6 major issues to be fixed by Dell

Dell, Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by jervis961 02/17/07

Dell became a top company by providing choice and customer service to a customer that wasn't available at the time but has since fallen behind the pack in these areas. Needing a translator when calling customer support is unnacceptable and other companies are rapidly passing Dell in technology advancements. While this site is a good start, many things need to be changed for Dell to become the market leader again.

1. Customer support needs to be in well spoken English and with employees who are allowed to do more than just read from a script. If they are speaking with a computer savvy customer the rep should be allowed to deviate from the script as long as they don't go outside the relm of normal policy.

2. Better options: Other companies offer high end components in small computers but Dell only supplies intel video processors in its 14" laptop. Dell needs to allow customers to get the size computer they need but with options from low cost through the high end so they can get a computer that is "Purely you".

3. Less forced options: I hate that I am paying for and XPS with internet security when I don't need it because I already have a subsciption that will transfer over or AOL is installed when I know I don't need it. They need to add an option of none of the above to all the added software sections.

4. Better pricing: Why is it over $200 to upgrade from 1 GB of 533 MHZ ram to 2 GB of 677 MHZ RAM? I can go to Crucial.com and get the 2GB 677MHZ kit for under $200. Upgrading with Dell after you own is even worse at over $300 this is crazy.

5. Custom Dell website: Customers want to feel special why not make a MYDELL website that when you log in you get a site designed the way you want it. If you aren't interested in the small business site it gets removed, you don't like to go thru the accessories sections when customizing a system so you don't see that section. Click on customer support and a list of your computer pops up asking which one you need help with and only shows the options for that system.

6. Customer loyalty rewards: I have bought 6 Dell systems over the last few years, why can't I get better customer service or pricing due to my loyalty to the company? 72 Comments »

Poor customer Service in Kazakhstan

Service and Support submitted by abuyz Feb 26

I am writting You to say that IN KAZAKHSTAN we have a lot of foreign companies who have to work with DELL, but only 2 Companies in all Country venture to deliver DELL products, and these two companies are dictating terms to Companies who must order DELL products here (high prices, high exchane rate to local curr, poor resolving problems while invoicing, no flexibility at all, when trying to agree varios terms and so on) These 2 companies are "ALSI" and "COMEL". Also top issue - NO even one SERVICE CENTER IN KAZAKHSTAN in these 2 Companies also.
Please DELL this issue.

Memory Speed

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by jamisonh 03/09/07

If I buy a computer where the processor will run 667mhz on the front side bus, why would Dell even consider selling me 533mhz memory? This even happens on models that don't even offer a 533FSB processor. 1 Comment »

Instant on PC

Desktops and Laptops submitted by hkeeter 02/20/07

I think its time for an instant on PC. With flash memory being so cheap, you could now put it on the motherboard and use it to hold OC and programs, and a hibernate image if needed. This would eliminate the bottleneck of the Hard Drive, and allow the Hard Drive to be optional as well. I have been waiting for this to happen for some time and I still do not see it being discussed much. Businesses would love this as they could then force files to not be stored locally on PCs and it would also help eliminate one of the biggest failure items in a PC. Am I missing something here technically? What do you think? 1 Comment »

Upgrade part is extremely expensive

Sales Strategies submitted by chzekhai 05/04/07

On weekly basis, I check latest hardware price on Internet. At the same time, I compare it with system that Dell offered. I always found that the price to upgrade processor, memory and hard disk is extremely expensive. This is totally disappointing and unacceptable. Please correct it in the future offering. Thanks. 1 Comment »

Don't Make Me Go Straight to Crucial after ordering

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies submitted by pepitoe 02/19/07

Memory prices are still ridiculous, and it is common knowledge that if you want more than the standard memory in a dell, you buy it elsewhere. If you priced it more competitively you might actually sell more. At the moment to upgrade from 1GB to 2GB in an Inspiron 9400 costs £211.50, the same from Crucial is £119.94 and you will have 1GB of Dells memory left to sell or whatever. 5 Comments »

Notebooks with 3 or 4 memory slots

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by fkr 05/11/07

2gb sticks of ram are insanely expensive for notebooks, the upgrade from 2gb to 4gb is some $1500.

