ReactOS

Operating Systems submitted by fireball 03/07/07

There have been a number of ideas for offerings computers with some flavour of Linux preinstalled, and that's great. But, there are customers, who would still want to have benefits of Windows (still the majority of software applications are targeted at Win32 API and .NET Framework, not to speak about drivers for various consumer devices).

Would DELL be interested in supporting a project aimed at creating a compatible implementation of Windows (the same architecture, API and ABI), but under a GPL license?

This would sound crazy if it's to be done from scratch, but we already spent quite some time for development and even came up with a few releases (they are more like proof of concept, not usable at the moment for preinstalling on PCs).

Dell should use silver-zinc batteries: safer, longer-lasting and can be recycled

Environment, Laptop Power submitted by jervis961 03/31/07

"Zinc Matrix Power rechargeable batteries deliver up to twice the runtime of traditional Li-ion batteries. They also have an aqueous chemistry that is not flammable or toxic. As a result of the inherent safety, silver-zinc batteries are not subject to airline restrictions. Furthermore, the key components of silver-zinc battery technology can be 100% recycled and reused, making it an environmentally conscious alternative to many existing battery technologies."

Recovery Hard Drive partitions are not needed, other solutions are better

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by carganegativa18 04/22/07

When I ordered my laptop, I selected the 120 HD, thinking it would be enough for my school work and photography. To my surprice when the laptop arrived, I only had 85 gigs available. I then took a look at "my computer" and wala, there it was

1. A ten gig partition for Recovery purpuses:
Althoug there are times when one really needs to have a computer back to its factory setting, I think its unfar that the user has to give up 10 GB of disk storage.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION
1. Give the consumer a DVD of the recovery ISO,
2. Give the consumer the option, either have it installed or have a DVD for it, I rather pay for DVD, than pay for a larger HD.

2. There are tons of pre-installed software that takes up huge amounts of disk space. Some of that stuff we don't need it, and sometimes we dn't know how to get that software out of our systems.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION
1. Ship installations CD's to consumers, and let the consumer deside which software they want to install. Hence allowing consumer enjoy more HD space.

2. Advice the consumer when they are buying the laptop/pc of how much "possible" available HD is going to be available upon arrival of laptop. Had I known I was only going to have 85 gigs left, I would have gotten a bigger HD.

I hope this gets promoted, and I hope that many people feel the same way, that we want what is adverticed (120 gigs, not 85 when the laptop arrives) 21 Comments »

Respect of the EULA terms (refund of OS)

Operating Systems submitted by grosguillaume 02/19/07

On every EULA from Windows OS, it's clearly write that a consumer who disagree with the term of the EULA contract can be refunded, but it's not possible with Dell's computer. 19 Comments »

Have publicly available torrents/ISOs of all driver and media discs

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Software submitted by remover 06/15/07 **NOT NOW**

As a former dell technician and now computer repair shop technician, I frequently encounter Dell machines where there driver disc is missing and or out of date. Having worked on the phones I know it's not cheap for Dell to keep these in stock and to keep shipping them out.

My suggestion: use a free peer to peer download system to distribute these discs. BitTorrent. It's free and simple to set up. Along side the torrents you could have ISOs ready for download if the person is unfamiliar with BitTorrent.

While the most common consumer may not be able to utilize it to full effectiveness, it gives local technicians and either knowledgeable users or friends of the less-than-knowledgeable users will have access to the most up to date disk images.

Just my two cents.

Dell... Offer Faster RAM!

Sales Strategies submitted by incubus240 Jan 20

Dell needs to offer faster RAM (i.e. If the FSB on the laptop is 800Mhz then match with 800Mhz RAM rather than 667Mhz RAM). I always have to buy the minimum amount of RAM for the system and end up throwing it away. They charge me $350 for 2GB of 667Mhz then I turn around and purchase 4GB of 800Mhz for $130. Since they make you buy at least 2GB... it is such a waiste! 7 Comments »

Protect the LCD screens

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by vardanian Jan 21 **ALREADY OFFERED**

I have an idea of protecting LCD screen with overlaying transparent plastic, to make it more durable and scratch resistant. By the way this screen can be made removable. so the refreshment won't be expensive. I know that this can make laptop a little bit heavier. But this can be an option and a good help for those who uses laptop actively.

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/17/07

Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)

OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as:
- Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections!
- Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls
- Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others
&nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM]
- PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program
- Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing
- Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player
- Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System

Pre-installed quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. Cast your vote for Linux and other free software. Cast your vote for the Universal Education PC [ed: article removed/merged by dell_admin] utilizing free software.

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Make a calendar with all COMING SOON and IN PROGRESS ideas

Advertising and Marketing, IdeaStorm submitted by krasmussen 09/22/07 **REVIEWED**

One of the biggest annoyances with IdeaStorm is that the horizon for an idea being implemented is very blurry, if at all existing. If you're lucky, you get "third quarter 2009", but mostly, there is no timeframe at all. This leads to the feeling that not much is being done, and exactly that feeling is what IdeaStorm should be eliminating.

Therefore, I propose that you make a list or calender with all the COMING SOON and IN PROGRESS ideas with timeframes for all of them. Just a "december 2008" would be nice, or better yet, "deadline 31st november 2008".

I don't know if this is connected with some goal management inside Dell, if it is, maybe you should work on improving that, too?

Today, the best way to know the progress of an idea is through Ideas in Action, our Weekly Update or Dell comments in the thread.

