I have been using a used [another brand's] business laptop that has a high screen resolution. The cheaper Inspiron laptops can only go up to 1280x800. I cannot be productive on a screen that small any more. At least bump it up to 1440x900 or equivalent. I have basically been forced to shop in the Small Business section to find an affordable computer with a higher screen resolution.

It appears Dell remains afraid of Microsoft... and here is an answer we haven't heard from Dell on IdeaStorm:
"The top PC makers have so far treaded carefully. Dell's website sells Ubuntu computers in a separate section for open-source PCs, out of direct comparison with Windows machines. Dell spokeswoman Anne Camden said the placement reflects the fact that Linux is still not a mainstream consumer product."

Currently the same exact systems with the same specs are CHEAPER if you buy Windows. Why are we paying more money for a system that doesn't include a Windows license?
Systems with equal specs should be cheaper if they don't include Windows BY THE EXACT VALUE OF A WINDOWS OS!!
For example Vista Home Premium sells for $200, so if you compare a Vista Home computer and a Ubuntu computer with the same specs, the Vista Home system should cost $200 more.
I had to buy a Vista system, (throwing off Dell's numbers) and install Ubuntu myself (thus voiding my warranty!!).

I read a blog here somewhere in which the person made a great suggestion. Letting DELL owners get a $100 trade in value on their old machines to purchase new DELL machines. The blogger suggested the old machines be donated to overseas. I have a better idea. Resell the cleaned machines to American junior and senior high school students for $100. This will not only encourage DELL users to remain DELL users. It also encourages new customers as the students come to like DELL machines and tend to have brand loyalty. DELL could dedicate an entire online site to official used machines for students in much the same way Toyota has certified used previously owned vehicles. DELL could even offer affordable upgrade packages to go with the certified used machines.
As a highschool Algebra teacher, I enjoy giving my students access to on-line support and homework help. The students who are able to take advantage of this are making great strides. Unfortunately, many of my students cannot pay even $500 for a machine. They could scrape together $100 and the monthly service fee though.

I ordered a Inspiron 1520 and I am fed up with the issues:
crashed hard drive (first 6 days) (I will forgive this one, happens on every manufacturer, its just luck)
vibrating optical drive (shakes entire notebook, abnormal, new one fixed it)
Grainy Screen
Headphone Noise
Casing Defect (bulge in case seam, can see inside notebook)
I think that dell should instute a quality check system on the computers they ship out. Not just tests that can be run on the computer automatically, but a actual person physically inspecting/testing the function of the notebook such as:
- Grainy Screen/backlight bleed (go get a HP laptop and see the difference, go to the store)
- Headphone Noise
- Casing Defects
- Optical Drives that make too much noise
- squeaky keys
- and other issues that cannot be detected by a hardware check running on a CPU
If you do not have the finances to create such a program, then you can add the service as part of the warranty, with a garuntee that the devices that are checked will not have problems on arrival. (So therefore the QC is optional)
This will actually make/save money because people like me won't have to send their laptops back and forth wasting your shipping money/technician fee replacing parts that would be replaced anyway at the quailty check program.
you could also send a special survey to early-adopters to identify the biggest problems in a new computer line and check those at quailty check, certifying those parts free of defects.

Unfortunately at the moment the only way to get a high performance card in a 15.4 notebook is to buy the alienware m15x. However this notebbok has a few faults to portable users. Its heavy and its very thick. Not a thin frame 15.4 at all. Oh and lets not even start on the price...
So you know what im getting at here. According to ati's q1 and q2 2008 roadmap the mobility hd3870 will be available soon (end of q1 roughly).
This card is built using the RV670 die which produces less heat and uses less power compared to the nvidias current 8800gtx die which is basically a G92 desktop die. While a 8800gtx needs a seriously beefy cooling system the ati card shouldnt, therefore meaning with a bit of luck that it may fit in a more mainstream, smaller framed 15.4 laptop. The card may not be as powerful as nvidias rival 8800gtx equivalent, but it will still be able to easily play nearly all games with maxed detail bar a few dx10 games which it could still play at near high detail. Its a performance class 1 card and is way more powerful than a 8600m gt and a 8700m gt and is also the first dx10.1 laptop card along with the rest of the mobility hd 3000 series. It would only be behind the gtx cards in terms of performance but due to its heat efficiancy could be put in a mainstream laptop.
Also lets not forget that ati cards are ususally way cheaper than nvidia cards so theres a bonus as well!
JUST IMAGINE IT. PERFORMANCE CLASS 1 GAMING ALMOST ON A PAR WITH A GTX CARD IN THE M1530!!! WITH THIS CARD IT MIGHT JUST BE POSSIBLE!!!
So please dell, make it happen!

Centrino 2 for Latitude XT

Maybe if Dell put the Montevina (aka Centrino 2) into the Latitude XT and debut it at around $2200 it might be worth the price. The current system is running a platform that is nearly a year old at this point in time (March 16). They should also aim to release this product very soon after the Centrino 2 ship date. No point in waiting a full year again before people can buy it.
I think paying that kind of price for the old parts is a bit hard to swallow, business user or not. And believe it or not, probably the fastest growing segment of convertible tablet users is university/college students.
Whether the user needs the power or not should not be part of the equation when putting the system together, it's whether the end user sees value in the product. And a $1000 premium (over a similarly built Lenovo X61t) for a VERY fancy touchscreen that will be wonderful a year from now, is a too steep a price to pay to offset components that are a year old.

