Computer Should be Free if it Doesn't Arrive on Time

Service and Support submitted by badblood 09/05/07

When Dell specify a shipping date for a product and when (if?) it doesn't arrive on time the computer or other product should be free. 27 Comments »

Eco Labels

Environment submitted by jak 09/05/07

Hi

Can you (Dell) design your Desktops and Notebooks after the guidelines of the most common eco labels?
I think of eco labels like the blue angel (in germany), the european eco label (the euro flower), the TCO (for PCs and Displays), the Energy Star, the Swanian and so on.
This would be great.

Goodbye Jak

Make the Precision work stations better looking.

Precision Workstations submitted by jervis961 09/04/07

I like the specs on the new Precision 6300 but it looks like a
darker grey version of my Inspiron 6000. Why hasn't Dell tried to make
the thing better looking? The least they could have done is put it in a
Latitude case.

Dell Stop Taking Orders on Systems You Cannot Deliver

Service and Support submitted by jorge 08/21/07

Dell Stop Taking Orders on systems you cannot deliver. The mudd pie is getting really bad, now IT sites are alerting their readers you can't process an order in a timely fashion. You need to disable those Order Buttons till you can actually make them.

Here's the referring Mudd Pie: http://tinyurl.com/2fdgzm

Easy access to fans for cleaning on laptops

Laptops submitted by celticgibson 04/22/07

As we all know, the inspiron laptops get hot once dust builds up on the CPU/GPU grills and it's impossible to clean them without having to resort to taking the latop apart. It would be awesome if you could put blank plates on the bottom of the laptop, where the fans take in air, to allow for easy access for removal of fans and hence the cleaning of the grills. This would save many a problem with overheating hardware and endless tech support problems. 17 Comments »

No Extra Software Option

Software submitted by ootleman 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Would love the ability to have a clean Vista install. No AOL software, no earthlink software, no google software - just a clean, original OS.

Ditch Windows

Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by crawfjs 02/22/07

Dell needs to free themselves from the Windows stronghold. Focus on designing a solid system (like Apple has done) and offer a system without Windows.

Also, this website, the javascript that is used is not supported in IE7!! Way to go. Haven't tried it in firefox, but way to be :P 84 Comments »

There should be an option of having no trialware on all computers

Software submitted by jervis961 08/23/07 **REVIEWED**

Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?

"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"

Dell offers a broad amount of software choice and minimal software shipped. Read jeremy_f's post on the options we give our customers

More detailed hardware specs when building a computer

Service and Support, Desktops and Laptops submitted by bbr 08/24/07

Like a number of other users, i like to mix and match a system, but with the ease of a system put together by dell.

Show per component what the detailed specs are.
So we know what we're getting, perhaps there are equal quality components, for a lower price available, perhaps users want different hardware.

I could see this being difficult however, since you could go to a hardware store, buy 1500 Euros worth in loose components and end up with a computer equal to a 2000 euro dell system. More detailed component specs however will never hurt anyone though.
what's the refresh time of the monitor, size and manufacturer of the HD, buffer, ram size, bus speed, clock speed of the video card. etc.

Sales Strategies submitted by raviagarwala 08/26/07

Its time your Company got your computer honchos together to create a system wherein only barebone pcs will be required to be bought by customers....all the software and storage available for online access...this will be a source for ongoing revenue collection by the Computer Company since the customers would pay a monthly/annual fee for this service. Simultaneouly, the pcs themselves become cheaper, lighter and more easily accessible by a greater number of people in every household ...target US $100..
Cool name for this new pc = BRASSTACKS

"Powder coated paint jobs"

Laptops submitted by ptcase 08/26/07

Dell,
Please add an option to have laptop powder coated. I don't know how much of an increase that would be for the consumer. But I think it would add to the durability and scratch-resistance of the surface. 5 Comments »

LEMON

Service and Support submitted by jdrasor 08/27/07

How about shifting customer care from India to America so we can actually resolve some issues. How about making good on all the defective mother boardsyou have sold. did you know the average hold time for customer care is 1hr 26 min and when i called i got a rep in India and they kept transfeering me around to the wrong departments until i got frustrated and gave up. But i think you count on this so people wont call at all and then you dont have to honor any warranties . In my case i bought an xps 400 and it was delivered unusable. After 3 weeks of trying to get help on the phone they finally got it to work. Since then its been nothing but problems. Shuts itself down , get floppy disk errors and i dont have a floppy disk. it doesnt even recognize the dvd\cd so i have never been able to use it.when i spend twelve hundred dollars on a pc i expect it to last longer than 1.5 years. but try and get in touch with someone about this and its nothing but a run around.
THANKS DELL

Ideastorm's problems reflect, mirror, and illustrate the larger problems with Dell.

IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz 08/28/07

It's funny (or rather sad), how IdeaStorm's problems so closely reflect the problems that seem so deeply ingrained into Dell's corporate culture that the exact same problems show up everywhere in the organization.

Dell seems to have a very well earned reputation of not listening to customers - or listening to any external feedback. In Dell's computer business we see this from the decades where customers wanted AMD but Dell stayed loyal to Intel instead. In Dell's customer support we see this from the absolutely scary customer support transcripts posted on the internet. On IdeaStorm we see Dell completely ignoring some of the 3 top-voted Ideas (like No OS - which, if I recall was in the 3 top-voted ideas since february) without even a single comment about Dell's official position.

Dell seems to have a very well earned reputation of not communicating externally. In Dell's finance group we see this where they can't communicate to the SEC. On IdeaStorm we see this where dozens of unpaid volunteers participate more here than any official spokespeople from Dell - despite Dell presumably paying people to communicate through channels like this.

Dell seems to have a very well earned reputation of doing a very halfway job [sorry for the implied profanity - but it's absolutely the best term]. In Dell's computer business we see this by the small incremntal battery recalls that kept having to be ever expanded as they burned down more and more houses, desks, and cars (even this month). On IdeaStorm we see this how Dell's quick to label Ideas "Completed" or "Already Offered" when they only offer the fix on a small number of obsolete models in small geographical areas.

Ideas:

1. Fix Dell's corporate culture, and maybe some of it'll rub off on IdeaStorm and make IdeaStorm a better place.

2. Fix IdeaStorm, and maybe some of it'll rub off on Dell's corporate culture and make Dell a better place. 6 Comments »
