Latitude XT Specs

Latitude products, Sales Strategies submitted by ccpljat May 31

Why is is that with the Latitude XT, which is the only Dell computer that I have seen that is a touch screen tablet, you can't get any higher than a 1.33 GHz 533 Mhz processor? Shouldn't this laptop be allowed to be customized with the same options as the other laptops? I would think about getting a convertible laptop like that, but I don't think it would run what I need it to run. Please consider adding more powerful processors to it.

Also, you can't go above 3.0 gig of memory. There should be an option for more than that.

A bigger hard drive would be nice too.

How about dedicated graphics option? Comment »

Low cost staff shouldn't mean untrained staff...

Service and Support submitted by cestuila May 31

Of course, when you hire someone who will stay 6 months in the company and pay him/her a basic wage... you don't want to invest in him/her.
But some basic product knowledge is NECESSARY!

Here's a recent situation I read: someone going on the Dell chat and asking what accessories come with the XPS M1330 (thinking about the headphones, remote control, second skin, etc.) and the chat person just answers that that laptop doesn't come with ANY accessory!!!

So maybe that person thought, if I don't tell him the laptop comes with accessories, he might buy them so more sales for the company! (I don't actually think that person thought so much...) But the reality is that this customer had already placed his order and just wanted confirmation.
In the end, he now is about to cancel his order (although I told him that he WILL receive the accessories) because he is unsure he will get them...

So the situation is that DELL may actually lose business because of untrained personnel. 7 Comments »

Add USB port 5V supply to Laptop Powersupply units

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by michael.schwarz May 14

Today a travelling laptop user has often additional mobile devices which are charged by the USB port like Music players, mobile phones, PDA's etc. To charge these the Laptop unfortunate must be switched on. If the Transformator/ power supply for Laptops would have an USB power supply connector, - devices could be charged indendent from running the Laptop. (e.g. at nigth in Hotel)

I experienced such capability some time ago by an third party Power supply and found it very valuable.

If this would be added to Dell Laptop power adapters it would offer and added value to the today mobile Users. 1 Comment »

Private ideas

IdeaStorm submitted by regarciac May 14

I think first of all, the ideas included in this portal should be private, and only answered by Dell, cause you are opening the information of some very good ideas to everyone in the web. I think it's a really good idea this page and its content, but making it public reduces its competitive advantage. 9 Comments »

Make parts return consistent - and SIMPLE

Servers and Storage, Service and Support submitted by phubert May 8

This week, I had the opportunity to return two different power supplies.

One for a PowerEdge 1750 and today one for a PowerVault 114T.

The return slip for the 1750 was a narrow, multicopy form where you must fill in the sender's name and address, your own name and phone number and some billing reference (for which there IS nothing supplied and I substitute "order number" (note: I've done THIS _many_ times!)).

The return process for the 114T part was a simple "EZ RETURN WAYBILL" that I've seen at least _once_ before. Nothing to fill out (and, please, Dell, TELL ME exactly WHY there SHOULD be???).

Doesn't the latter sound more sensible?

Why does Dell use both and why does the more complicated version seem to predominate???

Couldn't DELL save money by using a single method????? 3 Comments »

Make both cords detachable on A/C Power Adapters

Laptop Power submitted by goldschool May 8

Dell just had to send me a new A/C power adapter because a short developed in the cord that attaches to the computer (at Dell's cost under my warranty). The cord that plugs into the electrical socket is already detachable, but the cord from the adapter to the computer is not. Had the latter been detachable, Dell could have saved itself money by replacing just the cord and not the whole adapter. The main part of my old adapter is perfectly good but now must be trashed because of the short in the cord (which developed in or right behind the plug which might make it hard or impossible to repair). Here's a way for Dell to save money on warranty replacements and keep perfectly good power adapter units out of the land fills. 1 Comment »

Introduce a "No Component" Option When Customizing

Environment, Service and Support submitted by fahdriyami Apr 23

Intoduce an option to not choose a PC component especially for the XPS Desktop Range, most of Gaming Consumers have already built a PC before and have some of the essential components already, for example, i already have a compatible Intel processor and want my Dell shipped without a processor to save money. a "No Component" limit should also be applied, and not all components should have this option. Talking from a business point of view, this could reduce electronic waste in the long run, however it could also reduce sales of the components which could upset manufacturers...
BUT, the earth is more important. 28 Comments »

DON'T BUY RADIO SHACK!!!

