NICE New Dell montor! Keep making great designs like this.

Monitors and Displays submitted by jmxz 05/18/07

http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/18/dells-ultra-thin-concept-lcd-with-displayp...

Dell's ultra-thin LCD concept with DisplayPort going retail?
...
Remember that super swanky Dell monitor concept we went ga ga over back at January's CES? Yeah, we still find it hard to believe it's a Dell design. Well, it'll apparently be up for sale later in the year.
Beautiful - we want more great designs like this. 41 Comments »

With Ubuntu installed models, offer a "Linux starter kit" to help transition from Windows.

submitted by benjesuit 05/03/07

As an option for the Ubuntu Linux preinstalled models, offer a starter kit to help former windows users make a somewhat seamless transfer away from windows and onto Linux.

This kit should contain:

1. Codeweaver's CROSSOVER LINUX which allows Ubuntu (as well as other Linux distros) to run popular Windows software.

2. List of currently compatible software that runs with Crossover Linux.

In addition, in all online and print ads, let this option be prominently displayed along with a brief but concise explanation of Crossover Linux's capabilities.

I believe that this will make the Ubuntu Linux models more attractive to the general public and make the transistion to Linux less of a "risk." 10 Comments »

Stop overcharging for upgrades (memory, hdd, etc. )

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by uklathemock 02/17/07

Almost everyone I know buys the smallest harddrive and the lowest amount of memory for their Dell notebook, and then upgrades later. Why make your customers turn to other sources to buy memory and hard drives? I think quite a few e-tailers were created and have flourished because everyone (Dell, HP, Apple, etc.) overcharges for upgrades. 17 Comments »

Recycle & refurbish old Dell PCs back to Dell for 10% discount

Environment submitted by reg 05/18/07

Recycle your old Dell back to Dell for a 10% discount on new equipment. Dell can then secure overwrite erase the hard drive, install Ubuntu + hardware drivers, then donate the hardware to unemployment, food stamp, and welfare offices Nationwide. The social services offices then can pass out the refurbished used equipment to its clients, and Dell can be given BIG tax breaks by the State and Federal Systems.

1. Recycle - Turn it in, don't landfill it.
2. Reuse - There is still life left in that old hardware
3. Reduce - Buy new electronics less often, get 5 years use out of every PC.
4. Refuse - wasteful spending, wasteful practices & wasteful companies.
5. Refute - Once wasteful practices or procedures are identified, correct the problem with Action! 58 Comments »

Dell Include a Ubuntu CD with every purchase of a Non-Ubuntu OS System for every System you sell.

Dell, Operating Systems, Software submitted by jorge 08/14/07

Dell Include a Ubuntu CD with every purchase of a Non-Ubuntu OS System for every System you sell.

Your other non-Ubuntu OS offerings are hurting due to viruses, Trojans, e-mail bombs, worms, random system errors, un-reproducible memory handling errors, the list goes on. Offering them a second option once they experience the pain and agony is the best thing Dell can do.

Show your customers you care and provide them with a Ubuntu OS install CD (which can run in Live mode as well). 15 Comments »

coreboot (formerly known as LinuxBIOS) is a Free Software project aimed at replacing the proprietary BIOS (firmware) you can find in most of today's computers.
- Fast boot times 3 sec.
- Runs in 32-Bit protected mode almost from the start
- Can boot Windows too...

Dell should offer option to remove VISTA - Blank disk is better than with VISTA preloaded

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by makuchaku 06/20/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Dell should offer an option of removing the default OS - Vista/XP when a user is configuring his order on DELL's website.

Apart from saving a few crutial $$, this is needed when a user already has a licensed copy of the OS.

Make A Wireless Dell

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Monitors and Displays submitted by reg 08/07/07 **COMING SOON**

Apple has a real, valid point: Too many cables in a typical PC setup.

I think Dell could make a combo cable, or a unified display (display/camera/stereo speakers).

Dell should work on a nice clean design - like Apple's clean design - less cable rat nests, more computing power. 220 Comments »

BOYCOTT VISTA!

Operating Systems submitted by reg 03/21/07

Dell Dudes,

Microsoft reserves the right to spy on your computer.

The more you learn how Microsoft EULA has the right to enter your computer, check out what software you are using, and also use the DRM tools in Vista to prevent you from seeing files, data, videos, or hearing 'unauthorized' music files - the more you get a sick, sinking feeling in your gut that someone else has taken control of your machine.

US Federal Government Agencies have BANNED Microsoft Vista, and for good reason.

The Microsoft EULA takes control of your machine, stating directly: "this agreement only gives you some rights to use the software. Microsoft reserves all other rights." Even potentially deleting files or disabling programs.

Compared to the costs of Apple OS X or any Linux Distribution,

The Costs of Windows Vista are Unacceptable.

Keep in mind that Microsoft was convicted by U.S. Courts for its criminal behavior, and is being forced to pay $4 million A Day by the European Union for being in violation of their judgments.

Anti-freedom Vista takes away your rights - do you want to Confirm or Deny?

BOYCOTT WINDOWS VISTA MACHINES!

If you support Linux, freedom, democracy, or just want to keep control of Your own machine that You buy with Your own money, PROMOTE this idea now.

Microsoft - Where in the world did you think you were going to go today?

Let Dell know - You Don't Want Windows Vista. 869 Comments »

Should Apple licence OS X to Dell? | Bigmouth Strikes Again - Freelance journalist Gary Marshall on technology, the Internet, music, Macs and more

Operating Systems submitted by pwalker 01/30/07

There was an interesting op-ed by Doug Mohney in The Inquirer yesterday, which suggested that the launch of Vista provides a good opportunity for Apple - if it licences OS X to Dell.

