Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057 08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.

I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

Make Linux and no Operating system standard options on all future products

Operating Systems submitted by jervis961 08/17/07 **REVIEWED**

OK Dell you have committed to supplying Linux options in limited form. Since you have laid the groundwork already here is the next step. Every new product you release that needs an Operating system should have Linux and also no Operating System as an option in the configuration along side Windows. Since you have to write drivers and test compatability for Vista when making a new product just make it compatable with Linux at the same time. There will no longer be a need for a seperate sections for Linux or no Operating system since all of the products will have the option. this will help make your site easier to navigate for you customers. You can also create an ACCURATE help me choose section for the OS choices.

Check out what daniel_j has to say on the options we offer.

Sell Ubuntu Systems to Businesses

Linux, Sales Strategies, Small Business submitted by defrex 06/20/07

Recently Dell refused to sell their Ubuntu PCs to a small non-profit business. Please do sell them in future, letting the market for the Ubuntu PCs expand however it chooses.

Explain why you made Windows cheaper than Ubuntu again for the same hardware

Linux submitted by jmxz 07/07/07

Dell, you labeled the idea "Implemented: Ubuntu Dell is $50 Less Than Windows Dell" as "Implemented"
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/66879/Implemented_Ubuntu_Dell_is_50_Les...< a couple days later you made the Windows machine $275 cheaper than the equivalent Ubuntu machines.

Quoting jsgarvin in the comments on this idea:
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/68294/Same_discounts_available_on_Ubunt...

Just did my own 1420 vs 1420N comparison. The Windows machine comes with a free upgrade to 2GB Memory and 160GB Drive, which each cost more on the Ubuntu machine. Apparently, it's harder to install memory and hard drives on Linux??? Hmmm.. no, not that I recall. Anyway, with all the same options selected between the two machines, the Ubuntu Tax apparently is now running $275.
Just wait, it' won't be long before Dell pulls all the Ubuntu machines off the shelf and claims (again) that there's no market for Linux on home machines. Gee, wiz. I wonder why that is.

Now I know Ubuntu's a better OS; but c'mon - even I wouldn't pay a $275 premium for Ubuntu over Windows.

Or are you trying to kill the Ubuntu sales - and if so, just come out and say that? 14 Comments »

Make Dell Ubuntu PCs available to businesses and non-profits

Linux, Sales Strategies, Small Business submitted by wyleyr 06/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell is apparently not yet willing to sell Ubuntu-based PCs to business users, non-profits, or other organizations larger than a "home office." See this Ubuntu forum thread for more:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=478975

If Dell is serious about offering "choice" to consumers -- the main reason that they're offering up Ubuntu -- they ought to offer it to all their customers, including commercial and non-profit organizations.

Perhaps the greatest barrier here is that these other customers often require different support contracts than home users. It wouldn't be necessary to offer the same support options to organizations that purchase Ubuntu PCs as are offered to home users, or to organizations that purchase Windows PCs. (Perhaps Dell doesn't need to offer any support at all, except for hardware; as long as Canonical can support these organizations.) But they ought to at least have the option of buying the boxes, even if they have to get support in a different way.

Same discounts available on Ubuntu and Windows

Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by jonsmirl 06/12/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I'm ordering a Vista XPS 410 right now. I wanted a Ubuntu one but I'm going to throw away yet another copy of Windows. The Vista XPS 410 has $200 off today and free ship for a total of $869. The identical Ubuntu machine is $1019 plus $29.99 shipping. So today Ubuntu costs $170 more than Windows instead of $50 less. Why can't I have the same discounts on the Ubuntu machine? 50 Comments »

More RAM!

Desktops and Laptops submitted by mwmtjm 01/30/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Do away with 512MB of memory as a base option to buy consumer desktops and notebooks. With Vista running best on 1GB at a minimum, don't make customers have a basic experience with the new OS because Dell wants to be able to advertise at a lower price point. The success of Vista -- and subsequently for Dell -- will be largely in word of mouth. Take a long-term view and build the momentum one great customer experience at a time right now!

