Enable us to change an existing idea vote, if we make a mistake

IdeaStorm submitted by cosh 05/01/07

A few times I've accidentally clicked on the wrong button, or voted after reading the title of an idea but wanted to change it once I read the whole thing. Could you make it so we can still click the promote button after demoting or the demote button after promoting?

Better than having inaccurate vote counts because of clumsy people like me!

Thanks! 131 Comments »

The environmental impact of CD is worse than I thought - make including CDs / DVDs optional.

Environment submitted by jmxz 08/23/07

http://www.treehugger.com/files/2007/08/why_we_love_dow.php

every month in the United States some 100,000 pounds of CDs become outdated, useless or unwanted. Every year, more than 5.5 million software packages go to landfills and incinerators. He notes studies that calculate that a kilogram of greenhouse gases are generated for each CD produced, packaged and delivered.

In the software biz, every $100,000 spent on commercial software reproduction creates the global warming potential of approximately 29 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents as well as 38 kilograms of toxic waste. We would add that most of the software on CD's is obsolete and in need of updates as soon as it hits the shelves.

I have never ever ever used any of the CDs and disks that Dell sent me every time I bought a Dell computer - and I expect for 90%+ of Dell customers that's true as well.

Make it an option - so only people who really will use the discs get them.

[EDIT: - an improvement to the idea came out of the comments below. How about pre-load the .iso image on the computer and document that if you want the images you should burn them yourselves?] 9 Comments »

IdeaStorm, hide the Idea posters name and voting individual listings.

IdeaStorm submitted by jorge 08/23/07

IdeaStorm, hide the Idea posters name and voting individual listings.

Much like a true democracy who voted one way or another is not listed out like it is on IdeaStorm, hide the names at the bottom indicating who voted which way.

Also, hide the Idea posters name unless they wish to be identified this will allow for true voting on an Idea vs the popularity vote of a person or regime.

Leave the count displayed like it is now, much like on election day its nice to see how a vote is going. Don't forget to leave the count of motes vs demotes, or actually add it.

Of course this means the Dashboard must also conceal the Idea's owner. 10 Comments »

Don't totally disable editing ideas.

IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz 08/23/07

In some comment somewhere dell_admin1 suggested that editing of ideas would be disabled.

While I understand something is needed to prevent vandalism, editing of Ideas is very useful. In particular, soon after an idea is posted there are frequently questions in the comments and related ideas that are discussed that refine the Ideas in a very positive way.

There are a number of Ideas where I voted against them -- and in the comments explained why I voted against them -- and as a result the submitter edited-and-refined the Idea to make what was a problematic idea into a very positive one. The "include software disks" is one example - I think it's a great optional idea - but horrible for the environment if it's done by default(as the idea was originally posted where it said "always include").

By disallowing editing Ideas you would lose the benefits of having the community refine ideas and turning them from Good Ideas into Great Ideas.

Better solutions -- any one of:

  • Disable editing only after, say, 30-days after an Idea is posted.
  • Allow editing - but make Editing clear the vote scores for an Idea.
  • Allow editing as you do now - I only saw 1 instance of abuse of this feature and many instances of productive use of it.

[EDIT - As pointed out in the comments - there's another good solution -
  • Still allow edits but the edits need to be approved by moderators (dell_admins? trusted users?) before going into effect
Also, as pointed out in the comments - good thing I can still edit the Idea to get this good additional solution on the table.]

OpenBIOS/LinuxBIOS Machines, Laptops in particular

Linux, Laptops submitted by smoe 08/23/07

It would of course be brilliant if Dell would offer such directly. To support the respective developers though would already be sufficiently fantastic.

We might have Laptops that even when they are not shut down are back running in a few seconds. 2 Comments »

Offer the 1 kilowatt powersupply on ALL XPS desktops

Dell, Desktops, XPS products submitted by maverick4ever 08/23/07

Why is Dell still offering the 750 watt power supply on the XPS line? If one decides to have a pair of high end GPU's in his PC, he will need a bigger PSU. I think it's so stupid how Dell continuously ''discriminates'' the black XPS desktop line. They are always the last to get new parts options and in some cases don't get them at all.

Above all Dell should listen to the many requests made by ideastorm users to give customers the option to view a list of EVERY SINGLE IMAGINABLE component available to the PC they are looking at. 6 Comments »

Add monitors & peripherals to dell.com/open - (or add Ubuntu computer to the website where you sell peripherals)

Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by jmxz 08/23/07

I just bought a new monitor today - and though I like Dell monitors (2 of the monitors in this room are Dell monitors) unfortunately I did not get a Dell this time. Why not? Two reasons.

