Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.
I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

Streamline the MS tax refund
Sales Strategies submitted by polarwolf

This one is a short and easy one...if Dell doesn't want or can't offer OS-less consumer PCs or laptops, at least make it easier for customers to claim the refund they're intitled to in the Microsoft EULA if they don't accept the terms of the license.

Post WinMark/PCMark/3DMark or other performance scores in product details and ads with comparison to your competition.
Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by benjesuit
08/05/07
Dell more often than not, has higher WinMark/PCMark scores than their competitors. Seeing as you sell products through the direct marketing method (i.e. without being able to feel or touch) you need as many incentives as you can to entice buyers.
And your styling really isn't up to par with competitors like HP.
But imagine if your ads and product info pages on your website had performance vitals? (PCmark 05-06, 3D Mark 05-06, Wprime, Vista Score-full panel.) It would probably justify the price premium that you usually have over the competition. Or feature lack.
Most people don't read third party reviews when making a purchasing decision. The more comparitive info you provide, the more seemingly educated the consumer feels in general.

Downloadable, PDF format, full technical specs for all systems
Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site submitted by benjesuit
06/12/07 **REVIEWED**
Before I buy, I would like to have the options of downloading the full technical specifications of the system. Not just the brief specifications. Place a link under "tech specs" tab that allows you to view or download the full specification PDF file for those of us who care about and understand such things. This way everyone is satisfied. We are looking to improve the specs pages by making them consistent across all product lines, provide more in-depth specifications and making them available in a printable format.

Visible Link to IdeaStorm on main Dell site
Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by ipaw
07/01/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
IdeaStorm should have a visible link and explanation on the main Dell site as well as a Desktop shortcut on all new installations.
I've been a Dell customer since my XPS-500 back in the mid 90's and I only just found out about IdeaStorm through a PodCast.
If people know they can have a voice and make a difference, they'll use it.
Thanks
This idea has been partially implemented, as our new home page now has a prominent link to "Dell Community" - within that page are links to IdeaStorm and our other community properties, including Dell Community Forums, Direct2Dell, StudioDell, etc. Thanks for the idea!!!

Better laptop touch pad idea, plus additional controls
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by theblackcat
02/17/07
Many other laptop brands are way ahead of dell in terms of the controls available on their laptops, especially the Latitude line. Things like a basic touch pad and control knob are present, as are basic volume controls. However, other brands have touch-sensitive horizontal, vertical, and volume scroll strips, as well as various other controls. And the latitude brand is missing even basic media controls (which can also be useful for presentations, especially if combined with quick access or sideshow functionality).
The fact is there is a lot of wasted space on a laptop that could use additional buttons.
I think Logitech had the best idea. They just came out with a new keyboard called the diNovo Edge that has features that would be great in a laptop. Primarily, instead of the normal rectangular touch pad it has a circular one. If you put your finger on the right edge and move it in a circle around the edge in either direction it scrolls vertically in that direction, while if you put your finger on the bottom and move it in a circle it scrolls horizontally. You can move your finger in a circle very quickly for very rapid but still precise scrolling.
A large circular touch pad like this, with the left and right click buttons near the bottom left edge of the pad and bottom right edge of the pad (respectively), would be ideal for a laptop. For the latitude, which also has the control knob, the second pair of right and left mouse buttons could be near the top right and top left edge of the pad. Double-tapping an edge of the circle and then moving your finger a little way around the edge could be used as a quick-scroll. Otherwise it would work as an ordinary touch-pad. However its circular shape would give a place to put the buttons and thus the pad could be made larger.
There could also be a vertical touch-sensitive bar for controlling zooming just to the left and another one just to the right for volume, with a small 100% zoom and mute button just below or above each. Alternatively, have horizontal ones just below the keyboard, one on the right and the other on the left. A third option would be to have a single volume button and a second zoom button, and if you touch that with one hand you can then use the edge of the scroll pad to control each while a tap in the middle of the pad would set the zoom back to zero or mute/unmute the volume. The latter option would be more efficient and preferable in my opinion, but probably less intuitive for everyday users (it could easily be an option, though, or a simple setting could be changed in software).
Finally, have buttons for play/pause, stop, forward, back, shuffle, a volume rocker button, etc on the front edge of the laptop so they can be used when closed. Additional buttons, quick-launch, playlist, etc could be placed above the keyboard like normal. This would make great use of space without interfering with the space for the hand rests, and most commonly-used features would be within easy reach whether using the keyboard or the touch pad.

