Design & Form Factor

Desktops and Laptops submitted by logi 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

This forum is a great idea to get Dell back to #1.

What I like to see is new and innovative styling across the board on notebooks and desktops. Dell's product line looks 5yrs old and needs a total refresh.

As you can see Apple Inc. is winning conumers hearts because Apple owners are actually proud of displaying them in the living rooms instead of hiding them. Get rid of that XPS desktop design that thing is so ugly.. and come up with something consumers would be proud of displying in their media rooms.

Also I would like to see Dell create a sleak new design for a media center box so we can utilize vista home for the entertainment room and display it next to my audio and video units.

Thanks for listening Mr. Dell.

Make a Keyboard for Desktops with TRACKPAD!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by rlakes Jan 25

I am really sick of the traditional mouse for desktops... I work a lot of hours per day on my computer and my right hand began to hurt of touching in the same position for hours and hours the traditional mouse of my desk top... Unfourtunatly I don't have the money to afford a laptop to have the option to use the trackpad or an external mose.. so please Dell.. please build a keyboard for desktops that have a trackpad! it will be great that it might include multitouch technology....
I need it.... my right hand will be pleased! 11 Comments »

Fix the M1330 Defects

XPS products, Laptops submitted by hoodedthing Mar 18

Okay, I just bought this great XPS m1330, but it's literally falling apart. The top left hinge cover fell off, because it can't clip in because it's not the right size to begin with, or the frame is shifted too far right to begin with (factory defect, nothing is broken on the part). The plate that covers the two headphone jacks and the microphone jack also fell off, I guess it wasn't glued on well enough. I'm not real upset about this, but it's pretty pathetic when my state of the art flagship laptop has pieces FALLING OFF of it. I fixed both instances with some superglue, and they're as good as new now, but tweak the assembly line for the m1330 or something so that this doesn't keep happening.

Here are pictures of the hinge cover:http://www.freewebs.com/iacobus/xps1.jpg

http://www.freewebs.com/iacobus/xps2.jpg

Also, it seems that everyone has this problem with the hinge cover, and that it's not just me.

Check out the fastest Vista laptop PCMagazine tested - and try to make something competitive.

Operating Systems, Laptops submitted by jmxz 10/29/07

http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,136649-page,3-c,notebooks/article.html

The fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year is a Mac. Try that again: The fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year--or for that matter, ever--is a Mac. Not a Dell, not a Toshiba, not even an Alienware. The $2419 (plus the price of a copy of Windows Vista, of course) MacBook Pro's PC WorldBench 6 Beta 2 score of 88 beats Gateway's E-265M by a single point, but the MacBook's score is far more impressive simply because Apple couldn't care less whether you run Windows.

Interesting who has the fastest Vista laptop. Best thing is that that vendor doesn't even force you to get Vista.

Dell, there are 2 Ideas to copy from this model (which is selling very well):

  1. copy them in making a very high performance laptop.
  2. copy them in not requiring Vista on the very high performance laptop.

Make a 2 chip processor

Desktops, XPS products submitted by junior Feb 9

Dell
Try to make a 2 chip processor (which would make it an 8 core processor) to compete with Apple's Mac Pro. Call it the Intel Xeon Processor and put it in your new XPS 730/730 H2C as an option. Then this would be the most popular desktop in the world because Mac OS X doesn't have as much games than Windows....which would make this the most powerful and popular desktop in the world.

Think about it......more money for Dell
hmmmmmmmmm... 13 Comments »

Video-input on the XPS One & XPS Notebooks

Desktops, Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by smotchberry Jan 30

I propose that Dell should be one of the first companies to incorporate a video-input feature onto their high-end laptops and all in ones.

If Dell wants to truely make a mark with the entertainment and productivity crowd I think this would be a great feature, as there are always more than a few situations an extra or substitute high-def monitror could come in handy.

Plus, it's almost as if Dell would be throwing in an (admitedly small) high def monitor in with every purchase. 2 Comments »

XPS One - More Video Power on XPS One?

XPS products submitted by stormrider451 Feb 18

Hello there. I was wondering if DELL was thinking about making their new XPS One computers available with better graphics cards? Gateway's One already comes standard with a Ati Mobility HD 2600 XT, while Dell's only comes with Ati Mobility HD 2400. I think DELL should try to either make it so one can choose to upgrade to a better graphics card as you build your XPS One or make the Entretainment XPS One come standard with at least an Ati Mobility HD 2600 XT card. If Gateway can do it, so can you DELL! I refuse to buy a gateway, because DELL is my life long computer company, but I cant buy it if it does not do what I wanted to do. 6 Comments »

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/17/07

Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)

OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as:
- Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections!
- Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls
- Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others
&nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM]
- PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program
- Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing
- Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player
- Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System

Pre-installed quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. Cast your vote for Linux and other free software. Cast your vote for the Universal Education PC [ed: article removed/merged by dell_admin] utilizing free software.

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Use magsafe power connectors

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

Please make Ubuntu XPS Notebook cheaper than XPS Vista Notebook

Linux, Operating Systems, XPS products submitted by dki May 26

Hi,
I have tested the price of the default Vista-Notebook XPS M1330 (in Germany) and the Ubuntuversion with the same Configuration. The result was amazing :(:

Vistaversion: 909,00 €
Linuxversion: 923,44 €

Is Vista cheaper than Ubuntu?? I can not imagine.

So my wish: Make Ubuntu-Laptops competitive! 31 Comments »

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Removable wireless keyboard with touchpad for notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products submitted by tourbillon 07/05/07

There are currently no wireless keyboards available that have the same key layout as an Inspiron and I don't know of any wireless keyboards with a built-in touchpad.

I work with my Inspiron every day and use an old Cirque keyboard with built in touchpad that requires the use of both a serial port for the touchpad and a keyboard port. This allows me to put the keyboard in my lap reducing stress on my arms and hands while the notebook display is at eye level on my desk.

I even tried to modify an old Inspiron 3500 keyboard to use a standard keyboard driver circuitry but the matrix of the 3500 keyboard wouldn't adapt. I would have been very happy to be able to use the bottom part of the 3500 with keyboard and touchpad wired to the 8200 that I currently develop with but I couldn't figure out a way.

Even if the power and size requirements prevented a wireless version, I would be very happy just to have a keyboard with touchpad that could be removed and plugged into the main body of the notebook using USB.

Ideally, the keyboard/touchpad, charged when in the unit, could be removed from the main body of the notebook. The area where the keyboard/touchpad went could be used to place paper documents which would be handy; especially for air travel where tray space is limited. For example, with keyboard/touchpad in lap and the notebook on the tray, a document that needs to be copied or reference could be placed in the vacant area where the keyboard/touchpad went.

This idea could also reduce the number of upper back/neck problems due to improper ergonomics.

Because I use the Ctrl key HEAVILY, the keyboards suggested in the comments won't do as they all have the Ctrl key in a different location.

XPS ONE UPGRRADE

I want a 1900x1200 24 inch screen. What is the point of blue ray if you can't watch it on a full HD screen. I would also like 45 nm intel processors. 2 Comments »

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.