Dell submitted by jervis961 Apr 23

There is a rumor out that Dell is trying to buy Radio Shack.

http://tinyurl.com/6dzwte

While I would like to see some Dell stores this is not the way to do it. Just about every Radio Shack I've been in is a run down mess and not the place I would think of for cutting edge tech. Dell needs to build up its brand not sink it lower. 18 Comments »

Parts & Spares and compatibility

Dell Web Site submitted by pjb1008 Apr 24

When trying to get accessories for Dell laptops (eg. docking station, external CD drive etc), it is difficult to work out what I need to buy - I get lots of results back, but I need to go into the description of each one separately to work out which one is appropriate for my laptop. I want to enter a service tag, and then see only the compatible equipment.

Where there are funny connectors involved (eg. the double-height USB+power connector), that should be made clear.

It needs to be clear how the different parts relate to each other (eg. which of D/Bay, D/Port, Media base, laptop stand, monitor stand do I need?). 4 Comments »

Cell phone and computer bundle

Sales Strategies submitted by yoda 03/01/07

Why not have a Dell computer and an optional upsell on a cell phone? The convergence of the computer and cell phone is nearing so why not and be the first to bundle a cell phone and PC. 1 Comment »

Service Tags on monitors

Monitors and Displays, Sales Strategies submitted by ekozel Apr 14

It took 3 hours to get a replacement monitor for a bad monitor. Unfortunately Dell does not service tag monitors. In a 350 PC environment the business user doesn't always have access to records 1 or 2 years old. Also in this environment monitors and PCs move around and sometimes the pc it was ordered with is no longer the PC it's attached to, or if it was ordered without a PC makes it's very difficult to get a replacement monitor. You should consider placing a service tag on all monitors so that they can easily be tracked back to the origin of sale. Expecting the customer to maintain a record of hundreds of monitors and which ones were purchased when and the order number just isn't a feasible solution. It aggrivates the customer and takes too long to find a solution to get the replacement monitor they need. If not a service tag a serial number. 3 Comments »

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Check out the white LED backlights on the <ahref>XPS M1730.

Gaming Notebooks for Girls..!

Gaming, Laptops submitted by ozzy_girl Jan 2

Why do gaming noteboooks all have to be Black or Silver?
Ok the XPS 1530 does came in White in Oz but where is the contrast pizazz?

There are a lot of females out there who play Sims2 and other games who want the Notebook they own colouful to match..! Ok the Inspiron 1520 comes in 8 colours but we need more flashy panels and features. Take the Asus Lamborghini VX2 for instance, incredible characteristics I adore, just not that price tag..!

Give us the JaGuR (G for girls)..!
We want high end processors Core2 Duo T7900 2.8ghz
with 4gb (not 4mb) RAM....at least a bit cheaper (thnx for the heads up winoffice)
High end Graphics NVidia GeForce 8800M GT 512MB GDDR3 or more..!
High display 1600 x 1050 but please please take away the shiny screens, it makes showing your friends your vids on the YouTube site impossible..!
The 15.4 inch size suits well and 2.5kgs a good weight
Make the Hard drive 7200rpm but you can keep it 120gb just give us an external sata connection for our back up drives..!
A decent docking station that is not just a USB replicator we want to unclick and Go Girls..! 19 Comments »

Put some attitude into the Latitude

Advertising and Marketing, Latitude products, Laptops submitted by jervis961 05/04/07

Dell needs a new Latitude model for people who need a stylish notebook for work but want it to be capable of play activities also. It should have a LED back lit 13.3 inch high resolution/contrast ratio trans reflective screen that swivels like a tablet but without the touch screen (touchscreen could be an upgrade). The option of a non-glossy screen would be available.

Media buttons on the monitor would be helpful for times when the screen is turned around and wouldn't be accidentally pushed when resting the notebook on your lap. A good example would be when you're on a plane watching a movie, the notebook would fit better in this configuration allowing you to see the screen easier.

Dell should use a design like in this leaked photo of an upcoming ultraportable.

It needs to have options like Dual core processor (Quad core when available for mobile), DVD burner, fingerprint reader, SSD, 5-1 card reader(with a cover so the card doesn't fall out), HDMI, Dolby Certified sound as well as a video card that is DX10 with at least 256mb of RAM(perhaps use cards from the Precision line for things like video editing) . It needs to be dual hard drive capable, 2 headphone jacks, built in microphone and the option of a built in camera 2MP or better. A WiFi hot spot finder would be helpful. Don't forget the docking port and gigabit Ethernet. Please, Please, Please do not skimp on bandwidth, only the newest technology please.