Require Publicly available Specifications for your components

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Advertising and Marketing submitted by jd 02/19/07

With the influence you have on the component suppliers, why not require them to provide specifications for the devices to the public? Network cards, video cards, RAID controllers all should have the programming specifications available. The Linux and *BSD groups will flock to the hardware platforms that have documented programming interfaces. It will cost you nothing to implement. Intel, TI and Broadcom, are you willing to lose business? 3 Comments »

Linux para latinoamérica

Linux, Service and Support, Software submitted by digigato 02/21/07

* Linux
* Open Office
* Menos bloatware
* Opciones mas variadas de configuración (desktops / laptops y servers)
* Mejor soporte
* Menos tiempso de transito!

Desde el rio Bravo hasta la patagonia tambien habemos clientes Dell, ¿o acaso LA es un second grade market?

Gracias por leernos y tomarnos en cuenta.

Show random ideas on Ideastorm homepage

IdeaStorm submitted by pepitoe 02/19/07

Currently the top scoring ideas show on the home page of Ideastorm, meaning they get even more attention, while other good ideas get much less exposure. A random selection should be shown either instead of or as well as the top ideas. 4 Comments »

Offer the possibility to donate to Free/OSS projects

Operating Systems submitted by pov 02/21/07

Buying DELL computers without any OS would be great, and many popular ideas expressed here already show that very clearly.

As we all use free and/or open source software (ranging from Firefox, OpenOffice to Linux, etc.), it would be really nice to be able offer some of the spared money to some FOSS organization(s).

This would be *optional* and any buyer would be able to select the exact amount of money he wishes to donate.

This would be a win-win(-win) situation:
- DELL's aura would get a great boost,
- Buyers would still pay less than when buying the legacy OS,
- FOSS projects would get some extra cash at no cost to cover their running expenses

And I am not even talking about the enormous well-being resulting from such good actions :) Comment »

Stop Selling Microsoft products

Dell, Linux submitted by plbogen 02/21/07

You could reduce $100s of dollars on every machine by using a pure OSF system.

Firefox + Ubuntu + Openoffice would provide MORE abilities for customers while saving them money.

At best Microsoft products should be a paid upgrade. 1 Comment »

Linux

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by nick_inspironvista 02/21/07

Offer the choice to have Linux installed on Dell computers.

e.g:

Windows Vista Home Premium: add $50
Windows Vista Business: add $60
Ubuntu 6.10 Linux with OpenOffice: add $20
SuSE 10.2 Linux with OpenOffice: add $20
Fedora Core 6: add $20
No Operating System installed: subtract $

This is in support of Linux on Dell's. 1 Comment »

Linux and Open Office as default software on Dell

Linux, Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by ekkschu 02/22/07

I´ve been running a Dell desktop-PC (WindowsXP Pro with MS Office) for over three years, and it´s time to get a new desktop and, in addition, a notebook. Though, the hardware has been running without problems till today, I´m definitely looking now for an equipment with pre-installed Linux and Open Office resp. Star Office (has a database). The main reasons for this: Probably a much lower price, a better use of hardware resources and - I don´t like Windows with all of its hidden features like "home calling".
Over a year ago, I already asked Dell, whether there is such an offering, but didn´t get an answer. So, I understand you want me to buy elsewhere. 1 Comment »

Shipping free OSs

Operating Systems, Servers and Storage submitted by mr_road 02/20/07

Why not ship a range of Free OSs with your servers, Linux, the BSD family, BeOS. These could be shipped on the HDD as live images and if you wanted to try it just burn it and reboot your live CD. This would show many people that there are more ways than the microsoft way to use your PC. 1 Comment »

Pre-Installed Gimp Photo Manipulation Software

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by kyle.burton 02/20/07

Include a pre-installed copy of the open source Image Manipulation software: Gimp with windows based installs. In addition to open-office, a photo manipulation package like this would be a useful add on. Including picasa or other on-line image organization applications would be useful as well. 3 Comments »
