SIM cards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by dwolfe56 Jan 17 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I think that all Dell laptops should have the option of shipping with an integrated SIM card reader, to allow for wireless broadband via GPRS, EDGE, and other GSM-ready data services. As well, the laptop could be used as a phone on both WiFi (VoIP) and GSM networks!

A number of laptops, including the XPS M1330 offers an integrated SIM card reader.

True Inspiron Mini

Laptops submitted by brokencrystal Jun 29

The latest buzz is this Dell Inspiron Mini / Dell E / Dell E Slim.

I am not sure if the Inspiron Mini is the same as the Dell E, but I propose making another mini that is built for power users who need something ultra-portable. Sometimes you don't want people to know you have a notebook on you or you are afraid to set it down and walk away for a minute because it might not be there when you return. It would be nice to have a full featured notebook that would fit in your pocket. I have wasted countless dollars on Pocket PCs that don't run the software I would like them to run and this is the answer to that problem.

I am not proposing you stop making the budget mini, but I am asking that you make a full featured unit the size of the budget mini for those who are willing to shell out the additional cash for the convenience of such a device. It should have an optional docking station for an optical drive and ease of use while not on the road.

Here are some specifications of what I am looking for in a non-budget mini:

Processor – Around 1.6 to 2 GHz
OS – Linux, XP, and Vista Home Basic Edition available
LCD – 8.9 inch widescreen display (no larger than 9 inches)
Webcam – 1 MP Webcam or better
Optical Drive – Optional via docking station
Memory 1-2 GB Shared with video
Hard Drive – Choice of solid state or conventional HD
Video Card – Intel or ATI accelerated graphics
Sound – Stereo speakers built in
Networking – Wireless 802.11x, Ethernet, Bluetooth
Ports – Firewire, USB, VGA/DVI, microphone/headphone ports, dock port (for optional docking station)

Optional accessories – Docking Station, USB mouse, USB keyboard, USB optical drive, SD Card, Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, USB hard disk drive, amplified speakers, case, additional power adapters, extended batteries.

Docking station should have a slot or notebook type CD/DVD-RW drive, USB, VGA/DVI, Firewire, microphone/headphone ports, express card slot, SATA notebook drive slot or eSATA port.

It would be nice if it looked like a Studio or and XPS notebook, but much smaller. (pocket sized) 11 Comments »

A Docking Station for the Dell Inspiron Mini / Dell E / Dell E Slim

Laptops submitted by brokencrystal Jun 29

It would be nice if an optional docking station were available for the Dell Inspiron Mini / Dell E / Dell E Slim. It could include an optical CD/DVD-RW drive, an eSATA port, an internal SATA notebook drive, VGA/DVI ports, USB ports, an Ethernet port, microphone/headphone ports, an express card slot, and anything else that cannot fit in the mini notebook. 5 Comments »

Built-In Notebook / Laptop Digitizer

Laptops submitted by brokencrystal Jun 29

It would be nice if a digitizer such as the Wacom could be put in place or combination with the touch pad on a laptop. It could be in the same location as the touch pad, and if it was in combination with it, you could use a stylus for digitizer functionality, or your finger for touch pad functionality. This way us graphics artists, designers, and engineers could use a digitizer on the go. The stylus could slide into the side of the laptop like it does on a PDA. You could use Wacom's technology to do this and offer it on the Studio and XPS line as an option/upgrade. The stylus could be touch sensitive as the Wacom already supports this technology. 2 Comments »

Offer Vista Home Basic For Dell Inspiron Mini / Dell E / Dell E Slim

Inspiron products, Operating Systems submitted by dawn4598 Jul 8

I know Vista isn't the most popular OS ever made, but the fact is that Microsoft does not want to support it anymore and as an effect, most software vendors have stopped or will stop making software for XP. Please offer Vista Home Basic for your new Dell Inspiron Mini / Dell E / Dell E Slim like HP does with their new HP Mini-Note. This way you stay in competition with HP and those of us who have learned to tolerate Vista will be able to run the latest software that is not offered for XP. 25 Comments »

Have more respect for your Inspiron Mini customers!

Advertising and Marketing, Inspiron products submitted by mostlyharmless22 Aug 18

I have been going back and looking at blogs/forums from May and June, trying to determine whether the Inspiron Mini is "vaporware" or an actual planned product. I found instances where Dell made specific comments about their "upcoming netbook," acknowledged information released on Engadget, and even commented that it was likely that Engadget was where the next tidbit of information would be found.

Now that everyone is all stirred up and waiting for the official release, we get total silence from Dell. Not "there are delays but be patient" -- total silence. Even if you're not ready to release specs yet, you could have mentioned it at your press conference. Your failure to do so shows a complete lack of understanding or respect for your customers. People, including me, are angry and many are defecting to buy other mini notebooks.

Learn something about marketing strategy and respect for your customers! 36 Comments »

New Inspiron Mini Design

Inspiron products submitted by brokencrystal Aug 19

I know it's too late for the first generation of the Mini Inspiron, but this idea is for the second generation.

Instead of having the mini look like this:

Could we please have the upcoming mini look like this:

The XPS and Studio notebooks look so much nicer than the leaked photos of the Inspiron Mini, so why not make the next version of the mini look like the XPS or Studio, just much smaller? Maybe you could make a higher end mini notebook called the XPS Mini or the Studio Mini for those of us who have to have top of the line in a small package? 11 Comments »