However, Vista is being beaten like a dead horse by the mass media – most of them already are enthralled to the God of Jobs if you read between the lines, so Microsoft could make nuclear fusion work tomorrow and they’d give it a lukewarm review at best. The consensus view out of the babbling punditry is “Don’t buy Vista today, unless you have to buy a new computer tomorrow.”

On that front, I think the babbling pundits are right. Heh.

So what about Apple?

If Apple was serious, and I mean really serious, about gaining more PC market share, they’d realize they need to license/sell their operating system to another hardware manufacturer or two. Sure, Apple’s tried the license route before with mixed results, but it’s about time to bite the bullet, look into the mirror, and realize they should try something bold.

Apple should license their operating system to Dell.

Mohney isn’t suggesting that Apple should make OS X available to any PC user; the dangers of that (such as hardware incompatibilities or really crap machines ruining Apple’s reputation) have been talked to death for years. Rather, he’s suggesting that Apple could team up with a single PC manufacturing firm to make decent clones, expanding OS X’s market share without diluting the core Apple brand. It wouldn’t be an Apple Mac: it’d be a Dell Mac. Dell’s good at churning out PCs, so if Apple laid down strict criteria about what should and shouldn’t go into a clone you could get decent non-Apple Macs competing in different markets to Apple Macs. Does anyone really think Dell is capable of making something as sexy as a MacBook or as iconic as the iMac?

I’m sure Mohney will be inundated with angry emails, but I do wonder how many of the senders will have reacted similarly to suggestions a few years back that Macs should run Intel chips. I think his idea’s fascinating. 48 Comments »

Built in mouse instead of touchpad

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by martijnbruil 11/14/07

While working with my laptop I cannot get used with working with the touchpad. I still and always will prefer using a (small) mouse. The problem with the current external mouse is either the wire or the batterycharge. Not to mention the posibility to forget to pack it.

I would like to see Dell to replace the standard toutchpad solution on a laptop with a built-in detachable wireless optical mouse. The mouse charges when docked en is easy detachable by click-and-release. The mouse could be integrated in one of the four sides of the laptop.

Better and more versitile to work with than a touchpad and very usefull during presentations because of wireless use.

It would make a unique selling point for me. 5 Comments »

Dell and Windows Mellinum

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by windowsgenius 11/13/07

You know what sucks, dell only lets you get laptops and desktops with windows xp and vista. i mean come on! We as the consumer should be able to get our computers with windows 98 and ME if we want. Who cares if it is out dated or just plain dumb. We should get what we want without having to pay somewhere else for windows 98. Remember those old games like flight simular 95 and space simulator? they are to slow on our modern computers. but what if we want to play them? huh? think about it. alright? 7 Comments »

AMD on higher product lines in Laptops and Desktops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies submitted by daryldeal 11/11/07

Lack of AMD processors in the more expensive product lines in laptops in desktops is really non-consumer budget friendly. I mean, AMD nowadays provides the best Price/Performance ratios. Dont get me wrong saying INTEL core 2 duos arent, but AMD provides headroom flexibility for us consumers to have the best Price/Performance ratio for a laptop and desktop that we would surely enjoy, without not paying that much for performance.

For example in gaming. you guys can rig a laptop or desktop with a good/best performing AMD processor thats definitely cheaper than Intel C2D's. WIth that you can put additional firepower in the Video Card. Get my point? Now thats the way to go, Best price/performance ratios.

Get AMD's in those higher product lines of laptops and desktops, so that the consumers can experience the Price/Performance ratio to the fullest. 9 Comments »

Build a Dell Linux Distribution

Linux, New Product Ideas, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jemfisher 02/20/07

With the wave of support for the Linux kernel to power desktop PC's, I think its time for a company with the quality build that Dell has to provide users with PC's that work for them. The adoption of Linux to power Dell PC's would give Dell a greater freedom to move forward with innovation. With the adoption of a Linux kernel Dell would be able to sell PC to meet users' demands. Businesses demand different machines than home users, students demand different machines again, machines targeted at younger users, etc. 100 Comments »

Silent / Quiet Computers: Sound levels in decibels

Desktops and Laptops submitted by pchris 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**

I'd like Dell to provide the sound level in decibels for each of their desktops, under max load as well as at idle.

How a manufacturer can produce an expensive computer, and then have the user acoustic experience of that computer dominated by the noise generated by a cheap fan worth just pennies, for the entire lifetime of that computer, is incomprehensible. Computers are noisy when brand new, but those cheap fans begin to rub and oscillate and make additional annoying noises, frequently within a short period of time of purchase.

Personally, the peace and quiet of my personal workspace is very important to me, it's my sanctuary from the world where I can focus and be creative. To have that experience disrupted by cheap fans is sad, especially when slightly more expensive fans and some reasonable design would solve the issue. Another reason why I consider buying an Apple.

If the cost of a better sound design and fans is significant, it could be an extra cost option.
In general, Dell provides noise data of its products in the Environmental Datasheets. Tests are conducted according to ISO standards in a NVLAP accredited acoustics facility. Click here for more details

Dell: Support Open BIOSes for Linux

Dell, Linux submitted by phubert 10/10/07 **REVIEWED**

An Open BIOS for Linux would free it from the DOS legacy code and speed boot times.

The current BIOS is a legacy throwback... it's time to replace it!

Our current priority is to expand Linux availability by bringing more platforms and languages to market. Read what daniel_j has to say.