A LED light that can illuminate the keyboard in dark rooms and media connect must be standard. I would actually recommend using a black light over the keyboard as the white letters would pop without using a very bright light.

Vista Sideshow could be an option as well. At least a small monochrome screen with basic information so you don't have to power up the system.

I think there would be a large market for this type of system.

The advertising would be a great boost to Dell's image. Showing how your "new L-attitude" has changed your life. I've always looked at the Apple VS PC ads and wondered why can't I have both. I think Dell can supply the notebook that finally brings work and play together in a stylish but professional looking package.

What other options do you think should be added? 53 Comments »

Make it easier BUYING a system

Advertising and Marketing, Service and Support, Small Business, Simplify IT submitted by felix.schwarz Jan 3

IMHO Dell looses sales every day due to an over-complicated order process (at least in the small business area). In the small business section you get an offer directly from Dell by phone and have "special" contact person who you should call directly. After you get the offer by email, you can't just order the offered configuration on the web but you have to call your contact person and confirm the order.

The problem is that your contact person may be not available (vacations, calls with other customers), business sales is not available 24/7 and you can not order by calling other Dell call center agents. At least this is the current situation in Germany.

A recent experience should illustrate the issue:
I administer some networks for small businesses (up to 20 employees) which do not employ a dedicated network admin. In December a client needed a new notebook so I asked Dell for a quote on a Latitude laptop (Friday, 28.12.) and got a quite interesting offer. I needed to check back with my client to talk about some minor equipment details. So I could not order on Friday, I called Dell again on Monday (31.12.) but my contact person was not available (vacation). The mailbox named another agent as temporary delegation. This one was not available too any more - at 12am on a normal work day.

I called the phone central but the agent told me - even after I insisted, that I just want to order and already have an offer from Dell - that no agent can accept the offer now and that I have to call again on Wednesday (2.1.). I stumbled as this is something that I expected in a small shop with 1 or 2 employees but not in a global corporation with thousands call center agents world wide...

The delay was especially problematic as the new notebook was needed ASAP (as always), in mid-January at the latest and my sales person told me, they could probably manage to ship it by the 15th of January if I order in December.

2. January: My sales person was still not available. The alternative one was busy, I spoke on her mailbox but got no call back on Wednesday.

Finally, I got a call back today (3.1.) by my sales contact but now Dell just needs too long to ship the product to the customer so I had to choose another supplier which costs about 20% more but ships in a few days! Dell lost a sale due to poor internal organization despite superior technical quality AND a lower price.

I suspect that no other call center agent was available to accept my order because Dell has an internal reward system on the basis of customer orders and they have an internal codex that no-one may take customers away from another Dell agent.

I suggest:
1. If a small business customer has an offer, make it possible to place the order 24/7 (at least in Germany, you can not do this right now). Sometimes I need to work on Saturdays or late in the night. Just provide a web page where I enter the offer number and the payment option.

2. Do support established payment options even if these are unknown in the US. In Germany, "Lastschrifteinzug" is widely used (works like a Credit Card but you give the seller your bank account number and the permission to get the money directly from your bank account) but is not offered by Dell.

3. Improve your shipping times (may apply only to Germany). I know, that Dell is built on the "Built-to-order" principle but customers really expect that *I* ship computers "just in time" for them, too. And they don't announce this a month in advance but only a few days, 2-3 weeks at the most. Mostly, they just need ordinary business computers, nothing special, just "Windows ready". Why does Dell not provide some computers which are pre-assembled, can't be configured in any way (maybe choose the monitor you like) but are shipped to the customer within 24/48/72 hours? 2 Comments »

Paginate Comments

IdeaStorm submitted by cosh 07/24/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Some ideas have hundreds of comments. The pages are very long and it's annoying having to scroll all the way down every time. And I can't imagine how difficult it must be if you use a screen reader to try and get through them all. (Not that IdeaStorm actually works with a screen reader at all).

Can we please have comments in multiple pages once there's a lot of them, instead of one long list? It's just common sense - this must be the only website in the world that doesn't put them on multiple pages.

(It'll be easier on your server too. I mean look at this idea: http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/61771
The whole page is well over a megabyte download every time you want to submit or edit a comment.)
Ideas with a high volume of comments are paginated every 100 comments. Page navigation can be found at the top and bottom of an idea. Read more about this here .
