costs.
Example: Buy a solar panel(s) + buy a Dell computer that newly tracks and controls the energy output and solar power management of the solar panel for light(s) and/or the power of your Dell PC in your residence.

Dell would sell more systems - users might get the big tax break on a Dell system - and the world becomes much greener.

A DELL PC MIGHT BE THE BEST SOLAR MONITORING, TRACKING, and POWER MANAGEMENT CONTROLLER IN EXISTENCE WITH THE RIGHT INTERFACE AND SOFTWARE! 4 Comments »

sell switching products on home office site

Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by james_hart 03/06/07

Why is it that if I go to the Dell Home and Home office site to buy a computer, and I want to throw in a 24 port gigabit switch, I can buy a D-Link, Linksys, or netgear switch, but NOT a DELL Switch? however, if I go to the small business site, I can buy all the Dell switches I want?

I really don't get that... i am ready to upgrade my home network to Gigabit, and I was going to do it with Dell 27xx series switches, but looks like I wont because I don't run a small business...

I could setup a small business account, but, if I want to use my Dell perferred account, I can't on the small business site... it is a shame that Dell can't sell their own products in priority or at a minumum, let people compare them on the home and home office site. Comment »

Don't make us choose between business and consumer

Dell Web Site submitted by prognatus 05/02/07

Browsing PCs on dell.com could be much easier. Why differentiate between private consumers and businesses? Today a customer have to first choose between Home & Home Office, Small Business, Medium and Large Business, Government and Education.

Why can't ordinary consumers buy servers or Latitude notebooks? Yes, I know we can, but then we have to browse several pages to another section of the web site. This is not very user friendly!

Instead, why not tag the different products with a color recommendation - GREEN for home users, BLUE for businesses, BLACK for gamers & enthusiasts, RED for government & Education, etc. - but list them at the same page! Let us browse all desktops in one operation, all notebooks together, and so on. 5 Comments »

Linux for Home Users

Linux submitted by bridger987 03/06/07

I am very impressed by Dell's willingness to give open source a try, but have only seen business options such as Novell and Red Hat. It would be nice to see a home-user option.

An amazingly large number of people buy computers for very simple tasks such as checking email, browsing the web for information, and typing simple documents. None of these people want to pay up to US$400 for an operating system plus tons of pre-loaded trialware that they don't want or need.

For this market, I could see Ubuntu; or another simple, free operating system being perfect for what I call (not to be prejudiced) the "grandma" market. Not only is Ubuntu, Fedora, and the like simplified and easy to use, but it is not as susceptible to malware such as viruses, spyware, and adware. Noone likes adware on their computer (not even *cough* the pre-loaded kind.) A crisp, clean interface (like Ubuntu), no interferances like malware, and an overall ease-of-use could be a serious buying point for the "grandma" market.

Also, I second (or third, or fourth--you know what I mean) the idea of pre-installing programs such as Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, and OpenOffice.org software on Dell Home PCs for the same reasons.

Thanks for creating the site!

Think about it...

Choice of Operating System for the customer - new business opportunities

Operating Systems, Service and Support, Small Business submitted by balou59 02/21/07

It should be possible for private and corporate customers to choose the following:
- buy PCs with no pre-installed OS
- buy PCs optimised for Linux with fully supported hardware
- buy PCs with Linux pre-installed, ideally leaving the choice of the distribution to the customer
- buy PCs with dual-boot installation of operating systems chosen by the customer
Of course any free BSD flavor is also welcome.

There is a huge community able to give Free Software support to customers, one suggestion would be to establish localised web pages listing support offers in various countries. This could be another business opportunity for Dell: cooperation with Free Software support partners.

Of course I would love to see Dell taking measures to influence hardware component manufacturers to provide free drivers. Dell being one of the bigest reseller of hardware it should use it's market power in the interest of the customer.

This is a fabulous opportunity for Dell to become the leader of user-friendly hardware resellers. Market is drifting to new business models worldwide, especially Free Software and it's time to take the path to this very promising future now, not to be left behind as a has-been.