  1. You segregate Open Source compatible technologies of in a "dell.com/open" part of your web site - and one of the reasons I've heard is because you have compatibility concerns between Linux and the stuff you sell in the rest of your web site. At least people from Dell have suggested that's true of computers - so I can only assume it's true of monitors instead. If you do have monitors that work with Linux -- put them in the same section as your Linux computers. Either put them in the dell.com/open part - or better - put your Linux computers in the same part of the web site that you currently have your monitors and the rest of your products
  2. You segregate Open Source compatible technologies of in a "dell.com/open" part of your web site - and one statistic I hear being tossed around is what percentage of your sales come from the "www.dell.com/open" part. The last thing I'd want is my purchases to be used by some microsoft negotiator saying "look, only 60% of jmxz's sales came from /open - he must like Windows too" (or more realistically "only X% of dell's sales come from /open"). For this reason I don't feel good about buying from the other half of your web site; and am half tempted to encourage my workplace to avoid products from dell.com/non-open as well.

So the Ideas:

If you really want to maintain 2 totally separate areas on your site - one for open, one for non-open - add a bunch of your peripherals there so I can feel good about ordering them without my dollars being counted in statistics against your Linux efforts.

Or, better, stop having 2 totally separate areas on your site, and put the Ubuntu computers next to the monitors that no doubt do actually work with them (though I won't get the chance to find out myself).

Dell - please stay focused on the highest-voted ideas, though. Don't distract yourselves with this one until you've addressed the ideas below which have been the top-ranked ideas for many months without adequate responses..

  1. 147,808 - dhart - Pre-Installed Linux [and not just on a couple obsolete models in limited geographies]
  2. 127,719 - dhart - Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office
  3. 107,313 - robinjfisher - Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser
  4. 89,183 - ootleman - No Extra Software Option [only a couple models are crapware-free today]
  5. 78,007 - gergnz - Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware
  6. 73,600 - agreer - No OS Preloaded [and not just on a couple obsolete models]

Add 12-cell battery option to ALL notebooks

Laptop Power submitted by nicopoon 08/23/07

12-cell batteries are now mainstream with many vendors, but not at Dell. Why? See HP: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12152_na/12152_na.html

Having 2 of these batteries would greatly improve mobility. Please vote and support :) 5 Comments »

Make the XPS line the "Mac" crushers

XPS products, Laptops submitted by nicopoon 08/23/07

After all this time I am still amazed that Dell has not been able to offer good hardware options like Apple has been offering for so long, now.

Examples:
- thin & elegant design from small to large size notebook. See the Macbook Pro 17 inch vs. the Dell XPS 1710 (or the rumored frankenstein 1730)
- backlit display and keyboards
- high quality keyboard and speakers
- display axle that folds the screen down as you open it, which saves valuable space when seating on an airplane

That, plus 12-cell batteries that HP offers, or 64SSD drive options that Toshiba has too. Dell has the opportunity to offer it all and make amazing premium notebooks. But, it's not done it in all these years.

Offer Installments services with more banks(not only one)

Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by laujie 08/24/07

I'm great to see DELL have an affair can let custmour to pay DELL-PC by installments In China. But I think It isn't OK. Cause that most citizens of China have PC ,and they will not buy PC in soon.IN fect, The biggest exchange is people of Chinese countries(The rural population is more than Citizen of China) ,most of them don't have PC , and most of them don't have enough money to buy a very-good-PC(have enough money to buy a usual pc only,If they want to buy a very good PC).SO I think installment payments is a best way to solve this problem for them,BUT DELL Company only Offer this service with China Merchants Bank is NOT OK. Bucause that most countries of China don't have China Merchants Bank.

So, if a person want to buy a DELL-PC(and If the pc is too expensive that <him> can't defray in One-time,so he will choose to pay money in many times to buy the DELL-PC,but he can't find the China Merchants Bank(Bucause that most countries of China don't have China Merchants Bank),and it's to troublesome to do it. He must leave home and take a Bus for a long-time to get the China Merchants Bank of his hometown. It's too troublesome, isn't it? so he will change his mind to buy pc of other-brands PC ,such as Lenovo Or HP.

So I think DELL should be offer this service With some others Banks, such as "Agricultural Bank of China, The postal savings bank of China Or the others". Because you can find Agricultural Bank of China, The postal savings bank of China everywhere. SO it's Convenient for Customers. Comment »

