Evaluate using Apple's internally at Dell.

Simplify IT submitted by jmxz Apr 18

And before voting this down, read about IBM's fascinating pilot program for using Macs internally and the advantages they're finding.

IBM’s Research Information Services launched an internal pilot program designed to study the possibility of moving significant numbers of employees to the Mac platform. The study has already found an enthusiastic response from participants and is helping to drive Mac support for IBM’s business applications. ... IBM is actively working to move away from its dependence upon Microsoft Windows and toward a heterogeneous cross-platform future.

The pilot program document outlined a series of reasons for evaluating MacBook Pro laptops as a replacement for the Windows-based ThinkPads currently in use inside the company:

# Alternative to Microsoft Windows
# Less prone to security issues
# Widely used in the academic world with which Research has close ties
# Many new hires are more comfortable with the Mac and lately asking for it
# Growing Mac community in Research and within IBM that finds the development environment on Mac more convenient
# Growing acceptance of the Mac as a consumer and business oriented client platform

The first phase of the pilot program ran from October 2007 through January 2008.
...
Of the 22 of 24 who responded, 18 said that the Mac offered a “better or best experience” compared to their existing computer, one rated it “equal or good,” and three said the Mac offered a “worse experience.”

Surely you at Dell want to give your employees a "better or best experience".

And if you can learn something from it, and bring some of those "better or best experiences" to Dell computers too - it would be good for your customers as well. 10 Comments »

Bring back Microsoft Office 2003 Pre-installed.

Software submitted by gear Apr 18

I have used every version of Microsoft Office including Office 2007.

After extensively testing Office 2007, a decision was made not to change for the following reasons:

- The ribbon interface is not an improvement for me. I do not need it, and everyone I know is familiar with the Office 2003 interface.

- There is no backward compatibility mode to switch back to the Office 2003 interface --- an aftermarket product exist, but why should I pay for something that Microsoft should have provided to begin with?

- There is a serious problem with backward compatibility with Microsoft Outlook 2003 and previous versions.

I have thousands of contacts classified in Microsoft Outlook and sorted according to a proprietary classification scheme. There is no way to import this scheme and convert to the new color code (which is itself impossible for a color blind person to use) without manually recoding every contact.

- There are very few improvements in the suite that I cannot do without.

- Web based applications have become so powerful that I can do much of what Office use to do for me online.

Hence, if Office 2003 was offered as a pre-installed option, I might buy it.

No way I would buy Office 2007. 18 Comments »

Adjust registration to allow minors to sign up --with parent/guardian permission

IdeaStorm submitted by mkmaster78 Apr 21

Recently there have been several issues with the Terms of Use (TOU) and its requirement of participants to be age 18 or older (as the TOU represents a legal contract). Without changing the TOU, it would be easy to add a little form to the registration page to enable parents/guardians to give their consent by adding and confirming their email. Several sites have employed this, GeoCities coming to mind as it is one I had to that with when I was younger. This is a minor change that could these resourceful minors participate in the responsible and useful manner that they have done so to this date.
Note: Created this as prompted by phubert.
Note: Hopefully, Dell will consider reinstating the accounts of those whose accounts have been revoked because of this issue, once this has been resolved. 7 Comments »

Offer No OS Option on all PCs for Home / Small Business Markets

Operating Systems submitted by gear Apr 22

Why not sell PCs with no OS installed and just include the drivers disk for popular OSes that are known to work on it like (XP, Linux, and Vista).

I already have licenses for XP and Linux and I can install my own here.

Having the drivers disk would mean I don't have to download them. 3 Comments »

All together now

New Product Ideas submitted by tonylinde Apr 22

I'd like to see a PC developed which consists of a desktop, laptop, PDA, MP3 player and other 'components', each of which can be removed from the main assembly or added back into it.

Each component has its own chip and memory so that it can act on its own but in the main assembly desktop all the components act in concert and can be used by the others. Plugging the laptop into the main assembly will add the laptop's LCD as a second screen, the drive will add to the desktop list of available drives and the cpu and ram can be used as a secondary processor by the main processor.

An alternative is that plugging the laptop into the desktop makes the whole unit available akin to a virtual machine with drag-and-drop working between the two.

Plugging a pda or mp3 player into either the laptop or the desktop also makes the ram and any inserted flash drives available to the larger processor but they can also act as 'virtual machines' as above with the laptop.

