Add some colors!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by bajtalan.hunor 02/24/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

In my opinion nowadays colors like gray or black are getting too old. Why Dell does not follow other companies like Sony or Apple or the tiny Flybook. People like colors because it expresses their personality, not everybody is a businessman or businesswoman, we like colors. For example white is getting more and more popular but there are other trendy colors out there.

So PLEASE ADD SOME COLOR TO YOUR NOTEBOOK AND DESKTOP LINES and make them look like jewelry and not like a piece of plastic, do some cool design.

We like to show a laptop to which people say WOW. So the "WOW STARTS NOW"!

The new Inspiron and XPS notebooks do come in colors now, but stay tuned for more ways to customize the look of your PC.

Alienware instead(or WITH) XPS

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by rab_stuberg 06/18/07

Since Dell purchased Alienware, they seem to have just "bought" the name and have not done anything to market this. Me and my co-worker had a discussion on how this seems sort of ....insane.
I think that Alienware has amazing concepts and should be marketed at either the kiosks, in-line stores, or just anyway possible.

With the current Area 51 M9750, the 1710 will have a SERIOUS run for the money.
Not only does it support SLI dual card set ups, two hard drives, INTEGRATED DVR/tuner, as well as sleek case/concept/design.
Either we at Dell are going to have to step up and revamp the 1710, or at least start "selling" the Alienware line to compete with this gaming laptop.
It would make more sense so we are not competing against ourselves in the gaming market....

I would think there should be either a solution to gaming page dedicated to the XPS and Alienware line. (on the DDS website)
Maybe start with two models, then branch out if it works out.
OR just off the XPS (I know its crazy sounding!) line and replace them with the Alienware line.
Its a far fetched idea, but something to think about..... 2 Comments »

Properly warn consumers about ~3GB Max useable RAM limit with Vista 32bit

Advertising and Marketing, Operating Systems submitted by benjesuit 06/18/07

Only Vista 64 bit can use 4GB of ram or higher. Vista 32bit (such as the recommended Home premium), like XP (32bit) will only report a max of ~3.1GB.

Therefore, it behoves Dell to properly warn consumers at time of configuration that they will not be using the sum total of their 4GB purchased if they choose any Vista edition that is 32bit.

Perhaps using red font parenthetical under the selection of 4GB instead of a footnote superscript.

*Vista Home premium is a 32bit operation system.

Dell change your CD/DVD's to SATA for cable reduction allowing better cooling.

Desktops, Servers and Storage submitted by jorge 06/19/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Dell change CD/DVD's on your Desktop and Server models (All) to SATA. Using SATA cables reduces any ventilation restrictions which can occur with IDE ribbon cables. SATA also reduces configuration issues for new computer users, reducing support calls.

REUSEABLE SHIPPING CONTAINERS

Environment submitted by scotty750 06/08/07

I'm an onsite tech. I've been griping for years about the large boxes for shipping parts for warranty calls that don't have handholds. And I just thought of a way to solve my gripe, make dell green and save money.

You can purchase hardened plastic laptop shipping cases that are lockable and pretty much infinitely reusable. Why not a similar solution for warranty parts.

Currently dell is using cardboard boxes. Lifespan of a box, 2 ships, out and back. if your lucky, maybe a second warranty call but not likely. cost of a box say 40 cents. number of boxes used a year??? well if we figure 30,000 systems built per day and a failure rate of say 10% (industry average is beleived to be about 15%) thats 3000 units a day that break.

Yes theres an upfront cost of purchasing the shipping cases, but they can get used an unlimited number of times. since they don't have to be constantly remade like cardboard, its a lower carbon footprint, and can lower to total cost over time from reuse. and it adds zero waste to landfill.

summary:
zero landfill
infinite reusability
lower carbon foottprint per unit over time
lower manufacturing costs over time
easy to implement
free advertising of dells commitment to green. make em a nice white with a nice big dell logo and a nice big recycle logo on it. every customer that gets a warranty repair would see the commitment to green 26 Comments »

Inspiron products submitted by alexlinebrink 06/19/07

We students need small laptops to carry around --- not huge ones that break our backs. PLEASE bring back the cheap Inspiron 640m and 1405 options!!! Also, we would love to see a decent priced 13.3" option. We don't need 4 different 15.4" options. 4 Comments »

Ubuntu Certified

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by safaci2000 06/19/07

Should dell, start certifying the vast majority of their laptops/towers as being Ubuntu compatible. Not necessarily pre-package Ubuntu on all laptops (though that'd be nice), but just like msft has their certified msft hardware, dell should test out each model they sell and either flag it as compatible or not with Ubuntu. (which odds are, would translate over to most other distributions anyways).

