Music during initial setup

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by patrick72 May 12

Disable music during the initial setup of business class laptops.

I work in a shared office and every time I setup a new laptop everyone has to listen to the annoying music until setup is complete. I can't find any way turn it off, the volume and mute buttons do not work until I get to the desktop.

This may seem petty but my co-workers are trying to talk to customers and distractions like Dell startup music are not appreciated. Comment »

Display with No Cable Connected

Monitors and Displays submitted by lyonadmiral May 12

As an IT professional who annually will setup systems in count of 50 plus, there is nothing more time consuming or wasteful than disconnecting the VGA cable from the LCD panel only to put the DVI cable on. These displays need to come from the factory with NO cables connected to the monitor. Comment »

ATX conversion kit for XPS 700 / 710 / 720

Desktops, XPS products submitted by huggy_bear Mar 19

Apparently the upcoming XPS 730 is now using a standard ATX form factor for its motherboard (vs. BTX for the previous XPS generation(s), i.e. XPS 700, 710 and 720).
Since the XPS 700 was originally advertised as upgradeable at its introduction, it would be more than welcome from Dell to offer the option of an upgrade/conversion kit for XPS 700/710/720 owners to upgrade their system to the same ATX form factor (for a decent price). Kit would provide the following components:
1) ATX motherboard backplate mount
2) Power supply connectors/ATX converter
3) back panel
4) front panel I/O connector/ATX converter (power button, LED lights, I/O (USB/IEE1394), sound...). 25 Comments »

XPS One - Unecessary Adobe Elements Studio on XPS One.

Sales Strategies, Software, XPS products submitted by stormrider451 Feb 25

Hello there.. By coming standard on every XPS One model, we are technically being forced to buy Adobe Elements Studio. This program is listed as having a $350 dollar value, something that unecessarily brings up the price on these XPS One's. Now I realize we are probably not paying the full 350 dollar value of this program (as it was pointed out on the comments), but still we are paying something. Why not make it so that we can choose if we want this program or not, thus making this great computer more affordable. At the same time, you would be giving us the choice of using the money on something that might interest us more such as adding more RAM or a better video card (whenever you make it so that adding more RAM or a better video card is an option on the XPS One). Any lowering of prices, no matter how minute is always appreciated especially when you are short in money. Think about it dell!! Give us some flexibility please! I want an XPS One but I have NO use for the Adobe Element's Studio. It would be a total waste of money for me!

-Thanks! 10 Comments »

Take the whole anti-vista resistance thing and exploit it

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by lee_stricklin Mar 4

Windows Vista is arguably (meaning there are people that dispute this) the WORST operating system since Millenium Edition. So keep loading all of the computers with XP until M$ doesn't allow the company to do so and after that start advertising Ubuntu 7.10 systems that are preloaded with lots of good freeware on them and maybe some non-freeware as well. This is a list of software that could be loaded along with the stuff that's included with Ubuntu. I think this would make Linux machines look just as good as (if not better) than Windows:

Default desktop environment: Gnome (included with Ubuntu)
Other desktop environments: KDE, FluxBox,XPDE desktop environment (similar to XP's environment), Xfce, Enlightenment

Freeware games: Cube, Cube 2 (sauerbraten), Armagetron Advance, BZ Flag, Astro Menace, Assault Cube, Nexuiz, Alien Arena, Tremulous, Warsow, Legends(Tribes clone that ROCKS), Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, Neverball / Neverputt, Glest

Non-free software: Pioneer Linux Electricity (Windows Emulator)

Graphics: Kolour Paint 30 Comments »

Dell: Include SMART Hard Drive application on all systems sold with a rotating hard drive and any SMART enabled device.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by jorge Mar 4

Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology = S.M.A.R.T.

Dell you sell a hard drive with all the systems you have, yet you never include the software that reads the hard drive monitoring parameters. These parameters can alert the customer of any issues with the hard drive from temperature to errors reading or writing and can aide your support group in diagnosing a hard drive that if failing or failed.

Help your customers out and include the software that reports the error parameters which all modern hard drives list out via SMART!

Here's more info for you who don't believe S.M.A.R.T. 5 Comments »

Make 64 bit Vista a standard OS option for all SMB laptops

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by stewie Mar 4

For some bizarre reason, the 64 bit Vista option for Small Business Laptops is not included in the standard OS options even though the machines are available w/ 4GB...

Even more strange.., the 64 bit option for small business does exist but it's hard to find and it's not possible to get in all configurations.

I'd like to see it available as apparently the OEM OS license is only for the specific version the unit comes with (32 bit or 64 bit) and cannot be upgraded. 5 Comments »

Blu-Ray combo drives

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by randoman00 Mar 3

Rather then simply offering the expensive 500 dollar slot loading BD-R drive for the XPS laptops, offer a less expensive Blu-ray combo drive for the XPS laptops. I am not sure everybody has the need to burn 25 gig disks yet but might like to use it watch HD movies. 6 Comments »

Make (PRODUCT) RED as an item in system configuration to let more people contribute

Advertising and Marketing, Desktops and Laptops submitted by programatix Mar 3

Dell (PRODUCT) RED items base configurations are too exclusive for common people to purchase. The base configuration is set too high making it impossible to those who really wanted to contribute to really contribute.

Further more, by doing so, it may look like customers have to pay more to more party (mainly Microsoft, for Windows Vista Ultimate) and Dell (because of higher configuration) but Dell is making name as RED partner like a parasite.

I'm not saying that Dell (PRODUCT) RED is ill-purposed but by making the (PRODUCT) RED items too exclusive, people might end up thinking that way.

