Two-finger scroll

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by hephaestus 07/04/07

The Apple Macbooks have a two-finger scroll, which is fabulous. You don't have to grab the scrollbar of your web browser or arrow down. You just use two fingers on the touchpad and the page automatically scrolls. This seems like such a simple, but wonderfully convenient feature, it should be standard on all Dell notebooks. 8 Comments »

More Dell <-> Community Communication

IdeaStorm submitted by mistern 05/15/07

Certainly, Dell's move to start IdeaStorm was a good one, and I think it will improve the situation quite a bit.

What I'd like to see is more direct and spontaneous (but somewhat official) communication between Dell employees and the users of this site. dell_admin1 does communicate with us, but mainly about administrative issues.

You get our feedback. We want your feedback. Agree?

jmxz's part of the idea (his article was merged here):

IdeasStorm needs more participation from Dell Management and Employees

Dell has meetings with the management to discuss Ideas that are posted to the site. Why can’t some of those managers stop by and ask questions or maybe enlighten users when they suggest an idea that isn’t feasible. I’m not saying they need to spend the whole day doing this but maybe just pop in once in a while. I believe that such conversations lead to better ideas not only from us but from Dell employees as well. This kind of interaction would also make users know that they are being listened to. Further information in the comments of this Idea. 209 Comments »

Hires Some Brains To recognize ideas

Dell, IdeaStorm submitted by googideas 07/11/07

A good idea makes Dell money and keeps costs down for the consumer, or, at least allows for more R&D.

Too bad that most senior Dell management are so "techie" (or busy) that they haven't the resources, in any sense you wish to hear this in, to rcognize where good ideas come from. I've posted one months ago; it would take but one person to make the enquiry, and presto, you'd have a brand new product which would solve many needs, including universal connectiity for components, and would be both scalable and partnerable. You'd also make a bucket load of money - or is making money now a secondary issue?

Vote this up if you as a thinker want to see the results of improving gaming, connectiivity, and user friendliness. 9 Comments »

12 cell battery for 17-inch XPS

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by urackon 07/13/07

Try to fit in a 12 cell battery into the 17-inch notebook of the XPS line. The XPS's use some pretty power hungry parts (especially the graphics card, actually mainly the graphics card) yet their 9 cell battery is the same one you can find on much smaller lower end notebooks. The old 12 inch xps even had one I think(although it was fat). I know you have to take into consideration the thickness but their 17inch gaming notebooks. 2 Comments »

DVI or HDMI out on all laptops models?

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by tommarnk 07/06/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

this would be a big jump, if dell add "DVI out" on all dell laptops, so people can connect to there LCD Displays or LCD HDTVs natively

the picture quality will be grealy improved

this should be easy to do as most of new chipsets has dvi out

not many laptop manufacturers add "dvi out" to there lower end products, so it might be a wise move to do so

all LCD monitors and lcd hdtvs has dvi or hdmi in so it might work well

and meybe remove the old VGA out and put a singel DVI-I, it can be used as analog (VGA) to, by using VGA-to-DVI-I adapter like tose used on

standard computer graphic cards for years now

many people like me connect monitor via dvi or hdmi to get the best picture and color quality

The offerings for the XPS M1730: Dual-link DVI-I (support for 30-inch displays) and HDMI via DVI adapter. Check out all the specs for the new systems.

Notebooks should be more 'portable'

submitted by manu08 07/11/07

Currently, I feel Dell offers the least portable notebooks. The build quality is far inferior when compared to HP, IBM & Apple so it does not explain the sacrifice in portability. This is especially true with the Inspiron series notebooks. I know Dell released new notebooks recently but there is room for a lot more improvement.
To start off, Dell needs to make their notebooks more portable, build quality & design can be worked on slowly. These are the kind of notebooks I have in mind:
A 17" notebook should be about 6 - 9 lbs. (1.3" - 1.65" thick)
A 15" notebook should be about 5 - 6 lbs. (1" - 1.4" thick)
A 14" notebook should be about 4 - 5 lbs. (0.9" - 1.2" thick)
A 13" notebook should be about <4lbs>t feel all that awful. 4 Comments »

Multi touch, image sensing and power generating diodes in display

Desktops, Monitors and Displays submitted by j.bandringa 07/09/07

I would like to have an image sensing, power generating and multi touch display. Multifunctional organic diodes can do this.

Multifunctional organic diodes can:

• Show you something like a regular display (OLED);

• See you like a webcam (photodiode);

• Built multi touch sensing displays;

• Generate electricity like a solar cell.

I would like Dell to promote research in this field. Here you find a patent of a multifunctional organic diode. It's written in Japanese though. Take a look at the videos in the comments if you want. 4 Comments »

Dual OS systems

New Product Ideas, Operating Systems, Operating Systems - Multiboot submitted by future_maker 07/11/07

Many of us want to use Linux, but there are many applications that run only on Windows. Do not make us choose, add a swapable OS into the system.

