BLACK backlit keyboard for Dell XPS M1730
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by lorax1284
08/31/07
I know there are threads asking for Backlit keyboards: many of them merged into one.
Dell is introducing a backlit keyboard in the XPS M1730. Super.
But it's white-ish colour contrasts badly with the case.
Other comments about how "fugly" the XPS M1730 have been mitigated by the appearance of better photos (mostly with the screen / lid closed!) so maybe the outside of the M1730 case will be just fine... but that white backlit keyboard is a non-starter: opening the lid for the first time will be like seeing a beautiful stone along the forest trail, only when you pick it up, underneath is gross things crawling over other grosser things.
Consider this a backpedal from my "I'll wait for the XPS redesign" idea, cuz it's starting to look like I really only have to wait for Dell to source a black backlit keyboard.

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood
08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.
Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Just say "Thank You" to all Dell Employees and Mean it.
Service and Support submitted by robert

Dell had a great turnaround quarter and made some amazing and positive changes, at a rapid fire pace. Now is the time to just say, "Thank You" for a job well done during tough times to "all" Dell employees...and mean it. A simple, thank you, goes a long way. Stock options are great, but a thank you gets people to climb the next mountain. In Dell's case, that mountain is pretty high. Dell must recognise the people that will make the company number one again.
At the same time, it is time to weed out the malcontents that will disrupt long term success. Dell has no room at this time for employees that are not firmly behind the company.

15.4 size XPS system
XPS products, Laptops submitted by lilredfoxie
02/16/07 **IMPLEMENTED**
I think theyre needs to be another 15.4" size XPS system, currently the XPS lineup has no middle ground, theres either the m1210 which is too small, or the m1710 which is too large ( I dont count the m2010, since its not really a laptop, its more of its own hybrid desktop/laptop comptuer thing) use the e1505 chassis, give it the cool XPS lights, and a D-dock connectior below Check out the Idea in Action post for details about our new 15in system.

Next-Day-Delivery On Parts & Upgrade Products
Service and Support submitted by aikiwolfie

I'd like to see Dell implement a Next-Day-Delivery program for upgrade parts and consumables. I've recently just ordered two additional hard drives. The on-line tracking system tells me they won't arrive until the end of the week.
Personally I think this is a bit ridiculous when you consider some companies can build and ship and entire PC in that time scale.

Dell had better "leak" info about the 17" M1330 quick...
Monitors and Displays, New Product Ideas, Sales Strategies submitted by lorax1284

Both the Precision M6300 and XPS M1730 lack both the technological advancements and industrial design of the M1330.
Neither are suitable options for me, the enthusiast power user, willing to pay for a 'no compromises' desktop replacement notebook.
The lack of LED backlit screen on the two new models, the port placement / no port replicator on the M1730 and the 'retro styling' of the Precision M6300 underwhelm.
If either HP or Toshiba get their act together and produce a 17" Santa Rosa notebook that's got the right combination of features, looks, and power, my fourth notebook purchase will be the first that's not a Dell.
But if I heard that a 17" M1330-style machine was in the pipe... I just might have to hold off on making my buying decision just yet.
While I'm at it, here is the ultimate feature set: * Thin LED backlit screen a-la M1330 * Powerful CPUs in Santa Rosa-based CPU, with an eye to the new 45 nm chips coming out in 2008 * Full keyboard WITH numeric keypad a-la I1720 * optionally backlit keyboard (not my big thing, personally) * powerful GPU options with Dual-Link support for resolutions > 1920 x 1200 * Non-Slot-Loading optical disk drive (I personally think slot-loading is one more mechanical failure possibility) * HDMI or DVI + VGA outputs * FireWire port (for connecting those Digital Video cameras) * LOTS of USB ports: at least 6, 8 would not be excessive * eSATA port(s) * Gigabit wired ethernet * modem option (if not built-in) * MOST PORTS ON BACK OF MACHINE. ESPECIALLY VIDEO, NETWORK, POWER, eSATA, USB. * ExpressCard Slot * SD / MMC / xD slot * Side ports for USB / card reader / ExpressCard * Wireless A + B + G + N (upgradable to final N standard when ratified) * Bluetooth * Sure, go ahead and offer an SSD hard drive, I guess you could offer them on any notebook now. * Decent sound system (multi-channel audio outputs via dongle if needed, to get analog surround sound out of the thing!) * Choice of Win XP / Vista / No Os / Ubuntu / Linux * DOCKING STATION, hopefully for the standard D/Dock * if it can be thin like the M1330, great, but I'm more about capability, power, and style, and I accept that a 'desktop replacement' won't necessarily be thin and light
I don't think there's anything listed there that's impossible to cram into a single 17" machine, I don't think there's anything in this list that enthusiast / power users would NOT want: besides, there are other inspiron / latitude / XPS / precision / vostro notebooks available to meet other needs.
I'd pay $500 more for this machine than a comparably equipped M1730, for the style, port-placement and advanced LCD alone.

