Make Linux and no Operating system standard options on all future products

OK Dell you have committed to supplying Linux options in limited form. Since you have laid the groundwork already here is the next step. Every new product you release that needs an Operating system should have Linux and also no Operating System as an option in the configuration along side Windows. Since you have to write drivers and test compatability for Vista when making a new product just make it compatable with Linux at the same time. There will no longer be a need for a seperate sections for Linux or no Operating system since all of the products will have the option. this will help make your site easier to navigate for you customers. You can also create an ACCURATE help me choose section for the OS choices.

OS installed in a protected partition on SSD offerings

With the new SSD offerings, Dell could install the OS in a protected, read-only partition in the SSD (something ROM-like) so the machine could be less prone to malware, viruses, etc. Also, this could boost boot-up times greatly (Imagine booting up WinXP in seconds, or taking advantage of all the Vista booting features for speed increase).
Obviously, this configuration should apply only to people that won´t be tampering with the default OS, or replacing it.
Maybe some MS modifications will be needed, to take a "layers" approach for patches and updates that won´t touch the original OS core, but there must be a workaround. 7 Comments »

Push SSD in notebooks esp the 1330

Solid State Drives (SSD) are the way to go. I am in the market to replace my old trusty 500m from 4 years ago. However, I have found few laptops that are really worth replacing my trusty 4.9lb laptop with. Newer laptops are no doubt better, but in the range of the portable non-desktop replacing market I have been disappointed.

Until the Toshiba R500... Come on Dell, push the SSD technology and get a hold of this semi-ultraportable market!!! I mean why pay $500 (THAT'S RIGHT $500!!) for a 32Gb SSD in the 1330 when the R500 (although a little more $) is breathing down your Dell neck with a sub 2lb laptop with a 64Gb SSD? Oh yeah, I know why. B/c Toshiba is directly involved in the evolution of SSD technology. They just dont rely on others to make the drives and then buy them to put in their computers.

IDEA: bring down the cost of the SSD thru aggressive ordering. Send the relatively hefty 13.3 1330 XPS into a truly competitive weight category with the advantage of cost and a nice 13.3 widescreen w LCD technology.

Now that is a recipe I would use and buy right away. Until then, I will use my sub 5lb 500m until it dies. The cost of upgrading to a laptop with little advantage in weight is just not really worth it. We need a refreshing, appealing, non-black box, & AFFORDABLE portable product. 3 Comments »

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

Option for Upgraded power supply unit

I'd like to see the option of an upgraded PSU on all desktops. I have some experience upgrading desktops, but I'd prefer that my PSU be a ltitle over-spec so that I can drop in a new video card, HD or processor without worrying that I'm going to overload the 300w PSU commonly found in your Inspiron desktops. Even a boost to 375w would be reassuring that the desktop will easily handle minor to moderately power-hungry upgrades in the future. 3 Comments »

Port Locations....

Here are some ports that MUST be in the back of a Notebook.

AND NOT ON THE SIDE.

1. Power input jack.
2. 2 USB ports - at least. One for mouse / wireless mouse dongle. One for USB hub, etc.
3. HDMI/DVI/VGA - because the cables are thick.
4. Ethernet

Let's keep the desktop clean and not have cables coming out the sides of the notebook which takes up valuable space. Not to mention being an eye sore.

Leather, Textile and other tactile designs

I'd like to see well-designed snap-on covers offered in leather finishes (smooth leather, subtly embossed leather, perhaps croco or ostrich designs for those with more flair than I!) and other soft-touch designs. I'm not suggesting that the laptop actually be squishy, but rather that the hard surfaces are tracted with a nice-to-touch finish.

Basically, i'd like a lappie that look distinctive but isn't a bright color, can be changed up with the finish gets dirty or scratched and is a pleasure to hold and touch. You might consider:

Thin neoprene/"wetsuit" materials
Natural "linen"-look weaves of material
Natural wood-grain effects or even real wood veneers (the look of black wenge wood, teak, or even a nautical-inspired striped wood inlay design)

For a softer look, how about:
Satin aluminum finish
Satin Copper
Gunmetal/titanium look
"Rust" or patinated finish

True Media Center PC form factor

I've been waiting patiently for Dell to release a true home theater style PC form factor. All other PC companies have a product in this form factor except Dell. The product needs to look like an audio component and should have the following features as a minimum:

fanless cooling design or at least a passive cooling system with ultra quiet fan,
ability to support RAID,
ability to support Media Center functionality in Microsoft Vista (includes HD TV),
ability to suppot high end graphics cards,
ability to support high end HD audio cards with 7.1 channels,
ability to support an HD DVD drive,
ability to support expansion and upgrades in the future,
ability to support a rack moount option.

