Clean drive.

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by cryonaka 05/28/07

This is my 1st idea, I hope no one else has posted this so I don't take up room.
Well, my idea is that they should make it an option to come with no operation system. I prefer buying a cheaper, clean computer that I may just install whatever operating system I want without having to install the old one, or pay for it. (Well you could get Ubuntu to not pay for the operating system, but then again that limits the computers to choose from.) 5 Comments »

New Product Ideas submitted by skylarkguy 05/30/07

Add some colors!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by bajtalan.hunor 02/24/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

In my opinion nowadays colors like gray or black are getting too old. Why Dell does not follow other companies like Sony or Apple or the tiny Flybook. People like colors because it expresses their personality, not everybody is a businessman or businesswoman, we like colors. For example white is getting more and more popular but there are other trendy colors out there.

So PLEASE ADD SOME COLOR TO YOUR NOTEBOOK AND DESKTOP LINES and make them look like jewelry and not like a piece of plastic, do some cool design.

We like to show a laptop to which people say WOW. So the "WOW STARTS NOW"!

The new Inspiron and XPS notebooks do come in colors now, but stay tuned for more ways to customize the look of your PC.

Make all parts optional

Sales Strategies submitted by yank 05/20/07

Plenty of people spend a LOT of time shopping around on Dell's site for a great deal. They trust the brand and haven't the time or interest to build there own PC so when they see a good deal they try and buy that new Dell PC with as few options as they can manage.
Let them!
Allow them to remove:
Monitor
Keyboard
Mouse
Hard Drive
Video Card
Etc.
Keep just the minimum basics and allow them to pick and choose what they want! 12 Comments »

Graphics Solutions

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Gaming submitted by bawambold 06/01/07

The graphics choices need some work.

1. Why would someone pay more than full retail for a card when it takes no more than two minutes to put it in?

2. Why is there no 8800 320mb and 640mb option on the 410? It makes no sense to jump from the 8600 gts to the 8800 gtx (which shouldn't be offered considering the power supply requirements are 475 watts and the current power supply is 375 watts).

3. If you are going to offer ATI cards, don't just offer the bottom of the barrel. Comment »

Power Supplies

Gaming submitted by bawambold 05/30/07

I would like to see the option for your power supply. The Dimensions are great computers but no one can build a gaming p.c. on its 325 watt power supply nor is the 375 watt power supply in the XPS 410 very ample. Something in the 450 to 500 range would be much better suited and gamers would not mind paying the little bit extra. 5 Comments »

Support higher speed memory

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Gaming submitted by shirk 05/19/07

Stop offering quad core CPU, SLI graphic cards, and terabyte hard drive systems that are limited to older low speed memory. Customers who purchase these higher end systems want their components to be up to date and cutting edge, so drop the ancient 533-667 mhz memory. Also stop crippling motherboards so that they wont support higher speed memory so customers are stuck without a choice. Give customers current memory, 800 mhz and up, for their brand new systems. 2 Comments »

Advertise Graphics RAM correctly

Advertising and Marketing submitted by joffe100 04/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

When we say we want to buy a 512Mb graphics card we really do want a 512Mb graphics card - not 512Mb with 256mb physical memory with 256mb shared! This is really BAD and misleading advertising - you do not see other RAM memory being sold 1Gb (512Mb physical, 512Mb shared!)

Should read: 512Mb physical memory and it actually be 512Mb physical memory

NOT: 512Mb** and then some tiny asterixed disclaimer on a linked page that points out that the 512Mb is some funky combination of 3Mb physical and the rest being pulled from virtual memory - this kills many graphic intense apps and games...

suprised no-one has sued over this? Not sure many buyers are even aware....

6 major issues to be fixed by Dell

Dell, Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by jervis961 02/17/07

Dell became a top company by providing choice and customer service to a customer that wasn't available at the time but has since fallen behind the pack in these areas. Needing a translator when calling customer support is unnacceptable and other companies are rapidly passing Dell in technology advancements. While this site is a good start, many things need to be changed for Dell to become the market leader again.

1. Customer support needs to be in well spoken English and with employees who are allowed to do more than just read from a script. If they are speaking with a computer savvy customer the rep should be allowed to deviate from the script as long as they don't go outside the relm of normal policy.

2. Better options: Other companies offer high end components in small computers but Dell only supplies intel video processors in its 14" laptop. Dell needs to allow customers to get the size computer they need but with options from low cost through the high end so they can get a computer that is "Purely you".

3. Less forced options: I hate that I am paying for and XPS with internet security when I don't need it because I already have a subsciption that will transfer over or AOL is installed when I know I don't need it. They need to add an option of none of the above to all the added software sections.

4. Better pricing: Why is it over $200 to upgrade from 1 GB of 533 MHZ ram to 2 GB of 677 MHZ RAM? I can go to Crucial.com and get the 2GB 677MHZ kit for under $200. Upgrading with Dell after you own is even worse at over $300 this is crazy.