So, Dell, it would be best if (PRODUCT) RED is included as an item in system configuration. By doing so, people who wanted to contribute during any system purchase can just select it. Please also publish a report of (PRODUCT) RED item purchase and make sure that the exact value of the item is transfered to the fund. What I mean is, let say the price for the item is 10 USD, then 10 USD must be transfered. 15 Comments »

Better heat dissipation for laptops

Laptops submitted by jervis961 Mar 4

A New Hampshire company has created a process to create large sheets of Carbon Nanotubes, making it possible for the technology to be used in construction of electronics.

http://www.dailytech.com/Sheets+of+Cheap+Carbon+Nanotubes+Now+a+Reality/artic...

Carbon Nanotubes are said to be 5 times more efficiant than copper in heat sinks. Part of the reason is that while copper moves heat radially, carbon nanotubes move heat in one direction.

http://www.dailytech.com/OCZ+Displays+Carbon+Nanotube+Cooler/article7571.htm

Other interesting qualities of Nanotubes are, shielding from EMI, superior wireless antennas, weight (only 20% of the weight of copper) and stregth.

Even though Dell is trying to reduce it's carbon footprint, the benefits of Nanotubes should not be overlooked. 6 Comments »

Laptops for Third World students

Advertising and Marketing, Education, Laptops submitted by roi12341234 Feb 23

Everyone has heard of the various $100 computer projects for the third world. I think its not needed, There are probably thousands of older model working laptops sitting in the hands of American students. If Dell offers the right incentives (a rebate ..) alot of students would be willing to change their old laptops to new models. Dell can collect these old models and start a program to reship them to the third world. This will generate revevnues and excellent publicity for dell, while using existing hardware for the third world. Impossible? with dells control of US colleges i dont think so. Comment »

IdeaStorm: This Idea is for Idea's as what the Current Lighting Rod Should be (you seem to loose focus and leave the old ones eventhough they're dead)

IdeaStorm submitted by jorge Mar 3

Well lately we've seen the Lighting Rod topic to be left stale and dangling.

Lets use this idea to start our brainstorm of what the Lighting Rod Topic should be. At least allow for a list of them so it doesn't get stale and boring if not just stale and non-idea producing. (like we need even more ideas) 6 Comments »

make dell website visible with Firefox on Linux

Dell Web Site submitted by tashmooclam 10/24/07

Among several websites that cannot be viewed running Firefox on Linux, Dell is one of them.
Why is this?
Does Dell know about this bug in their website?
I find it very ironic to say the least. I am running Linux now, but I cannot shop on Dell's website for a new Linux laptop.
Al Gore invented the internet, can't Dell make websites that work with Linux? 5 Comments »

Dell: The Dell Browser Computer

New Product Ideas, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jorge Mar 3

Dell! Create the first Dell Browser Computer!

Yes you read it right, I'll repeat it for those who have a tough time, Dell Browser Computer!

The computer will not have an OS or at least not an OS in the true sense of the word, yes it needs an underlying support system to prop up the Browser (using as many neutral words here to not lean on any side of the fence). Dell will construct this system to boot up and pop up a browser to interact with the computer world as seen by this computer. All interactions will be done solely through the browser, from surfing the net to accessing files which of course have to be browser compatible through addon's and special "Dell" provided services to process these files correctly.

So what do you do with this computer, well pretty much everything you do today but through the browser. Any service such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, file management, calculator will all be accessible via the browser, yet I know I didn't mention every possible app in the planet but this is an example so if your app isn't listed fill it in here ______. Dell will provide the services to these applications so Dell will get the customers's service from day one! New Browser App, well its accessible through the Dell service, lost the computer well don't worry your files are on the Dell storage server, just power up, update the computer go get your files as you had been doing previous to the crash, death of the other Browser computer. Yes all interaction with the Dell services will be Secure using the latest in Cryptography to satisfy even the CIA director and of course in regulation with the NSA (making sure to cover for any people who don't trust this) of course for out of the US sales those countries will have to set their requirements.

All in all its a win-win for both the Dell Customer and Dell, customers always get latest and greatest app and Dell reaps the rewards of supplying the service (and monthly service charge, wink wink).

Yes I probably left out a few wrinkles and intracaties but hey thats what the discussion to follow is for, right. 27 Comments »

Sales strategy (wonka style)

Sales Strategies submitted by doc Mar 3

Suppose you want to release a new computer but youre afraid htat people wont be motivated to buy it. Heres an idea. Use the willy wonka method. Place five "golden tickets" in the boxes of 5 computers and distribute them throught the world. These Golden tickets will allow the finder to take a tour of the DELL industry and give them a a few upgrades to their computers. I mean who doesnt want to see how DELL makes its top of the line products. heres the headline "DELL goes Willy Wonka. 4 Comments »

White LED Screen for XPS M1530

XPS products submitted by realskript Jan 19

I commend Dell for listening to the Public and providing better resolution screens for the marvelous M1530.

But it must be noted, that White LED screen is essential.
Brighter, lighter, and more power efficient, make this a must for the M1530.
You've put it on the M1330 from its release, and it is about time for the M1530 to have the same privilege. 2 Comments »

Dell Kiosks

Sales Strategies, Simplify IT submitted by jandern3 Mar 2

This is an idea that has surfaced before, but the reasoning behind my idea I believe is slightly different. Dell needs to match Apple's attempt at first hand service in BestBuy. The Dell rep should be quickly able to suggest computer specs based on simple customer requests such as; speed, lightweight, gaming, movie viewing, memory storage, etc.

This rep should then go through the online ordering process with the customer. This would therefore continue to enable Dell's "just in the knick of time" supply chain strategy, but would also give the customer the one-on-one person service that so many people desire. I believe that Dell is losing way too many customers based on the fact that the personalized-ordering process is a little too complex for first time PC buyers. 5 Comments »