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Use magsafe power connectors

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

Linux Hardware Compatibility List

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by s3indiana 02/20/07 **IN PROGRESS**

Create a listing of Dell hardware that's compatible with the major Linux distributions (Fedora, OpenSuse, ubuntu, Freespire) providing compatibility with not just systems (desktops and laptops) but include peripherals (printers, camera's, flash drives, compatible routers, etc.). Include levels of compatibility so the reviewer can make an educated choice. This would provide the greatest assistance for those looking at alternatives...

We're working to add something like this to our linux.dell.com wiki. Click here to see what john_h has to say.

Fix your chat wait times. 20 minutes is unacceptable!

Service and Support submitted by baylor921 02/16/07 **REVIEWED**

For an internet company, your organization acts like it just entered the online market. Chatting with agents is the way of the future and waiting 20 minutes for a rep is terrible service. Especially for people who have an XPS or a $5000 workstation model.

I've gotten much quicker service at other internet businesses.

Thanks for the allowing my input.

We are committed to handling chat requests in a timely manner. Most times of the day, a customer should be greeted by an agent within one minute.

External PCIe x16 for laptops

Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by pdonket 02/16/07

With the arrival of the new ASUS XG gaming station, it would need some alteration...but something to think about is that dell starts putting PCIe x16 on the outside of laptops, like an express card slot. Then creates a dock station for desktop graphic cards. This is in my opinion a great idea for a gamer who also would love mobility. For example, say in a M1210, even the top graphics option is not exactly a power house due to size constraints. Well with this system, when you need mobility you simply un-tether the station for the GPU, and re-tether to game at home. 1 Comment »

How Better To Process All Ideas Submissions

IdeaStorm submitted by googideas 02/16/07

I think you know you are going to get tens of thousands of ideas/posts. You might want to buffer the immediacy of the postings.

It will allow you to filter out or dump posts which have nothing to do with the intent of this site.

It will force you to vet ideas which might be of great worth to you, without a any hint of them getting "out there".

You might want to put a spell check feature on here to help avoid us having to read posts with many typos.

You might want to change your terms and conditions by adding the following condition:

"In rare cases Dell reserves the right to waive its own terms and conditions for the purpose of negotiating a purchase or other contract or otherwise secure the IP to the idea."
(you might be missing out on some great opportunities by discoiuraging the revelation of them.)

Nominate a third-party like a KPMG to act as a go-between for those instances when an idea from an individual attracts your interest. In other words, implement faciliatory procedures so that you can become truly entrepreneurial (no slight meant here whatsoever but let's face it, big business does not understand how to attract ideas and new business as well as it could be done).

Ideas are going to be the currency of tomorrow so it is a good plan to prepare yourselves for exchanging this currency. An Ideas Division staffed by generalists will enable the true out-of-the-box generation of ideas.

Sometimes it is the Uneducated who by the nature of their lacvk of knowledge is able to freely ask the questions which promote discovery. Often the experts are too close to the subject matter to free up their heads.

New Dell Retail Store! Death to Mall Kiosks!

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies submitted by evilspell 02/16/07

Dell should open a retail store very similar to the Apple store. I know that they have small kiosks inside malls that they try to sell Plasma TV's and a couple laptops next to a guy selling knock off sunglasses and verizon cell phone sales sharks! Very unprofessional. Open a classy Dell Store and offer Tech support right in the store just like the Genius Bar in the Apple Store. 144 Comments »

Work with Industry Leaders

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by baylor921 02/16/07

Your company should work closer with industry leaders to develop specialized products. For example, the medical industry is ripe for product development. Instead of waiting to find out how your customers use your products, you should co-develop products that fulfill the needs of the customer. Not paying attention to product usage is one thing the company needs to correct. Comment »

Why not catch the new wave of IP Phones to add to your product lines?

New Product Ideas submitted by skypefone68 02/16/07

Dear Mr Dell,

I am the founder of IPFONES, a leading manufacturing company specializing in IP Phones devices.

As you probably have heard and seen, all the major brands are already fighting to catch onto next generations’ voice communications devices which will all be IP based.

Cisco and Apple is fighting for the name of IPHONE itself as both of them are realizing how important IP phoning will be the next hottest thing to do as the world is tearing down its borders.

Every company is looking to catch on to VOIP and trying to find a way to lure in the revenues that VOIP can bring from a service or from a hardware supplier.

Skype is the most successful at it and the growth has been most incredible.
We believe we have a good name that will take advantage of individuals, corporations wanting to change over their voice communications devices.

It's IPFONES... Pronounced IP :Phones...

Here is a video that tells you a bit of how we marketed ourselves till

http://www.ipfones.com/us/content/view/18/9/< do not have the marketing power nor the resources as CISCO does but we are definitely very confident our name will survive the test of time.

Here is an article that would give us confirmation of that:
http://www.slashphone.com/115/5962.html< cell phone manufacturer in the world is also moving toward making their cell phone VOIP enabled.

Right now, we know there are over 2 billion cell phones users year and that number can only exponentially grow as emerging continents are all un-tapped territories. Imagine every renewed cell phone alone will be IP Enabled... We certainly do hope it will be an ipfones.

I would like to suggest to you as Founder and visionary of DELL, to look into maybe having a division that would tap into this new opportunity.

I know you have just hired an Ex-Motorola Mobile Executive for your top global sales. What a serendipitous "god sent" decision for this IPFONES suggestion don't you think?

If you would have any thoughts to this letter, please do get back with me at the below contacts.

Sincerely and respectfully yours,

Thomas B.