Make the dell ubuntu models available through the main webpage

Dell Web Site, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by rajeevbhatta 06/19/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Instead of having the model listings on a different webpage ( www.dell.com/open) have these models available from the product search you have on the main page or a link available through the main page (www.dell.com)

When I go to dell.com and I search for the product model numbers I never can find them I have to go to the other page and then I see it. The only thing I saw on the main page is a small flash ad which then takes you to the page.

Why cant you place these models with the other models on your page.........

SO OPENOFFICE IS NO OPEN SOURCE??!?

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by mistern 06/19/07

As seen on www.dell.com/open:

"The main thing to note is that when you choose open source you don’t get a Windows® operating system."

NOW THAT'S A BAD BAD LIE!

If I choose to use OpenOffice or Firefox or any other of the bazillions of wonderful Open Source applications that run on Windows, I still run Windows. So you are wrong and you are competent enough to know that, right? I hate liars!

Fix that.

(Please excuse the aggressive tone. This is a serious article, no joke.) 19 Comments »

Have option to opt out of Dell catalog to help save the environment

Advertising and Marketing submitted by improvedell 06/19/07

On the Dell catalog that is mailed every month by snail mail, have a phone number on the back cover, right next to the "Help Keep America Green" logo, so that customers can call to stop receiving the catalog. I'm sure that there are many customers like me that just throw the catalog away as soon as I get it. I know if I want something, I can find it easier on Dell.com. This would save Dell money on printing catalogs and postage and save many trees.

The phone number should be a dedicated automated line to take people off of the catalog mail list - enter customer number, press one to be removed from the mail list. 7 Comments »

Provide customer support for people who have been using computers for more than an hour.

Service and Support submitted by slap_shot_12 06/19/07

I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but hire some tech support people who are fluent in English, and then train them so they can actually offer some support.

Maybe you could even charge for it. I know I would be willing to pay for support that actually helps me beyond telling me to reinstall my drivers and then my OS. 7 Comments »

Dell and Geexbox

Advertising and Marketing, Operating Systems submitted by filibertord 06/19/07

Promote Geexbox and help with it's advancement and install it on PC's

Don't know what Geexbox is were you go,

GeeXboX is a free embedded Linux distribution which aims at turning your computer into a so called HTPC (Home Theater PC) or Media Center. Being a standalone LiveCD-based distribution, it's a ready to boot operating system than works on any Pentium-class x86 computer or PowerPC Macintosh, implying no software requirement. You can even use it on a diskless computer, the whole system being loaded in RAM. You can even dual boot it or install it as your mayn OS on your hard drive.

Dual Sided LCD with view protection software

Monitors and Displays, New Product Ideas submitted by c4smok 06/19/07

As a web developer I would love to have a laptop to where I could have a screen just for my client to view while I am showing him things I want him to see. Also doing this without showing all of the other things I am doing on the computer. Setting it up to where you can have your full desktop shown or just programs you would like the client to see would be amazing. I am sure people have thought of this before but I was looking for something like this for the past 5 years. A dual LCD setup would be the next generation for development for biz and web people. If Dell does not do this somebody else will, do not wait Dell…

Dual boot Windows and Linux

Operating Systems - Multiboot submitted by randomperson 06/19/07

Everytime I get a new laptop or desktop, I usually resize my partitions so I can dual boot windows and linux. Ubuntu is a great OS for people to start learning linux. This way you have the best of both worlds. Users would not have to worry about their software being compatible with their OS. I do not know any other company that offers this and would make Dell stand out as doing something different. 6 Comments »

The Option to Preinstall Alternative Browsers

Software submitted by gossymer 06/20/07

When it comes to browsers, people are beginning to understand that there is a choice beyond Internet Explorer. Provide them with that choice when they buy their computer.

Let them choose if they want to install Firefox, Opera, Netscape, Safari (for PC) etc.

The reason I mention several alternative browsers is because, it really depends on the country.

America likes Firefox as an alternative while Europe seems to be just as interested in Opera. Then there is Safari for PCs which is making some waves- might be worth it to provide an option for it once the final version is released.

When it comes to tech news, browsers are making a lot of noise. This is an easy way for Dell to use that to its advantage.

NOTE: This is not more bloatware! The buyer decides if they want an alternative browser. Otherwise nothing extra is installed. 10 Comments »

Sell Ubuntu Systems to Businesses

Linux, Sales Strategies, Small Business submitted by defrex 06/20/07

Recently Dell refused to sell their Ubuntu PCs to a small non-profit business. Please do sell them in future, letting the market for the Ubuntu PCs expand however it chooses.
