light up keyboards

Dell submitted by theonlyho 05/13/07

Maybe I'm not up to date, but since Apple has lighted up keyboards, it'd be awesome if laptops have lighted up keyboards also. It might be out on Dell now or not, lighted up keyboards are handy either way. 5 Comments »

Dell: Support Open BIOSes for Linux

Dell, Linux submitted by phubert 10/10/07 **REVIEWED**

An Open BIOS for Linux would free it from the DOS legacy code and speed boot times.

The current BIOS is a legacy throwback... it's time to replace it!

Our current priority is to expand Linux availability by bringing more platforms and languages to market. Read what daniel_j has to say.

Show: Demoted, Promoted, and TOTAL vote counts!

IdeaStorm submitted by phubert 10/12/07

You now show the TOTAL count above the PROMOTE button...

Based on input from WINOFFICE, let -us- suggest:

* Show PROMOTED -above- the Promote button
* Show DEMOTED -below- the Demote button
* Show the TOTAL -between the Promote and Demote buttons

NOTE: to clarify -
1) You already 'know how' to display a count above one of these buttons.
2) You already collect BOTH counts
3) collect the counts SEPARATELY (2 counters, not one)
4) Display EACH above their respective BUTTONS

PLEASE DO THIS!

New tv commercial

Advertising and Marketing submitted by sugarbear 10/14/07

I would like to see a new tv commercial with M. Dell in it. Instead of the glamor and glitz, try M. Dell in the family room, feet up on the footstool, playing games on his XPS with the duo 30" screens. He should be intently gaming and then just turn and smile at the camera. Then the screens go to the Dell logo. 6 Comments »

Change the online chat system

Service and Support submitted by visiocloud 10/07/07

When I attempt to get customer service from the online chat program, after entering my Customer number or my order number it pulls up a page telling me all agents are busy, and I have two options:
Email them a request for help or
Try my chat request again.
...
Basically to get online chat support, I have to click the button at the exact right time? Whatever happened to queu lines, I would so much rather wait than spend all day attempting ot hit that button at the right time. Comment »

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas submitted by visiocloud 10/07/07

I love having GPS on my computer but it would be nice not to have to deal with all the wire, I think an express card or an internal gps option would be awesome. 29 Comments »

Lock down accounts on IdeaStorm which vote for hundreds of ideas in under a couple minutes.

IdeaStorm submitted by jorge 10/08/07

Anyone voting for hundreds of ideas in under a couple minutes is not reading the ideas and really not voting as the sites use intended (TOU's), lock down those accounts till the java programmer can add a vote timer and not allow votes to happen so fast, as in a vote between ideas counter. I'd say at least two minutes between votes so the voter can at least read the idea and interpret it. 29 Comments »

Make a dedicated '@' key on keyboards.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by badblood 10/09/07

Most keyboards I've worked on have the '@' symbol merged with the number 2 key. We all use @ a lot these days and I kind of think it's time that it was given its own key, or at least was in a more convenient location - closer to the shift key. The keyboard I am typing on now has two ridiculous 'windows' keys. What a waste. Why not make one of them an '@' key. At least then I'd press it now and again.

I also think the brackets should be swapped with the parenthesis, which are used a lot more....

Anywho......... 27 Comments »

Dell Laptops: No modem

Laptops submitted by tleavit 10/09/07

Specifically in my case Latitudes in businesses: Dell needs to remove modems as default hardware. Understanding that people out there today are actually still using them, for now it should be an option but I don’t think every laptop made needs to have one installed by default. Utilize the real-estate freed up on the back for something new such as HDMI video/sound or such. 17 Comments »

I don't want an AGEIA PhysX card.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by sharoz 10/09/07

Don't make the AGEIA PhysX card a mandatory part of the XPS M1730. Not everyone needs or wants one.

Make it an optional component. 7 Comments »

Dell: Note the positive PR your Ubuntu stuff gets you - front page NY Times Online article on Ubuntu/Dell

Linux submitted by jmxz 10/04/07

This Dell/Ubuntu article made the NYTimes Online front page.

The New York Times
The Next Leap for Linux
Published: October 4, 2007

Dell is testing the waters with a Linux-equipped notebook computer, in a challenge to Microsoft and Apple.
...
Until recently, major PC makers shied away from Linux. Now the industry is watching as Dell is selling two Linux-equipped desktop models ...and a ...notebook PC. (Hewlett-Packard offers Linux systems to businesses, and Lenovo, the Chinese company that bought I.B.M.’s PC division, sells Linux machines in China and says it will soon offer Linux-based computers in the United States.)
...
Now if only Dell would offer it on some more desirable systems (looking for a quad-core desktop now); and price it competitively internationally (where they still charge a few hundred dollar premium), this Linux effort might have a chance of working.

The Idea is that Dell should take note of the positive PR and continue the PR efforts around it. Ubuntu+Dell is a newsworthy topic of interest to the mainstream media today.

Windows key becomes "Super" key

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by hexagrapher 10/05/07

In many Linux distributions the "Windows" key is already called the "Super" key. "Super" is neutral and so does not favor anyone; "Super" fits thematically as a meta-key between "Ctrl" and "Alt". 3 Comments »

Submit hardware specifications to the Linux Driver Project

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux submitted by upstaked 10/05/07 **REVIEWED**

Back in January kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman from Novell started a project offering companies free Linux driver development.

This proved so successful that Novell made it his full-time job and turned to a project with over 200 kernel developers: http://www.linuxdriverproject.org/ .

So Dell, submit specs and convince your hardware providers to do so too. I want to spend my money on great new hardware that runs on Linux.

We constantly work with our hardware partners to develop and maintain open-sourced drivers. Also, we make it clear that through their own developers (or other projects like the Linux Driver Project) they need to deliver on drivers.

BOYCOTT VISTA!

Operating Systems submitted by reg 03/21/07

Dell Dudes,

Microsoft reserves the right to spy on your computer.

The more you learn how Microsoft EULA has the right to enter your computer, check out what software you are using, and also use the DRM tools in Vista to prevent you from seeing files, data, videos, or hearing 'unauthorized' music files - the more you get a sick, sinking feeling in your gut that someone else has taken control of your machine.

US Federal Government Agencies have BANNED Microsoft Vista, and for good reason.

The Microsoft EULA takes control of your machine, stating directly: "this agreement only gives you some rights to use the software. Microsoft reserves all other rights." Even potentially deleting files or disabling programs.

Compared to the costs of Apple OS X or any Linux Distribution,

The Costs of Windows Vista are Unacceptable.

Keep in mind that Microsoft was convicted by U.S. Courts for its criminal behavior, and is being forced to pay $4 million A Day by the European Union for being in violation of their judgments.

Anti-freedom Vista takes away your rights - do you want to Confirm or Deny?

BOYCOTT WINDOWS VISTA MACHINES!

If you support Linux, freedom, democracy, or just want to keep control of Your own machine that You buy with Your own money, PROMOTE this idea now.

Microsoft - Where in the world did you think you were going to go today?

Let Dell know - You Don't Want Windows Vista. 818 Comments »
