Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Offer the 3 top free Linux versions for free pre-installation on all Dell PCs.

Quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. For example OpenOffice.org, the Microsoft Office alternative, can shave hundreds of dollars off the price of a new PC. Cast your vote for OpenOffice and other free software.

Offer easy multi-boot options with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or NO Windows (yes, Linux can entirely replace Windows!)

Offer trade-ins and Linux CDs for older model Dell PCs. Cast your vote for the mini Linux Dell PC and the Universal Education Dell PC, both utilizing free software.

Would you try Linux if it were this easy?

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Please take a look at www.dell.com/open for linux options on the Inspiron.

Become the open source OEM

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by ntaylor0909 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**

I read the same question on Linux forums, all the time: What is the best brand of computer/laptop to purchase for Linux. I know that there is the n series of computers and notebooks, but it could go a step further. Accept the recent offer of free Linux driver development from the Linux Kernel Community so that DELLs "just work" with Linux. Maybe look at some ideas like LinuxBIOS and/or OpenBIOS. Become the OEM that everyone recommends. There is a growing market for Open Source friendly computers and DELL could own that market.

In the past year, we've made a lot of progress on getting Linux to work well on all of our products. Our goal is to become the hardware vendor of choice for Linux users. Click here to learn more from john_h.

How about limiting user name length?

IdeaStorm submitted by mistern 06/24/07

Yeah right, jorge_is_my_hero_he_is_so_cool_and_smart_i_think_he-should_be_president is a funny guy. Still, his name is too long.

How about limiting user names to 20 characters (or maybe even less)?

Come on, you bloody like this idea! 4 Comments »

Put A DELL Direct store right next to all the APPLE stores!

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by reg 06/27/07

Apple spent millions finding Retail Locations that generate large volume traffic and sell lots and lots of Mac stuff..

So, save money - where ever an Apple Retail store is located, put a DELL Direct store right beside it.

Have Apple trade in days so people can trade in their old G3 / G4 / G5 macs and get a real Intel machine that runs all versions of Linux and Windows, without any problems.

Where Ever Apple goes - be there to take their customers with low prices and better service. 10 Comments »

The Option to Preinstall Alternative Browsers

Software submitted by gossymer 06/20/07

When it comes to browsers, people are beginning to understand that there is a choice beyond Internet Explorer. Provide them with that choice when they buy their computer.

Let them choose if they want to install Firefox, Opera, Netscape, Safari (for PC) etc.

The reason I mention several alternative browsers is because, it really depends on the country.

America likes Firefox as an alternative while Europe seems to be just as interested in Opera. Then there is Safari for PCs which is making some waves- might be worth it to provide an option for it once the final version is released.

When it comes to tech news, browsers are making a lot of noise. This is an easy way for Dell to use that to its advantage.

NOTE: This is not more bloatware! The buyer decides if they want an alternative browser. Otherwise nothing extra is installed. 10 Comments »

Easy link to Linux offering from homepage

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by kweiner 06/21/07

Currently it is very difficult to discover that Dell offers computers preinstalled with Ubuntu Linux. There should be a link to the Ubuntu offering somewhere from the dell.com home page. There should also be a link from any of the product pages that describe a Dell system with Windows. Comment »

Linux for business, too

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by lonelovetenerife 06/21/07

The Inquirer says: "WHILE DELL MAY have made some moves towards Ubuntu Linux, it is refusing to allow its business customers to buy it."

It's true? Dell sell Linux for home use, but not for business? I think Dell must sell computers with Linux to anybody, whatever the use they do....

Dell List Computer Configuration Options in order not random.

Dell Community, Dell Web Site submitted by jorge 06/25/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell list computer configuration options in an ordered list not random!

When configuring a computer a list of options for lets say the processor should be in order based on speed or price, here's an example from the Dell Precision M65:

O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5600 (1.83GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $37.35]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7600 (2.33GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $398.40]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7400 (2.16GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $207.50]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7200 (2.00GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $103.75]
* Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5500 (1.66GHz/667Mhz) [Included in Price]

Whats up with this list? Totally confusing or leads to confusion, for the average Joe, yet again today I had to explain that Dell just lists things randomly not in some optimal way.