Why not release notebooks that have 3 or 4 memory slots so an upgrade to 3 or 4gb is significantly more affordable? 2 Comments »

Sell systems with option of DDR3 system memory

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by jervis961 07/31/07

Dell currently sells computers that have graphic cards that use DDR3 memory while the main processor doesn't. Dell should start selling systems with the option of DDR3 system memory. 11 Comments »

Create a bargain gaming PC, "XPS Valueline"

Advertising and Marketing, Gaming, XPS products submitted by curvedinfinity Feb 22

Dell, I have an excellent idea for you to implement:

Create a gaming platform with the most cost-efficient parts available, that is mass produced in a single configuration to maximize amortization.

How it works:
Take a look at existing benchmarks and perform your own. Find the best performance-per-dollar gaming pc, with an emphasis on lower cost for any ties. Sell this "XPS Valueline" in only one configuration, so its cost is lowered further.

Here is an example "XPS Valueline" value gaming PC I've compiled:

The plain Inspiron chassis
Intel 2160
2GB RAM
Nvidia 8800 GT
320 GB HDD
------------------------------
$700
20" Monitor +$200
------------------------------
$900

I'd buy one as my next desktop if it came with Ubuntu... 12 Comments »

Offer 3 GB of memory as an option on ALL PCs!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by winoffice 10/13/07

On 32-bit versions of Windows Vista, the PC can address only 3 GB of memory. Therefore, what I would want Dell to do is to offer 3 GB of memory as an option (and CLEARLY specify whether the OS is 32-bit or 64-bit, and always let him get a 32-bit version for compatibility purposes). Another reason for my request for Dell to offer 3 GB is that the user might need more than 2 GB, but does not need 4 GB, regardless of what OS he might be running.

Fortunately, I can now get 3 GB as an option on the Dell XPS M1710. GREAT MOVE! Unfortunately, I cannot get 3 GB on any other system that I have been browsing today. Please offer 3 GB as an option for memory on all PCs, regardless of what operating system(s) are preinstalled. 7 Comments »

RAM TO THE MAX

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, XPS products submitted by ajmukon Feb 28

Many retail motherboards can support up to 8GB of DDR2-800 PC64000 RAM.

Why can't DELL motherboards do the same?

My suggestion:

Increase the upgradability of the RAM on all Desktops, and increase the upgradability of all XPS componants (IE: PSU, CPU, etc) 22 Comments »

I’d like to see them make a No Keyboard Laptop

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by doctorcox Feb 29

Re-design the internal parts so that everything is behind the screen … add a compartment to store a wireless Palm styled keyboard (since about 40 million people proficiently use that style of input device).
A disappearing sliding door would protect the (touch) screen.
An optional full-size keyboard could be plugged-in.
For increased ruggedness include a thick neoprene coating.
Make it available in various colors.
Call it a “Crossover”. 23 Comments »

Inspiron 15xx huge enourmous battery with 15+ hours on fullbright and full cpu utilization

Laptop Power submitted by jptech Feb 29

I just bought a 1520 with a 9 cell battery. 3.5 hours just isn't long enough.

I honestly don't care about size or weight. The battery could extend downward with feet on it to prop up the notebook to promote better cooling. 36 cells would be just fine. The battery would have its own charger port that plugs into the exisiting charger port as a pass through.

This is what I want. 6 Comments »

Get GNU/Linux Machines in Retail Stores

Linux submitted by dpic Feb 14

Imagine how successful Dell's Ubuntu offering could be if just one Dell Ubuntu machine was put in retail stores. If people knew of an alternative to Windows, they would go for it! So what do you say, Dell? Why don't you try to put at least one of your Ubuntu machines offered in retail stores? 736 Comments »

Easier way to OPT OUT of Dell selling my private information

Advertising and Marketing submitted by ninefoot3 10/17/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I rec'd a brochure yesterday saying Dell and DFS were going to share my private info with other 3rd party companies for marketing purposes. Well, it said that in about 5,000 words or so. At the end is a box stating that I may opt-out of this by calling the number listed or writing a letter (including certain info) and send it to the listed address.

