Advertise Ubuntu a little more loudly

Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by zhinker 05/16/07 **NOT NOW**

I may be wrong about this but it doesn't seem to me like Dell's done any sort of advertising at all for the new Ubuntu pc's that it'll be rolling out soon, except for it's initial declaration I haven't heard a word about on any non-linux media (everyone using linux knows about it of course).

Unless Dell is planning on marketing this solely to linux users, it might want to let the rest of the world know that it's going to be selling Ubuntu soon (a simple photo and note on their website would be enough to make a bunch of pc buyers at least interested, and the ad wouldn't even cost anything). The problem with going after only current linux users is that you're substantially lowering your market base (which of course, is already pretty low--I realize this is just an experiment) to people who might already have pc's their perfectly happy with for the next couple of years, and I'm also worried that this perceived lack of interest might give Dell, and hence other pc manufacturers, the idea that selling linux computers is still a failing enterprise.

That's my 2 cents 36 Comments »

Extend offers like Linux pre-installation to the UK & Europe

Dell, Linux submitted by leftcase 05/03/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

First of all - well done Dell for listening to the people and making some brave decisions about the operating systems you provide your computers with.

Supplying pre-installed Linux (and XP instead of Vista for that matter) goes a good way towards giving customers what they want.

One thing that is slightly irritating however is that none of these offers are available outside of the US. Browsing through peoples comments, blogs and the Dell forums reveals that many people from the UK (for example), want the opportunity to get pre-installed Linux on their new Dell PCs.

The UK and Europe marketplace is not insignificant, and many people feel that you should extend your offer to this market too.

Please see Ideas In Action for additional information. Ubuntu Linux in other countries is coming soon.

Pre-Install Linux / Contract Out Paid Support Options

Linux, Service and Support submitted by i22yb 03/04/07

As many others have posted, give an option for having Linux pre-installed - be it Ubuntu, openSUSE, etc. Then, Dell should sign a support deal with the respective linux distro maker (Canonical, Novell, etc.) where Dell would get a small cut of the paid support fee and the distro maker would handle all of the linux support for Dell.

#1 - Customer gets more control over what goes on their computer.

#2 - Customer gets most knowledgeable support they can without dealing with scripted help lines.

#3 - Dell creates a new revenue stream for themselves.

#4 - Dell doesn't have to absorb the extra support costs regarding linux and can roll out systems with linux options much faster.

#5 - The linux distros get an additional revenue stream that helps them furthur improve desktop linux for the end user.

End result... EVERYBODY WINS!!! Comment »

Creating a Linux based subsidiary

Linux submitted by burtoni 03/02/07

Instead of trying to incorporate linux based systems into the regular Dell product stream what about creating a susidiary company that would be focussed on the Linux based home PC market. Give the subsidary it's own mandate and get it to come up with a 5-year plan. This needs to start out small, just like Dell did many years ago. A few systems with a single distribution to start, one that has it's own support structure (Ubuntu comes to mind). This start-up could develop it's own model for support and distribution but have the benefit of being able to access Dell's marketing channels and production capability. After 5 years the success of the start-up could be evaluated and the decision made to continue as an independent subsidiary, brought back into the Dell corporate fold or closed down. The key would be to give it the 5 years to show if Linux based PC's for the home is a viable market. 1 Comment »

Provide Linux Drivers and Support

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Service and Support submitted by thomcmanus 03/02/07

More important than preloading Linux, if Dell provides open source drivers for Linux that would help a lot of users and corporations look to Dell for Linux / Open source solutions.

Some countries such as China, Venezuela, Peru, Germany are moving to Linux, if Dell doesn't provide Linux support IBM will. It's that clear.

Thank you for putting up this great website.

Making Linux Viable

Linux submitted by dimplewidget 03/02/07

It has been submitted that you offer Linux as an alternative to the Windows or Vista OS's. Between the loss of certain incentives as advertising from preinstalled application demos & cost increases from additional support demands, the idea may seem far from practical. But that isn't exactly true.

It is possible to ELIMINATE Tech support with regards to linux as you provide specification for drivers and the linux community itself will build drivers. Store front the distributions to sell with the hardware then refer all support to the software vendor. When purchasing a linux distribution from a commercial vender be aware that the money that is charged is for a limited time of technical support and not the software itself.

Linux comes with an option that Windows doesn't that can allow you to keep advertising dollars, the LiveCD/DVD. A liveCD/DVD boots and runs the operating system from the removable media itself a single bootable DVD can hold as much adware as any installed system can. There are commercial Linux applications that can be bundled and demonstrated simply by booting from the supplied CD/DVD Media. Also many emulators for windows exist allowing for continuing subsidies from existing sources.