There is no reason why Dell cannot make all of the features of the Apple MacBook Pro available on the XPS of similar size. Some options that are missing from the XPS are:
Available Penryn processors (as of 03/18/2008).
512MB of memory on the 8600M GT video card.
LED backlit display.
Illuminated keyboard in low ambient light environments.
Quick-disconnect power connectors.
Notebook thickness should also match or better that of the MacBook pro. Also, consider illuminating the Dell logo on the cover as Apple does (using color instead of plain white) to give the XPS that "gotta have it" quality and a big image boost for Dell.

From my vantage point, I think Dell isn't competing with Apple enough. It's like letting the kids take cookies from the cookie jar, and the takers are Apple's new products and the cookies would be the customers from Dell.
MacBook Air, Apple's new weapon against Dell's XPS notebook product line, challenged Dell by its slim size, the weight, performance, and its wireless connectivity. Hopefully that got Dell a wake-up call. Apple introduced Air at the Keynote Address by Steve Jobs. Of course, Dell can compete easily by the cost, MacBook Air's start at $1799, but the cost of the $500 iPhone didn't stop costumers from buying it. Might be the same case here.

Dell! Create the first Dell Browser Computer!
Yes you read it right, I'll repeat it for those who have a tough time, Dell Browser Computer!
The computer will not have an OS or at least not an OS in the true sense of the word, yes it needs an underlying support system to prop up the Browser (using as many neutral words here to not lean on any side of the fence). Dell will construct this system to boot up and pop up a browser to interact with the computer world as seen by this computer. All interactions will be done solely through the browser, from surfing the net to accessing files which of course have to be browser compatible through addon's and special "Dell" provided services to process these files correctly.
So what do you do with this computer, well pretty much everything you do today but through the browser. Any service such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, file management, calculator will all be accessible via the browser, yet I know I didn't mention every possible app in the planet but this is an example so if your app isn't listed fill it in here ______. Dell will provide the services to these applications so Dell will get the customers's service from day one! New Browser App, well its accessible through the Dell service, lost the computer well don't worry your files are on the Dell storage server, just power up, update the computer go get your files as you had been doing previous to the crash, death of the other Browser computer. Yes all interaction with the Dell services will be Secure using the latest in Cryptography to satisfy even the CIA director and of course in regulation with the NSA (making sure to cover for any people who don't trust this) of course for out of the US sales those countries will have to set their requirements.
All in all its a win-win for both the Dell Customer and Dell, customers always get latest and greatest app and Dell reaps the rewards of supplying the service (and monthly service charge, wink wink).
Yes I probably left out a few wrinkles and intracaties but hey thats what the discussion to follow is for, right.

Re-design the internal parts so that everything is behind the screen … add a compartment to store a wireless Palm styled keyboard (since about 40 million people proficiently use that style of input device).
A disappearing sliding door would protect the (touch) screen.
An optional full-size keyboard could be plugged-in.
For increased ruggedness include a thick neoprene coating.
Make it available in various colors.
Call it a “Crossover”.

Being from India the below best fits the Indian Environment but parallels can be made for other places keeping in mind the key factors of the area in consideration.
The university that I know can provide this best education are:- 1] Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, USA [www.erau.edu <http: /> ] for its globally famous Engineering Physics degree. 2] INSEAD for its management degree [www.insead.edu] Here is how the project can be implemented in India 1] A call for all the students who are currently doing their engineering but have attempted the IIT-JEE can be called to local DELL office in place like Bangalore, Mysore etc., on weekend. The proof / document that the student needs to produce to enroll to become part of this project can be - IIT-JEE Registration Booklet OR - IIT-JEE Admit Card OR - IIT-JEE Performance Card Similar such criteria can be set for students in US, Australia & other places wherever DELL have their campus. 2] The student who becomes a part of this project can be provided with a Refresher / Foundation course until the CBSE 12th portion so as to make strong their basics for the world best education. The Refresher / Foundation course can be done in such a manner that it builds the entrepreneurship sprit in the student by allowing them to device or experiment with a method of learning that is being tested for its implementation at schools & other learning institutions across the world. Also a detailed list can be made consisting of data that tells the Social Welfare organization that any person in the neighborhood is associated to & the nature of work it does & the student who is a part of this project can have a short stint in them & see how DELL can help in their performing better when aided. This will not only ensure goodwill for DELL but also ensure that the grants made by DELL will be made the best use off.
The DELL FOUNDATION trustee paying monthly visit to all charitable foundation , NGO & healthcare units as well as some way to run down educational institution in the area [eg: visit the above mentioned places in Jayanagar] from where the students in Bangalore hail from will be of high benefit to DELL in the spread of Goodwill while creating a great impression on the minds of the people & give pride to the current people at DELL.

How about a Laptop with inbuilt FM Radio

This product is exclusively for Indian Market as the FM industry is in boom(nearly 7-8 FM radio channels are there in each city),they are entering to Tier II and Tier III cities.Pretty big players like Reliance and The Times Group is in this industry.So,i still have this doubt ,why Dell haven't come up with this idea,please specify the reasons
