Participate in the product design process! Dell is using IdeaStorm to decide between two new product design concepts. Vote on your favorite and weigh in to tell us what you think. When we unveiled the XPS 710 H2C at CES this year, we also uncovered it. There were a limited number of systems sprinkled throughout the show floor that had a clear side panel allowing easy viewing of the patent-pending two-stage H2C liquid cooling system. Since then, more than a few people have suggested we offer a “panel with a view” as an option for our XPS 710 line. Now we need you to vote for one of these two options and, most importantly, share some reasons why you like it. This “Now You Choose” vote campaign will be open from Wednesday, April 25 to Friday, May 11. The design that gets the most votes will be featured in a future generation of XPS gaming desktops.

Better Service Tag Placement... Or Stickers!

Dell should provide a way to assist customers find their service tag easier. I know that the computer has software that can show the customer their service tag, but, sometimes all I want to do is just "see" it.
Possibly better placement, either on the free space above the keyboard on a laptop... or on top of a tower for a desktop....
A great idea is a set of stickers customers could place anywhere they want for easy access!!!

The Clutter Is Forming: We Need A Moderator

Approximately 48 hours into its life, and Ideastorm is filling up with repetition and senseless comments. Since moderation cannot be exercised by the participants a moderator a la Dell Employee must put up her hand. Or his hand. We aren't picky!
One: Repeating the same ideas from earlier posts is a pain to the reader and a waste of space and time. These should be removed.
Two: Suggestions which are without applicability to the issues at hand should be removed: one post states that "Dell should set up Dell Pay to compete with Paypal." Sigh. Why?
For what unique purpose? Dell's business is not online payments, in the same way Apple's is not selling music (they sell music at a loss to sell iPods at a gain). There is no benefit to Dell and it meets no need.
Since this format is experimental and fully funded by Dell, I encourage Dell to cut the wheat from the chafe and remove as much as they see fit. For all of the "I have rights" and "freedom of speech" advocates, you don't. This is a place where the good keep going and the bad go out.
The less posts the better. It provides Dell what they want: the opportunity to test strong ideas properly. Without the removal of clutter, the good ideas will by dint of the time they are posted (e.g. 3am) and the increasing volume of posts, inevitably suffer at times the forest's size despite the grandeur of the tree in question.
I may be going against the grain of popular opinion, but you add your vote to this post if you believe in the goal of this site, and not the freedom it offers to utter the first inane thing which comes to mind.

OS options - Keep XP

As long as M$ continues to support XP it should remain an option for system builds. Dell has done a good job of telling people when the system they've configured, in the order process, doesn't work for compatibility reasons and currently XP can run on most (if not all) Vista configurations.
This also applies to Linux flavors... Some focus on hardware and user experience that others don't. The more operation system options available the greater the chance a customer will buy the system they've configured.

Better India support is better than poor US support.

It's not the case that all offshore tech support is bad.
There are some *excellent* tech support individuals in India - they're just not necessarily the cheapest.
People complain about language skills? I've talked to one support company there that trains their reps to not only speak without an Indian accent - but to be able to speak each of British and Southern/Texas and generic-American accents flawlessly - and to adjust their accent to match that of their caller.
People complain about technical skills? I've talked to Indian engineers who could explain the most complex details of computer driven medical equipment as well as the US employees who worked on the systems.
If you go to India for the purpose of getting *BETTER* tech support than the US for the same dollar, I'm all for it. On the other hand, the strategy of going to India for the purpose of providing poor tech support for much cheaper - you've already learned the hard way that that doesn't work. On the other hand, if you try to get the cheapest US-based support (as many ideastorm posters are suggesting) I'm sure you could find poor support here too. For what it's worth, though, I've had good luck and good experiences with your India support team.

Celine Dion, Coca Cola and Microsoft

When I buy an CD player, thankfully, it does not come with big stickers all over it saying 'Designed for listening to Celine Dion', and 'LG Recommends Celine Dion'.
Not only would I not play Celine Dion music, but I wouldnt buy an LG player if it had these stickers on them either - out of principal.
What exactly does Dell gain by plastering 'Dell recommends Windows Vista' adverts all over its products and website ? Recommend it for what ? You DO understand that those adverts are offensive to some people ? You do understand that you are alienating a section of your potential market ?
Dell must receive some monetary reward for providing this advertising - so why stop there ?
Lets include some more paid-for advertising on the Dell web site. How about 'Dell recommends that users drink Coca Cola' ? that might bring in a decent subsidy.
There is big money in religion these days as well - so why not sell that out to the highest bidder as well ? 'Dell recommends pentacostal christianity' might be a good start .. unless those oil rich saudis are willing to chip in and replace it with 'Dell recommends that all users convert to Islam'
Lets see a 'Dell recommends Celine Dion' sticker on the CD drive then, and rake in the advertising revenue. At least when things get that stupid, the average punter will be able to read your existing 'Dell recommends Windows Vista' adverts in the right context.

I have a XP Pro retail copy, will soon buy retail vista, I also like Linux: Make WINDOWS-FREE, and OS-Free an option for more than just expensive business lines.
Dell has systems available that do not have an OS pre-loaded called N-Series line. You can check them out at www.dell.com/nseries.

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)
OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.
Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as:
- Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections!
- Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls
- Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others

Offer easy multi-boot options with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or NO Windows (yes, Linux can entirely replace Windows!)
Offer trade-ins and Linux CDs for older model Dell PCs. Cast your vote for the mini Linux Dell PC and the Universal Education Dell PC, both utilizing free software.
Would you try Linux if it were this easy?
