new perspective

New Product Ideas submitted by kth_eckert 2 days ago

My girlfriend and I were sharing the sofa watching a movie. Our heads were propped up on pillows, at best 30 degrees. The thought came to me that photo programs allow you to rotate the picture 90 degrees, So why cant you rotate your television picture in the same manner. For people who are bed ridden or as in my case sofa sharing this could make for a more comfortable movie watching experience. 2 Comments »

Plug and Play WiFi Repeater for laptops

submitted by badblood 2 days ago

I'd like a small USB plug and play repeater and clip on antenna for my laptop. Something to boost the internal antenna quite a lot for when you want to sit in the pool and use the computer, etc... But make it small, not like the whacking great things currently on the market - something to clip to the screen.

Thanks 2 Comments »

Conventional Batteries in Laptops

submitted by penguinsa 2 days ago

My trusty Nikon d70 has an "emergency" spare battery holder. If the rechargeable batteruy goes flat, you fill it with "standard" batteries. Could we have something similar for laptops?

This couples with the idea of LED backlit LCDs. Reduce the maximum voltage, and you reduce the number of cells required. 4 cells at 1.5v each gets you 6 volts.

Disposable C cells have plenty of juice (4500mAh typical). For the uber thin crowd, you might need multiple AA's (2500mAh each) in prallel. Long life isn't the issue- use IN AN EMERGENCY is the issue here.

I like the idea of a compartment at the hinge of a laptop, with a bayonet quick release and the ability to drop in fresh batteries. 3 Comments »

Please design your notebook edge in front thin and round on top. This might give the illusion, that there is nothing on the table. 3 Comments »

Buy a laptop, get free ipod SHOULD = buy a laptop, get free ZUNE

Advertising and Marketing submitted by chylag123 Yesterday

Dell could do more to target the college market. Apple is offering a promotion until September where ANY purchase of an apple laptop includes a FREE 8 GB IPOD touch for students. (www.apple.com for verification) I am attracted to the Studio series, and am impressed with the many improvements comparable with from the ibook pro (for example, backlit keyboards). However, a free IPOD touch blows Dell out of the water on comparable notebooks.

Also, Apple's student discount is ten times that of what Dell offers ($17 off at 10% of purchasing price from Dell vs. $182 off the least expensive systems listed at $999 from Apple.)

Dell is making it clear it doesn’t value it's collegiate business. As a repeat Dell customer, this is very disappointing. Please reconsider. 7 Comments »

Voice Texting Device

Software submitted by tamika38 Jun 30 **ALREADY OFFERED**

My idea for Dell Idea Storm is a voice activated device that can appeal to everyone but especially writers and people with disabilities. This would be a device that can alleviate writing. What it can actually do is record your voice onto the computer screen and can allow for corrections as well as typing for the individual. This is more like voice texting but on the computer.

This is offered through Windows Vista Speach Recognition

Do not merge ideas until you can unmerge them.

There have been several incidents of IdeaStorm moderators merging ideas that are not in fact duplicates. Therefore, I suggest that ideas not be merged until you are able to unmerge them. 17 Comments »

Positioning of the AC plug and rear vent of M1530.

Laptops submitted by ferris209 Jul 1

I may be in the minority here, but the placement of the power cable sticking out of the side of the XPS M1530 just drives me nuts. It constantly gets in the way. Also, the rear exhaust vent is a hassle also when I rest the computer on my lap. It'd be nice to have the positioning of those items reversed. The AC plug goes in the back and the exhaust vent shoots out the left side of the computer. 2 Comments »

Open Source Hardware

Dell submitted by simon_n Jun 18

There was an interesting article in The Economist magazine's technology quarterly out last week about hardware vendors publishing their hardware specs on-line for people to see and collaborate on:

Wouldn't you like to see Dell put their weight behind it too? Comment »

EXTERNAL POWER BUTTON FOR LAPTOPS, and better external display support

Laptops submitted by ringas85 Jun 29

Wish Dell would make powerbuttons elsewhere than opening the laptop cover and pressing the power button. This kinda makes it annoying for people like me whose laptop is connected to a 20 inch HD LCD monitor and doesnt care for the built-in laptop screen. This would make a laptop feel most like a laptop/desktop crossover, and if the dell boot-screen & bios automatically switched to external display once it was connected or the external display was powered up that would be a bonus! 6 Comments »

Fire wall Your Home

Software, Laptops submitted by nicole112707 3 days ago

I can't tell you how many times I have left the house and left the iron, oven, curling iron, or even my parent’s faulty clothing dryer on. You have to turn all the way around and go home or find someone who will break into your house to do it for you. I think that some kind of software developed that links from your home to your computer (at work or where ever) and your cell phone that would enable you to shut off certain outlets in your home would be a life saver. Imagine you are driving to the airport, and you realize that you THINK you left the iron on. Just open your cell phone, call your house, and punch in the appropriate code and the outlets power is cut. Or you open up your laptop log onto the dell site...it pulls up the outline of your home, you click the outlet that the unit is plugged into, and it shuts off. This would not only be ground breaking technology but would also save lives. You could even go as far as to add a garage door shutter as an upgrade, or shut off lights.... turn down/up the air... the possibilities are endless. Just a thought! 8 Comments »

Re-think & redesign rack-mount methods

Servers and Storage submitted by phubert Jun 25

A recent suggestion called for improvement of the "cable management" arms for rack-mount servers.

Earlier, I suggested improving cabinet design and cable management.

What are the issues:

1-airflow/cooling
2-airflow/filtration
3-reducing cable clutter
4-ease-of-maintenance for rack-mounted systems
5-ease of cabinet movement when needed

Perhaps both the rack-mount _systems_ AND the cabinets need re-thinking.

Are there strong, lighter weight materials (rigidity, strength, heat conductivity?) for cabinets _and_ server cases?

How can both cooling and dust issues be addressed??

IF no server is to be pulled-out for maintenance while connected to power, how can its cables be held together for easy reattachment??? 7 Comments »

Let us give all features of a mobile phone to laptop

New Product Ideas submitted by sks405 2 days ago

Today mobile phones are getting more powerful with GPS, windows mobile 6.0 and digital camera. They are kind of trying to become laptop.

Why can't a laptop try to give all utilities of a mobile phone? That will help me to keep just a laptop with me. I need mobile phone, GPS and a better camera in my laptop.

Today, I have 13.1 inch notebook which I can easily carry in car or small bag. When I have 2 additional batteries, I can always keep my laptop on. For mobile phone, one software can be made which will mimic virtual mobile phone. There should be any easy place to insert SIM card. For GPS, today I have to attach one hardware and need to install software. It can be made internal. The web camera can be made powerful.

I am sure, when all these features are put in notebook, it will become more useful device of our modern life. It will sale more and more and more.

Add removeable drive trays to system configuration

Desktops, Dimension products, New Product Ideas, Small Business, Vostro products, Desktops and Laptops submitted by silver 2 days ago

I have two kids which combine with the requisite digital still and video cameras and digital audio to make for a whole lot of data to backup. To make life a little easier and less frustrating I've installed drive trays and secondary drives in all of our systems. To make a backup I simply turn the computer off, turn the keyswitch on, reboot, make my backup with Acronis True Image, shut down the system, turn off the drive and finally reboot the computer. This is so much faster and more dependable than USB drives. 5 Comments »