I chose to use the phone method. After being shoved around to a few people, I finally got someone who could help me 'opt-out'. This involved 'opening a case' as if I had a technical issue with my account.

My IdeaStorm suggestion, hey Dell, make it easier for us to OPT-OUT of your attempts to make money off of my personal information. What's the matter? Didn't make enough money off of my patronage to Dell products and the interest rates charged? Getting an extra $1 for my name, address and age information going to help Michael Dell get a new boat? C'mon!

While I'm disturbed that Dell wanted to sell me out, I'm more disturbed that Dell made it difficult for us to opt-out. A simple URL would have been nice. I know, that would make more people opt-out and Dell would have less names to sell. It's like a mail-in-rebate or the lack of a cancel button in the account information at freecreditreport.com, you HAVE to call, and since that's a pain in the neck, most people will sloth themselves into something they don't really want. 42 Comments »

Make XP/Linux drivers available for all model even if only Vista is pre-installed

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Operating Systems submitted by vineets001 09/24/07 **REVIEWED**

There are good hardware models coming out. And only Vista is pre-install option. If people want to wipe off Vista and install XP or Linux, let them do that. Make a commitment to have the drivers available.

We're working on having drivers for the hardware we ship more widely available. Click here to learn more from john_h.

List Power Details when configuring a computer

Desktops, Sales Strategies, Servers and Storage submitted by rotthund 10/15/07

When ponding the power consumptions of a CRT vs LCD display, I saw the Dell confiugation doesn't list a desktop's power supply details, nor it's typical power consumption. Monitor specs list those details. List those details on Dell computers, and show the estimated effect the configuration has on the computer's power details. 5 Comments »

Biodegradable Packing material

Environment submitted by ewagnerjr2000 04/19/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

When I received my 32" lcd screen it had an extremely large amount of Styrofoam. Dell is working to be environmentally friendly, maybe they should consider a better packing material at least one that will biodegrade.

Goal: Dell FREEDOM Box - A Fully Open System for Home Users by 2010

Dell, Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dpic 11/29/07

Set a goal of having at least one fully open system for home users by the end of 2010! This would be Dell's greatest endeavor yet!

The Dell FREEDOM Box | From the software, all the way down to the hardware, a completely open system

Software:
* A fully open source operating system with no restricted software like Gobuntu.

Hardware:
* All hardware must follow these rules--
1. The interface to the hardware must be explicitly made public, so the hardware can be used freely.
2. The design of the hardware must be made public, so that others can implement it and learn from it.
3. The tools used to create the design should be free, so that others can develop and improve the design.

This movement is already making headway and progress will continue to increase. Dell is already getting involved--

It has been stated that Dell has a goal to have open Linux drivers for all Dell products. Dell, keep the pressure on your vendors to open up!

Support OpenBIOS and Open Firmware!
"Among its features, Open Firmware provides an instruction set independent device interface. This can be used to boot the operating system from expansion cards without native initialization code.

It is Open Firmware's goal to work on all common platforms, like x86, AMD64, PowerPC, ARM and Mips. With its flexible and modular design, Open Firmware targets servers, workstations and embedded systems, where a sane and unified firmware is a crucial design goal and reduces porting efforts noticeably."

Already, there is huge support for replacing proprietary BIOS
- http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/62549/LinuxBIOS_instead_of_proprietary_...
And there is the Open Graphics Project
- http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/72320/Help_The_Open_Graphics_Project<

This project would put Dell at the heart of the movement bringing Freedom, Reliability, and Innovation to the world of technology! Does one really need to ask why this would be better than proprietary technology?

Submit hardware specifications to the Linux Driver Project

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux submitted by upstaked 10/05/07 **REVIEWED**

Back in January kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman from Novell started a project offering companies free Linux driver development.

This proved so successful that Novell made it his full-time job and turned to a project with over 200 kernel developers: http://www.linuxdriverproject.org/ .

So Dell, submit specs and convince your hardware providers to do so too. I want to spend my money on great new hardware that runs on Linux.

We constantly work with our hardware partners to develop and maintain open-sourced drivers. Also, we make it clear that through their own developers (or other projects like the Linux Driver Project) they need to deliver on drivers.