When approached from the traditional business practices the offering of linux as an alternative shipping option would be inviable. However, tradition in this case is synonymous with too lazy to think.

In closing I would like to note that the MANDATORY disclaimer at the bottom of the web page may absolve you of any compensatory demands. It would be good form that if you do find my "innovation" to your liking that you send me a token maybe a laptop or a LCD monitor or something. Comment »

Give us linux

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by darkk-desires 03/02/07

I have an older Dell, as well as a custom build pc of my own. I would have went with Dell again rather than building my own but you don't offer the linux option. We are not all drones that follow the mindless army to use the main OS that so many have. We love our linux and the many advantages it gives us.You need to cater to the educated user of linux also, we live!! Comment »

Create a device division and use Lnux to drive it

Linux submitted by masinick 03/02/07

Try creating a device division. Apple has had great success with their iPod and iPod Nano. Creating anything there would probably be a loss since they have the market cornered, but at least to be in it, you could create a very inexpensive and very good looking music device, phone, pager, or maybe all of the above and come up with your own color scheme, logos, and marketing blitz. Use Linux underneath, running embedded Linux on the small stuff.

Use Linux as a common layer so you can have communication protocols throughout your family of devices, and at the high end, tie them all in to some Dell service and servers, which generate revenue. Make those Dell servers run Linux with Open Source databases, middleware, and other components. Invest engineering into it and give it back to the community and immerse yourself in the middle of an emerging industry.

Put Linux on the desktop in the middle, and have it seamlessly fit into the rest of this. Put it all together as a cohesive product line and you might be able to come up with something that noone else has. Red Hat has the enterprise services area pretty well tied up, and that is where traditional revenue sources have come from. But I think if you get smart and get comprehensive about this, and hook it all into the notion of the Web and a common OS layer and common communication, common look and feel, common appearance, etc. you may be able to get mileage out of it that nobody else has been able to build or leverage to date. IF you don't at least try, you will definitely not make it and you will miss several emerging markets. They may not turn out exactly as I have described, but I think that kind of thinking is on the right path. Pursue it agressively, this is the time to do it. 1 Comment »

Pushing other constructor to make driver for linux

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux submitted by sybesis 03/02/07

I don't know if dell would have a great impact on hardware constructor, But it would be fun to see dell in cooperation with open source project. By using his name and to make sure every hardware spec is linux compatible too.

I actually have a inspiron 9400 using fedora core 6 but i cannot find any driver for multi flash drive sd Xd.....

So it would be fun to see dell pushing constructor to develop drivers for their computers or just to encourage to distribute specification of the hardware so open source developper will be able to start a project and then create working drivers without too much time. Dell could actually create projects on these drivers to make things move.

I believe it is possible as windows seemed to have forced everyone to use it as primary os. Making linux drivers is a piece of cake compared to this.
(having working driver with all spec would let everyone being able to buy any computer from dell ) Comment »

Like Mel Gibson would have said it....

Linux submitted by ekerim 03/03/07

..."Freeeeeeeddddooooooooommm!!!!!!", THAT is what we want...THAT is what Linux is all about. Freedom of choice, Freedom from a license we can not agree with and lastly Freedom of cost (no corporate lock-ins and no more corporate prices!).

The news has been buzzing, first about pre-installation of certain distributions and then suddenly a careful "certification" of a certain Microsoft partner.

Too much time is spent on which distribution or which office productivity suite to choose for us (Freedom issue for me). Linux is not a distribution it is a KERNEL!!!, that is where the goodies go and that is where the HW support is located. Novell, Red Hat and Ubuntu doesn't say what goes into the kernel or not, Linus and his guys do. Sure they help and submit huge amount of code to the kernel but that does not make their distributions "Linux" with an exclamation mark.

The point I'm trying to make is...Certification is good enough for me, in some ways better then pre-loading, but not if it is against a certain distribution. Certify against the stable kernel without vendor specific patches. Sure, use SUSE if it makes you sleep well at night, but make sure the >> kernel flavor is vanilla <<.

Lots of posts in this forum has it right (according to me a least :) "Linux 2.6 Inside" or "Kernel 2.6 certified" is what we need, NOT an other vendor lock-in with a "Novell SUSE certified" or "Microsoft Approved Linux".

Oh well...good luck

Rgds

No Linux? OK.... Linux-fan: don't buy Dell computers

Linux submitted by lonelovetenerife 03/03/07

Dell's Ideastorm was "stormed" with posts asking Linux incorporated as operating system in the computers. Now Dell make only shy measures like selling PCs without O.S.

Well, if Dell don't take care of consumer's wishes there is an easy solution: if you are a fan of open source don't buy Dell products until it comes with Linux. 10 Comments »