5. Custom Dell website: Customers want to feel special why not make a MYDELL website that when you log in you get a site designed the way you want it. If you aren't interested in the small business site it gets removed, you don't like to go thru the accessories sections when customizing a system so you don't see that section. Click on customer support and a list of your computer pops up asking which one you need help with and only shows the options for that system.

6. Customer loyalty rewards: I have bought 6 Dell systems over the last few years, why can't I get better customer service or pricing due to my loyalty to the company? 72 Comments »

Make longer lasting batteries for better portability

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptop Power submitted by winoffice 05/05/07 **IN PROGRESS**

Don't make us recharge our laptops' batteries so often! A recent Cnet article (posted at Cnet's news site at about May 5, 2007) explains that Windows Vista's Aero Glass feature gives you less battery life. So, if we want Windows Vista, then we either have to recharge more often, or pay extra for more and better batteries! Instead, make Dell get rid of the batteries which quickly lose their charge...and come up with something that would give us longer battery life as follows (under Windows Vista), without making us stay away from Windows Vista or pay an extra $99 for another and better battery.

Basic laptops: at least 2 1/2 hours battery life
Entertainment laptops: at least 3 1/2 hours battery life
XPS laptops: at least 4 1/2 hours battery life 31 Comments »

Dell recommends, Ubuntu, like did with Windows Vista!

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by oagostinho 05/29/07

Linux

Linux, Software submitted by johnpro 04/23/07

I personal do not use any dell machines, I am an IBM fan. But I do like that you are going to offer Linux as an optional operating system. I also like the idea of Firefox being the main web browser on any machine. I would defiantly like to see openSUSE 10.2 or SUSE 10 as one of the optional Linuxs. With Dell entering into the Linux market hopefully other manufactures like Lenovo/IBM and HP/Compaq will do the same. Best of luck to Dell selling Linux. 1 Comment »

Preinstalled Ubuntu

Linux, Sales Strategies, Software submitted by webdev 02/25/07

I would like to see Dell computers with a Linux distro like Ubuntu pre-installed with everything working smoothly.

Also, please put the following free software preinstalled on your Windows machines:

* Firefox

* OpenOffice

* the GIMP or Paint.net

No more "craplets" like pre-installed AOL, etc.

By doing those things you will be offering more value than your competition. Linux in particular has thousands of free programs available for download. Comment »

Clean system with no extra software BUT CHOOSE

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by mikeweb 02/23/07

Most users have their own software and after getting a dell, they have to get rid of the pre-installed software first. Then they can enjoy your new computer. A great option is on first boot to give a choice what to install. Including:

Choose to get (latest version) and install:

AOL
MSN
OpenOffice
Firefox
Skype
ICQ
Acrobat Reader
Plugins (flash, shockwave, etc.)

This should be a huge list categorized.

In the end we all need one of there programs like flash and pdf reader. 2 Comments »

Flexible OS selection

Operating Systems, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Desktops and Laptops submitted by frobert 02/20/07

Woould GREATLY appreciate the ability to select more than ONE OS for a new computer. Given the ONLY choice of XP Media stinks! One should have all XP choices.
Having a linux boot sector would be good also.
No reason why Firefox can't be placed on the new unit @ Dell--it's FREE.

Dell just needs MORE selections especially since it touts building YOUR OWN computer THEN give us the abilitly to CHOOSE !!! 1 Comment »

More OS choices

Dell Web Site, Operating Systems submitted by yop 02/19/07

I would like to see more choices of OS like... No OS, Linux, Windows.
Also Better Linux driver support, but better Linux support in general.

Make the fan on laptops make less noise please.
Also more choices of software like Firefox, OpenOffice, Thunderbird etc, etc.

Don't like to be forced to buy an OS that I'm not going to use, like MS Windows.
Don't see the point of wasting money of stuff that I never going to use, since I always install Linux based system like Debian, Ubuntu and soo. 4 Comments »

Pre-install Google Pack

Software submitted by wulf 02/26/07

I think there would be a significant benefit to users if Dell PCs came with Google Pack pre-installed.

The software included (by default) with Google Pack is: Google Earth, Google Desktop (which is already included on Dell PCs), Picasa, Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer (also already included with Dell PCs), Google Pack Screensaver, Mozilla Firefox with Google Toolbar, Ad-Aware SE Personal, Norton AntiVirus (which I believe is also installed on all new Dell PCs, although I can't find a reference) and Adobe Reader. Google Talk, Google Video Player, RealPlayer, GalleryPlayer HD Images and Skype are optional.

Not only will the unified update system make it easier for users to update Google Desktop and the Google Toolbar for IE, which are already pre-installed on Dell PCs, it will provide other great software (such as Mozilla Firefox, which has already been suggested at this site by thousands of users) to improve the user experience. 5 Comments »

Have Opera pre-installed browser

Software submitted by envek 02/19/07

Opera is fast, standart compliant, free of charge (on desktops), lite, powerful and crossplatform web-browser.

It's a good choice to people, wants to have good soft without any customisation (or with little) and work with it. Easy and convenient.

Visit www.opera.com for more information (http://ru.opera.com/ and http://jp.opera.com/ for russian and japan official pages).

Yes, I want to have Opera as default browser. Are you? 47 Comments »