The list should read like this (or in reverse but in order):

* Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5500 (1.66GHz/667Mhz) [Included in Price]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5600 (1.83GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $37.35]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7200 (2.00GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $103.75]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7400 (2.16GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $207.50]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7600 (2.33GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $398.40]

Make it so and quite confusing your customers!

Sell US PCs everywhere

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by davewizard 06/28/07

We all know that Dell sells excellent machines but... some hardware and OS (linux) options are only valid in the US!, here in the non US world we would really love to have the same buying options and benefits

PS.. I've noticed that in other countries, customizing PCs and notebooks is lots more expensive than the same customatization in the US 1 Comment »

TheOpenCD.org should be an option for any Dell OS, regardless if Windows or Ubuntu

Linux, Operating Systems, Software submitted by jorge 05/26/07

Dell should offer the TheOpenCD.org CD as an option for customers to select when configuring their purchase. Again, irrelevant of Windows or Ubuntu. TheOpenCD offers the following Software Suites for Free and without the usual Bloatware that irritates customers:

Design - Blender, GNU Image Manipulation Program, Inkscape, NVU, Scribus, Tux Paint.

Games - Battle for Wesnoth, Enigma, Neverball, Sokoban YASC.

Internet - Azureus, FileZilla, Firefox, Gaim, HTTrack, RSSOwl, Thunderbird, TightVNC, WinSCP.

Multimedia - Audacity, Celestia, Really Slick Screensavers, Stellarium.

Productivity - MoinMoin, OpenOffice.org, PDFCreator, Notepad2.

Utilities - 7-zip, Abakt, Clamwin, GTK+, HealthMonitor, Workrave.

Due to an unpredictable change I alter my idea to !

TheOpenDisc.com CD should be given out if TheOpenCD.org is not complete enough for you! Its pretty much the same thing, opensource software for the price of Free yet many more apps! So a win win for all! Yeay!

linux hardware support

Dell, Linux, Monitors and Displays, Operating Systems submitted by xiandrow 06/06/07

There has been a lot of headway in the Linux support area of computer technology in the last few years. It would be awesome to see Dell lead the pack in general Linux driver support. I would be a more regular customer! The hardware on my Dell Inspiron 1501doesn't fully support Linux. Graphics and Wireless drivers are badly needed. This is a good machine, but Vista just isn't up to par yet. 2 Comments »

Use magsafe power connectors

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

Dell should offer option to remove VISTA - Blank disk is better than with VISTA preloaded

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by makuchaku 06/20/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Dell should offer an option of removing the default OS - Vista/XP when a user is configuring his order on DELL's website.

Apart from saving a few crutial $$, this is needed when a user already has a licensed copy of the OS.

:-)

Sell Lattitude Model Laptops with Ubuntu Preinstalled

Latitude products, Linux, Laptops submitted by rollerskatejamms 06/17/07

Some of us use our laptops for work and need something a bit more rugged. It's really awesome that Dell is providing Inspiron's with Ubuntu preinstalled now, but a professional level laptop guaranteed to be Ubuntu compatible would be AMAZING! 1 Comment »

Linux Media Players

Linux submitted by tatepc 06/17/07

My only concern in regards to linux installs on your notebooks is hardware support including wirelesss, video, sound, bluetooth, and a dvd decoder. If you supplied those files on a separate disk, or made access easy to executables on your website, that'd be great. No more ndswrapper required, nice.

Oh and lets not forget a stellar media player too. Then it wouldn't matter what distro your running for the most part.[reply]

Would it be too much to ask Dell Developers.. to hire some programmers (or in house) and make a great media player for linux platforms that supported all major audio and video formats?

In the long run, your company might be able to open additional income streams, and be one of the first open source media players that actually sells content too.. like AOL, WinAmp, Real, and Windows Media Players.
Thanks! 3 Comments »