1) Keep laptops running cool and quiet: Keep using (or improve upon) the dual heat pipe cooling design like in the XPS m1710. Pluses include being able to draw air in from the sides as well as the bottom.
2) LCDs with LED backlight (conserves more power; brighter displays)
3) 200GB 7200 RPM hard drives when they come out: Higher capacity in one drive means consumer will not need two in laptop, which means less heat. http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/01/hitachi-to-offer-auto-encrypting-hybrid-no...
4) eSATA ports: For connecting more hard drives if needed
5) External PCI-E: For external graphics card solution http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=6028 Please use the x16 width for better performance
6) Actual output for 5.1 audio: Add a second jack for output.
7) For integrated audio, use SoundBlaster Live! or X-Fi.
8) If the thickness and weight of the laptop is not affected too much, put an OLED screen on the lid of laptop (you can see it when laptop is closed) and I mean practically the whole lid, almost the size of the laptop's main screen. This can be used to customize the look of the laptop (like some sort of skin or wallpaper) or display useful information when laptop is closed (Windows SideShow?)

The XPS1510 - 15" Laptop with 512MB Video Card
Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by greygabe
02/21/07
I know this may be a bit specific, but here are some ideas for a new XPS laptop. The XPS1710, kind of the cousin of the 1705, can be a bit heavy and unruley - so why not make a brother for the 1505, the XPS1510. A 15" laptop with the prized 512MB NVidea would appeal to many customers. It can be done. as ASUS and SAGER have already proven. The following list is more specific:
Core 2 Duo processors (similar selection to XPS1710) Vista Sideshow monitor (as close to the ASUS at CES as possible) Memory card reader microphone built-in wi-fi search function of the XPS1210 avalible 4GB of ram At least 3 hours battery life 2 Headphone jacks (a very nice cheap feature) hard button volume buttons (don't move to sliders like some companies) hard switch for muting (can mute it before boot) hard switch for wi-fi Avalible LightScribe burner 7200 RPM hard drive Battery meter on battery independant of computer RESONABLE PRICE (every time Dell makes a computer they love the price is crazy, like the XPS 2010)
I know all of this is possible considering most the things are things that have already been done in Dell computers or others. The XPS1210 is an amazing size, but a lot of people would like to see a 15" with 512MB video.

I've been wanting a UMPC since I heard about them, but I can't find any that has what I want and with the power to back it up, Dell could definitely pull it off... and here is what I'm looking for in a Dell UMPC:
*The usually Dell customizability *Microsoft Windows Vista (any version that supports tablet) *Core Solo/Duo/2 Duo+ Processor *1Gig+ Memory *60Gig+ Hard Drive (ReadyDrive would be nice) *Touchscreen/Bluetooth 2.0/Wireless 802.11N/GPS *Optional Cellphone Internet Service (already available on their laptops) *2-3+MP Camera/Video *NVIDIA Video Card (very important - would be first) *DVI or HDMI Connections *7.1 HD Audio Out *Card Reader/USB (at least 2-4 ports) *Windows SideShow Support from Dell
Blow the competition out of the water!

Consumer version of the XO
Laptops submitted by jebuswankel
02/19/07
Create a laptop similar to the XO, the laptop designed for kids in developing nations as part of the OPLC project. Make it super lightweight and give it extra long battery life. Give it the capabilities of a PDA but with a full keyboard and a traditional laptop form factor. Don't put Vista on it. Put on Linux, Windows Mobile 6, or anything else lightweight. Make it sync with full power systems or make it a SideShow device. Make it low-cost. Put in Wi-Fi and a SSD but skip the optical drive.

For the hardcore-gamers, I would like a XPS notebook with a BLU-RAY and HD-DVD reader/writer, with (color) Sideshow, an Intel quadcore processor and a Nvidia 8800 styled GPU (I mean compatible with Diretx10)... I would like also some light like the Dell XPS M1710... I know that these specs are not possible now, but I would like them as fast as DELL these specs can build in in antoher SPECTACULAR XPS hope all gamers find it good what I think...

Corporate notebooks should have a "Quick Access" feature
Laptops submitted by annec
01/30/07
Dell's consumer notebooks have the ability to "quick access" contacts, calendar and presentation information without going through a full boot cycle through its MediaDirect technology. Business users need that kind of quick access as well. Will Dell consider adding this feature to it's business notebooks?