HW way: Harddrives are cheep, on can use swapable HDs with preinstalled OS isntead just repartitioning a single HD. Rememer swappable HD drowers from 10 years ago? Imagine you have several HD drawers with your different system, it is like virtual PC withoud slowdowns and hustle. I could have several Windows and Linux versions and I just need to slide in the right drawer and reboot the machine to switch the OS. The all can use the same NTSF data drive.

SW way: If that is too expensive, then just add a clean partitioning facilties to BIOS so that each partition can be reinstalled without changing the loader. If you can do it so an average Windows user can figure it without a manual or googling, that would increase the value of the system for many of us.

Stop cutting off unused connectors

Desktops submitted by tired_ 07/11/07

I've noticed Dell systems permanently disable unused connections on the motherboard. For example, a friend of mine just bought a Dimension E521, intending to put his old 250GB IDE hard drive into it to go with the new SATA hard drive Dell provided. We were stunned to discover that, while there was a Primary IDE connection on the motherboard, the plug where you connect the cable had been cut off the board! Now, I can't see how cutting off a connector like this adds any value for Dell, and I certainly saw how disappointed and annoyed my friend was, especially considering that Dell never informed him before purchase that the system would be artificially constrained from upgrades. Please stop doing this. 7 Comments »

WUXGA screen and Linux for Inspiron 1520

Inspiron products, Linux, Monitors and Displays submitted by claudio_ch 07/08/07

OK, this is a very selfish idea, But this is just the notebook I would buy immediately to replace my current Inspiron. Oh and I live in Switzerland, so please don't make it an USA offer only.

Thank you.

PS: Why does your spell checker suggest me to replace Inspiron by conspiracy ? :-) 4 Comments »

NICE New Dell montor! Keep making great designs like this.

Monitors and Displays submitted by jmxz 05/18/07

http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/18/dells-ultra-thin-concept-lcd-with-displayp...

Dell's ultra-thin LCD concept with DisplayPort going retail?
...
Remember that super swanky Dell monitor concept we went ga ga over back at January's CES? Yeah, we still find it hard to believe it's a Dell design. Well, it'll apparently be up for sale later in the year.
Beautiful - we want more great designs like this. 41 Comments »

Provide extra small rubber feet for your laptops.

Laptops submitted by jmxz 07/11/07

Yesterday a group of us were joking that all 3 of us had three-footed Dell laptops.
The guy with a mac had no such problem.

This is an annoyance to your customers and embarrassing to Dell.

It's been pointed out elsewhere that your small rubber feet on your notebooks fall off easily.
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/70965/Smaller_rubber_feet_that_dont_fal...
Until you can fix this, please supply a few extra small rubber feet when you ship your laptops so people can replace them.

Also - since this is such an annoying defect and makes Dell laptops look almost laughable when they wobble in a business meeting; please send extra rubber feet to any of your existing customers who send you a self-addressed stamped envelope asking for some. 3 Comments »

Smaller rubber feet that don't fall off

Inspiron products submitted by jtrpop 07/02/07

The rubber feet on my Inspiron are big and get snagged when slipping into my computer bag. One has already fallen off. Make them slimmer and less prone to falling off. 24 Comments »

Ubuntu PCs need more video card options

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by nkmhutirv 06/13/07

Dell desktops and notebooks preloaded with Ubuntu should have more video cards to choose from!

I do not know how Nvidia 7300LE compares to other video cards, but I do not belive TurboCache is suitable even for the most casual gaming.TurboCache's memory sharing technology is just not suitable. Yes, I do play 3d accelerated games from time to time on Ubuntu! You could offer some Nvidia 7600, 7800 or some other medium range video card. Nothing fancy, just something to allow some 3d effects.

Even Dell PCs preloaded with FreeDos have 2 video cards to choose from:

128MB ATI Radeon X1300 [Included in Price]

256MB ATI Radeon X1300 Pro [add $50 or $2/month1]

With Ubuntu PCs you have to choose between a range of just one video card:

correction: you have 2 options:

Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 [Included in Price]

256MB nVidia Geforce 7300LE TurboCache [add $50 or $2/month1]

But what's the difference between them? I want to play games 1-2 years old. I do not belive this will be posible with this kind of cards.

You could say Dell does not address gamers, but Dell's Windows based PCs have a lot more advanced video cards: "Stunning 3D graphics performance with the latest single and dual graphics cards in the market available". Unfortunately such advanced graphics is available only to Vista users, not even XP buyers!

Have you seen the noise (fuzz, amazement) 3d effects in Ubuntu have generated? You see, Ubuntu users appreciate 3d acceleration in Linux. Don't restrict them to just integrated graphics and TurboCache! 5 Comments »

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.