A good example of this form factor is the Sony Viao XL3, however, please do not force users into one HD DVD format over another but let them choose... 7 Comments »

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.

I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

Make A Wireless Dell

Apple has a real, valid point: Too many cables in a typical PC setup.

I think Dell could make a combo cable, or a unified display (display/camera/stereo speakers).

Travel Monitors

Some of us in the Business Travel World have been spoiled while in the office with having two monitors. At first I was not used to using multiple monitors but now I find it hard to work any other way. My suggestion is for Dell to create a monitor that is as small as a laptop (15 in screen), has a stand that folds into the back of the monitor and a cover for the front. This way the monitor can be taken on the road and all of us who are spoiled with two monitors in the office can take the luxury with us. The ideal monitor would be about the size of a regular laptop so that it could fit in an oversized laptop bag. I think that the travel monitor would be a great success for Accountants, Lawyers, Consultants, etc. who travel and set up work sites at client locations. 1 Comment »

I think this is a great step for dell to launch this site. However, I think the intellectual property of the idea givers should be respected. Dell should offer a royalty/prize, gift or some incentive for the Ideas to the user who's ideas are implemented . This would generate more interest from the people as well enhance Dells Corporate image. End of the day, it is dell who is benefiting from all the ideas that are being generated here instead in the boardroom full of "idea Exhausted" Executives! 9 Comments »

Spell Checking Pen

My idea is a spell-checking pen. I am the worlds worst speller and I would love to have a pen that will correct my spelling so that I can just jot down a note without first having to type it into Word.

I am not sure how it would work maybe something that has a special ink and you can scan it and it will make the misspelled word a different color and then you can change it.

Maybe a little keyboard on the side that you type into first.

Maybe something that as you write flashes to let you know you spelled the word wrong.

It should be able to dock with a computer to get updates on new words and be recharged.

I know that by submitting this you can use my idea without compensation and all that good stuff but please just let me know if you end up developing this. That way I can go hey see that really cool product. That was my idea. LOL

Laptop Memory - Next to NO limit needs to be the norm

I recently bought a desktop motherboard for a system I am building for myself. It's capable of 32G of memory. Sure I can't buy 8G DIMMS but at least I won't out grow the memory aspect for many years.

Desktop and laptop should not have a limit closely related to the OS.

Dell your hardware! You make some of the best choices but you need to talk to your manufactures and have them push the window a lot..

Today I should be able to buy a laptop that at minimum maxes out at 8G. So what if the OS doesn't recognize it today, it will soon or I can install one that does.

I am tired of buying computers, immediately buying all the memory it can hold and then in a year being disappointed that I have no way to upgrade. 1 Comment »

Downloadable, PDF format, full technical specs for all systems

Before I buy, I would like to have the options of downloading the full technical specifications of the system. Not just the brief specifications. Place a link under "tech specs" tab that allows you to view or download the full specification PDF file for those of us who care about and understand such things. This way everyone is satisfied.
We are looking to improve the specs pages by making them consistent across all product lines, provide more in-depth specifications and making them available in a printable format.

DVI or HDMI out on all laptops models?

this would be a big jump, if dell add "DVI out" on all dell laptops, so people can connect to there LCD Displays or LCD HDTVs natively

the picture quality will be grealy improved

this should be easy to do as most of new chipsets has dvi out

not many laptop manufacturers add "dvi out" to there lower end products, so it might be a wise move to do so

all LCD monitors and lcd hdtvs has dvi or hdmi in so it might work well

and meybe remove the old VGA out and put a singel DVI-I, it can be used as analog (VGA) to, by using VGA-to-DVI-I adapter like tose used on

standard computer graphic cards for years now

many people like me connect monitor via dvi or hdmi to get the best picture and color quality