Take care with the market of developing countries

Advertising and Marketing submitted by laujie 08/24/07

In the developing country (such as china and india) the system for trade on the network isn't perfect, many people was cheated,so
many people don't like to buy the goods with network, and that when a computer was selled dell company must get money frist, then
sends the computer to the customer. It will let many people don't believe it,and they think that it was a pitfall. So I hope DELL company
can do that"sends the computer frist then get the many or the customer can pay by installments for the PC"to let the customer believe
it isn't a pitfall. And DELL isn't a wellknow brand in China. Now you may ask me why,and you'll don't believe it,won't you? But, I must
tell you that is true in China, many of chinese don't know DELL.Because that many Chinese touch the PC in the internet cafes in the
frist time(the PC have no brand,DIY by the boss). When they want to buy PC with a famous Brand, they'll watch TV to find a famous
Brand isn't throught the Newspapers and magazines.Because People think that only some famous companies can have advertisements
on CCTV(include some famous Televisions) ,only some bad companies(isn't famous and the company want to cheat the persons'
money)have advertisements with newspapers, magazines and websites.
We can see "Free Upgrade" in the advertisement of DELL,It's good for customers, but most chinese think that should be a fraud,so
change the word "Free Upgrade" into "Discount" ,I think it's better.
Most pc of Dell were selled by the network, so the website should be designed well.In fect, the webpage of DELL China isn't
good,The webpage of US is better only.I think Apple and SONY are good at it(The webpage of APPLE -China & SONY-China are the
examples),So DELL Company Must be do it well.
Today the products of DELL are colorful, but the products' skin don't have many styles(skin of INSPIRON are the same),such as
INSPIRON 1420,1520&1720, the face are the same, not creative, only the color are different.
Expect that ,DELL NOTEBOOK PC don't have enought SIZEs for Customer to choese, such as INSPIRON don't have the size which are
12.1 , 13.3 Inch. XPS also don't have enought SIZEs for customer to choese,IT don't have the SIZEs ,such as 14.1& 15.4. Comment »

High(er) spec Ubuntu laptops for UK/France/Germany

Inspiron products, Linux, Laptops submitted by jarocooke 08/24/07

I am literally sitting here willing to buy a Dell Ubuntu the second it is available, however there are a few things that it must have:

1. FSB of 667Mhz (at least)
2. A Core 2 Duo processor
3. A 1440x900 display

These things are all available options on the US 1420N model and were they available in the UK I would already have bought one. Please offer a higher spec laptop with Ubuntu installed as soon as possible. 4 Comments »

You have to be inventive and innovative!

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by grinser 08/24/07

What I miss from Dell is innovation and new inventions!
You don't get new product ideas until others are long ahead!

For example, who was the major one developing the new Windows Home Server boxes with Microsoft? Not dell, it was HP! Why wasn't it dell?

Another example: Tablet PC - where was dell when the first Tablets where introduced? Why do we only get a dell more than a "decade" later? You could do so much with and for this formfactor - build a designer centric tablet with high resolution display (at least 1440x900) and high quality inking capabilities (wacom technology) - look at other ideas to get a thought.

Where is a Dell UMPC? Plenty room for innovation here!

Where is the Dell All In One PC that successfully competes with Apple iMac in looks, functionality and price?

Where is a Dell Touchscreen PC like HP has? Do you want to stay behind until Apple introduces something similar to the iPhone but in computer formfactor?

Where is good advertising in europe? Why don't you make Dell attractive to students like in America? Students are potential customers for the future! Take a look at the Apple on Campus program and advertising! You might get it right in the usa, but NOT in europe! I want to be informed about your student discounts (through advertising (on website, on campus, ...), etc.) instead of having to ask myself via chat or hotline if you kindly give discounts!

Why can we only pay with credit cards in some european countries? For some people, credit card payments on the internet are still a show-stopper! (because they have non or of security concerns!)

I like your product designs, but you could do it much better! A product similar to the macbook pro would bring you many customers if perfectly marketed!

Why is your website so cluttered? At least on the german page there are often suddenly english texts and images. Images aren't correctly fitted, design is cluttered. Maybe get help from an design agency like frog design!

Please build a more clear and innovative website, readable font sizes and offers and please give us more detailed pictures of your products - we want high resolution images! Customers often hardly buy a product they never touched but with big images, a decision to buy is easier made than with those little pictures on the current website!

Roll out your retail strategy in Europe more quickly that you can compete with HP and others! Don't fixate on one particular partner, use every retail partner like others do! 8 Comments »

Make more accessories customizable

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by gearhd 08/24/07

the new Dell notebooks finally offer some cooler accesories, like the colored mice and Timbuk2 carrying bags. I want to know when they will let users start making customizable accessories? Timbuk2 lets you build a custom bag, Nike lets you build custom shoes. Couldn't they offer customization on the accessories like they do on their notebooks today? 2 Comments »

More detailed hardware specs when building a computer

Service and Support, Desktops and Laptops submitted by bbr 08/24/07

Like a number of other users, i like to mix and match a system, but with the ease of a system put together by dell.

Show per component what the detailed specs are.
So we know what we're getting, perhaps there are equal quality components, for a lower price available, perhaps users want different hardware.

I could see this being difficult however, since you could go to a hardware store, buy 1500 Euros worth in loose components and end up with a computer equal to a 2000 euro dell system. More detailed component specs however will never hurt anyone though.
what's the refresh time of the monitor, size and manufacturer of the HD, buffer, ram size, bus speed, clock speed of the video card. etc.