Backlit Desktop Keyboard
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by jok3r
09/06/07
Hey,
When I play games, I like to play in the dark- because it lets me concentrate on the screen.
The annoying thing about that is that I have to try and touch type- which I'm not very good at- because I haven't got a lamp or anything. (And no, I don't really want to go out and get a lamp- I'm a bit stubborn :P)
What I'm suggesting is a keyboard such as:
http://www.logicapproach.com/images/A-LG.jpg
With some media buttons added in and a blue light coming through the letters and around each key. I like the feel of these types of keyboards, but I can't afford the expensive one's- Logitech G15 etc.
Thanks.

More detailed hardware specs when building a computer
Service and Support, Desktops and Laptops submitted by bbr

Like a number of other users, i like to mix and match a system, but with the ease of a system put together by dell.
Show per component what the detailed specs are. So we know what we're getting, perhaps there are equal quality components, for a lower price available, perhaps users want different hardware.
I could see this being difficult however, since you could go to a hardware store, buy 1500 Euros worth in loose components and end up with a computer equal to a 2000 euro dell system. More detailed component specs however will never hurt anyone though. what's the refresh time of the monitor, size and manufacturer of the HD, buffer, ram size, bus speed, clock speed of the video card. etc.

Make Linux and no Operating system standard options on all future products
Operating Systems submitted by jervis961
08/17/07 **REVIEWED**
OK Dell you have committed to supplying Linux options in limited form. Since you have laid the groundwork already here is the next step. Every new product you release that needs an Operating system should have Linux and also no Operating System as an option in the configuration along side Windows. Since you have to write drivers and test compatability for Vista when making a new product just make it compatable with Linux at the same time. There will no longer be a need for a seperate sections for Linux or no Operating system since all of the products will have the option. this will help make your site easier to navigate for you customers. You can also create an ACCURATE help me choose section for the OS choices.
Check out what daniel_j has to say on the options we offer.

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM
Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript
08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself. On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...
It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.
thanks =D
PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

Smaller Power Bricks

I know they've gotten smaller with the new line of inspirons, but lenovo's are still something to be rivaled. What is the point of having a thin/light laptop and a heavy power brick you have to carry around with it?

KEYBOARDS and TOUCHPADS Enhancements
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by labtroll

Fancy keyboards. A nice plus on laptops and desktops!
Some possible keyboards for both laptops and desktops: 1)BACKLIT Like the Mac Pro (Great when working in low light... not everyone can type without looking) 2)LCD/OLED Customizable Keys (even if its just a few for custom keys and launching)
Touchpad: 1) Back-Lit Touchpad (LCD and customizable would be the best!) 2) Vista's handwriting recognition is great (one of the few features I felt really improved) Touchpad area can double as writing pad with special pen.
I Will pay extra for it!
Lastly: Combine keyboard and Touchpad for the Media center keyboards! no space.. leave the keypad out and use a touchscreen keypad/touchpad combo. Expensive... so are the High end Media Centers. What's an extra $50-$75 for a real media center keyboard.

Dual-Monitor portables
Monitors and Displays submitted by lucas_johnston

I'd like to see a portable system with a stacked LCD available, so that I could slide out a second screen from behind the first - either left or right, or to the top.
There would be software that would automatically configure the desktop according to the physical orientation of the second LCD. The extra LCD should power off when it is stored, and should only engage when it is completed extended.
The extra screen should snap into place when extended, with a mechanical release mechanism to release it. when released, it should require some effort to slide back into the system, so that a top-extended LCD does not collapse back into its storage bay - if this is not possible, then top extension should not be made avaialble.
there should be a locking mechanism as well, so that in its locked position, the LCD cannot be removed from storage.