The key benefit to all this is that no-one need ever have to shift content from one device to another and, when stacked together, each unit performs its own job as before but can also do so in concert with all the others. 3 Comments »

Media Bays for expanability on all laptop lines

Laptop Power submitted by sykosoft Apr 22

Not so long ago, nearly all Dell laptops had media bays (nearly all of the inspiron, latitude, and precision models). Expandability is one of the reason I come back to Dell again and again. Instead of having to purchase a new laptop to add a blu-ray (or whatever comes next) drive, I simply purchase the media bay device. Similarly, no matter how good battery life becomes, a single battery will NEVER be able to last as long as 2 batteries. 2 will always be more than 1. (rumor has it the e-series won't have a media bay battery, this would be very unfortunate!) 5 Comments »

Nothing beats a hardware wheel for volume control!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by wheelie Apr 22

A simple request – an old fashioned analogue wheel for volume control for every computer with speakers. Fiddling with software volume controls [beep beep beep beep…] is a miserable experience and even hardware button controls are limited – the increments are usually too big or small for a given audio file. Reinvent the wheel! 2 Comments »

Use magsafe power connectors

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

Ubuntu Dell Repo

Linux, Service and Support submitted by tekhawk 07/20/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

basicly a simple idea dell to support the ubuntu community a little bit by running a repo for its laptops and desktop if nothing more to support the software that they install on the system and to provide driver updates theses repos should be setup on the machines before shipping so that the users can get the driver updates quick and easy and offer driver on there for all the drivers that there are for dell machines that are support on linux not just the shipping lines

so that user might find that other machines then the ones you ship with ubuntu can easly be made into power ubuntu operating machines

As matt_d has said below, we have repositories for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora, Novell/SuSE Linux Enterprise Server, and a growing one for Ubuntu. Check it out here http://linux.dell.com.

Get GNU/Linux Machines in Retail Stores

Linux submitted by dpic Feb 14

Imagine how successful Dell's Ubuntu offering could be if just one Dell Ubuntu machine was put in retail stores. If people knew of an alternative to Windows, they would go for it! So what do you say, Dell? Why don't you try to put at least one of your Ubuntu machines offered in retail stores? 736 Comments »

Shield The Audio Lines

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by whatsthatthere 08/09/07

Business laptop users wear headphones at work. While the Intel HDA sound card reproduces sound very well, it is clear that Dell does not pay significant attention to the ridiculous amount of electrical interference noise in the headphone jack. The noise was so awful it gave me headaches, and almost led me to return an otherwise excellent laptop.

After one day using the laptop, I complained to a customer service representative who promptly shipped me a new motherboard. After replacing the motherboard in my 1-day old laptop, it is clear that the problem is a design flaw. The solution I found (aside from returning the unit) was to purchase a $25 USB sound card. A $1000 laptop should have better sound than a $25 USB sound card or a $50 mp3 player.

Please shield the headphone jack lines, and possibly route them away from the CPU and heatsink fan on the Vostro notebooks. Since business users most likely do use headphones at work, please improve the noise immunity of the headphone jack. As component manufacturers continue to strike a balance between high performance and low power, the electrical noise in a laptop will only rise higher. Please don't ignore this important aspect of the user experience. 4 Comments »

Offer an intermediate resolution on New 17" Inspirons (1680x1050)

Monitors and Displays, Sales Strategies submitted by benjesuit 06/25/07

WUXGA (1900x1200) is a huge jump from your next option of WXGA(1440x950).

What about WSXGA (1680x1050)? Perfect all around compromise between the two resolutions. And perfect for browsing, gaming, movies, etc.

@1900x1200, manhy web pages are hard to read because their fonts do not scale and they're designed for 800x600 or 1024x768. And who wants to zoom flash graphics all the time?

C'mon Dell. Even HP offers WSXGA on their 17" DV9500T. 8 Comments »

Make it easier for your customers to resell unwanted software you bundle.

Dell, Service and Support, Software submitted by jmxz 07/10/07

On a lot of our work computers you bundled a bunch of software that we don't want (antivirus software; multimedia software; and even Windows itself on many models).

Can you make it easier for us to re-sell the bundled software packages we don't want? One way you could make it easier is to include separate disks for each software package that has any resale value.

Note that there is a healthy market in used software licenses and some government customers prefer buying used software licenses since it's more affordable than new software licenses.

New Product Ideas, Vostro products submitted by ward733 07/30/07

One of the compitition has had this since p2 systems were introduced and still have it incorperated in there new systems. It is a Fn switchable white led monted on the lcd bezil that assists keyboard visibility in lower light situations . This light would also assist the web camera operation in lower light situations also..I'm sure it is patented for one but if you put two one on each side might allow for a new patent.. I've used this option and it really works well... 3 Comments »