It also makes Dell more attractive to customers in emerging countries, especially the Far East, Latin America and Africa where people are not able or willing to spend money for obsolete software license fees. BTW, offering Free Software is the best way to prevent people from stealing proprietary software.
It also helps to spread IT knowledge all over the world, creating new customers for user-friendly hardware.

Actually I am not a Dell customer because of the lack of Free Software support amongst the actual offers. But I would love to change and recommend Dell to my customers, friends and family if the future offers are more user-friendly. 3 Comments »

Do not distinguish between home, home office, small business, and enterprise

Dell Web Site submitted by cosmotic 02/17/07

It is hard enough finding the product in the right store, let alone figuring out the differences between them. I never buy products from the home department just because the tech support is in India. 2 Comments »

Drop the distinction between home and small business

Drop the distinction between 'home & home office' and 'small business' users, at least in terms of the available models and (more importantly) prices. Comment »

Latitude laptops for Home and Home Office customers

Latitude products, Sales Strategies submitted by jpkulkarni 02/17/07

I would like to see Dell sell Latitude line of laptops to Home and Home Office customers. I think Latitude laptops look more professional and are better built than Inspirons. Home and Home Office customers should have a option to buy those laptops. 5 Comments »

Make "Business" Parts available to Home Users

Sales Strategies submitted by thetavern 03/07/07

I want 10,000 and 15,000 rpm SCSI drives but I have tgo go to 'business computers' to find them. Same thing with video cards. The 2 divisions have different parts. Why nott consolidate and make your best parts available to all? I should be able to buy any drive , video card or DVD you carry in any division. It might also allow you to streamline your operation and actually order as wider selection with fewer total types of parts on hand that you need to support for years. 2 Comments »

Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Offer the 3 top free Linux versions for free pre-installation on all Dell PCs.

Quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. For example OpenOffice.org, the Microsoft Office alternative, can shave hundreds of dollars off the price of a new PC. Cast your vote for OpenOffice and other free software.

Offer easy multi-boot options with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or NO Windows (yes, Linux can entirely replace Windows!)

Offer trade-ins and Linux CDs for older model Dell PCs. Cast your vote for the mini Linux Dell PC and the Universal Education Dell PC, both utilizing free software.

Would you try Linux if it were this easy?

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Please take a look at www.dell.com/open for linux options on the Inspiron.

Dell should branch out into video game development!!!!

Gaming, Linux submitted by goalsetter21 05/04/07

With Dell's major venture into PC gaming system development (i.e. XPS and the AlienWare purchase), in my opinion Dell should consider purchasing or starting up their own video gaming (VG) software development company.

VG development can be a very high margin business and Dell can leverage it's existing knowledge of gaming hardware performance.

Now You Choose - Concept 2

Gaming, XPS products submitted by dell_admin1 04/25/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Participate in the product design process! Dell is using IdeaStorm to decide between two new product design concepts. Vote on your favorite and weigh in to tell us what you think.

When we unveiled the XPS 710 H2C at CES this year, we also uncovered it. There were a limited number of systems sprinkled throughout the show floor that had a clear side panel allowing easy viewing of the patent-pending two-stage H2C liquid cooling system.

Since then, more than a few people have suggested we offer a “panel with a view” as an option for our XPS 710 line. Now we need you to vote for one of these two options and, most importantly, share some reasons why you like it.

This “Now You Decide” vote campaign will be open from Wednesday, April 25 to Friday, May 11. The design that gets the most votes will be featured in a future generation of XPS gaming desktops.

Check out the latest Idea in Action on the new XPS 730.

Too Many Choices & Configurations

Sales Strategies, Simplify IT submitted by briapf 02/26/07

In my opinion, buying from Dell, is like going to Starbucks. There are so many options, and all you want is a coffee! Provide a quality product, that supports a majority of the people.

Offer two types of machines - high end or low end, with the choice of operating systems, even dual boot Windows / Linux.

The machine should come standard with the features most people need large hard drive, RAM, wireless, internet, bluetooth, camera, DVD R/W.

Keep it simple, but offer quality. Right now, there are too many choices, bundled packages, rebates, etc... I believe people get lost in all of the choices, with weekly specials, constantly changing.

Offer incentives for students and small businesses. 2 Comments »
