Put All Case Stickers on the Underside of Notebooks & Bottom of Desktops

Desktops and Laptops submitted by reg 06/11/07

Stickers and case badges make a PC look cheap.

Stick the stickers on the Underside - yes still there - close by the Serial Number for Notebooks and under by the feet on a desktop or tower.

Do you see stickers all over the more stylish notebooks from japan or stuck all over Apple products? No.

Stop 'Tagging' our machines like some two bit punk graffiti artist.

Downloadable, PDF format, full technical specs for all systems

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site submitted by benjesuit 06/12/07 **REVIEWED**

Before I buy, I would like to have the options of downloading the full technical specifications of the system. Not just the brief specifications. Place a link under "tech specs" tab that allows you to view or download the full specification PDF file for those of us who care about and understand such things. This way everyone is satisfied.
We are looking to improve the specs pages by making them consistent across all product lines, provide more in-depth specifications and making them available in a printable format.

Same discounts available on Ubuntu and Windows

Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by jonsmirl 06/12/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I'm ordering a Vista XPS 410 right now. I wanted a Ubuntu one but I'm going to throw away yet another copy of Windows. The Vista XPS 410 has $200 off today and free ship for a total of $869. The identical Ubuntu machine is $1019 plus $29.99 shipping. So today Ubuntu costs $170 more than Windows instead of $50 less. Why can't I have the same discounts on the Ubuntu machine? 50 Comments »

XPS Laptops - The Next Generation

XPS products submitted by rkolling 07/12/07

With the XPS M1330, it looks like Dell is in the process of redoing the XPS series and creating unique platforms rather than optioning up basic Inspiron or Latitude platforms. Given the Insipron, Vostro, Latitude, and Precision lines, I hope Dell really tries to make the XPS laptop line a unique, definitive, state-of-the-art statement. The cachet would provide a halo effect for the other Dell products as well.

I hope Dell offers a light weight 15.4” (well under 6 lbs) or a light 17” (at less than 7 lbs.) form factor XPS. It would be good if such machines could combine magnesium and carbon fiber construction to achieve light yet robust construction. I like the roll cage approach used by Lenovo in the lids to their ThinkPad models since it gives the wireless device antennas good access to the wave stream while affording light weight and strength. While the gamers may like 17”, I find the 15.4” travels easier and is also easier to open up and use on an airplane flight than a 17”.

I would opt for a premium, LED-lit, 1920X1200 WUXGA screen driven by a top of the line Nvidia 8700 series video card with 512 MB (or more) of RAM that can play HD content from a Blue Ray drive as well as games. Hopefully the screen would have great brightness, color gamut, contrast and response time. The high water mark in laptop screens seem to be the Sony’s. I hope Dell can equal or exceed that mark.

I like the way the M1330 includes various ports and jacks such as dual headphone jacks. To the M1330’s port layout I would add 2 more USB ports and a dual link DVI port to drive the Dell 3007 series of 2560X1600 displays when hooked up directly (as well as via the docking station).

The CPU should have 4 GB of RAM with Vista and hopefully Dell can twist Intel’s arm to offer a Santa Rosa 7700G CPU that can be overclocked. The 7600G in the XPS M1710 can be easily overclocked to 2.83 GHz with negligible impact on battery life or fan noise. Anything over 2.83 was a very different story, however. 2.83 represents a .5 GHz increase over the stock 2.33, a substantial 20+% increase. I of course would like the computer with the Intel draft-N wireless and the internal cell phone network wireless cards as well as with Blue Tooth and gigabit ethernet.

I would suggest a 64 GB SSD option – 32 GB can be a little skimpy with today's applications and voluminous files. This should lower weight, increase battery life and eliminate a typical laptop point of failure – the hard drive. Perhaps a package could be offered with both the SSD plus a conventional 7200 rpm hard drive. The conventional hard drive could be deployed inside the machine, ideally, along with the 64 GB SSD and then removed when not desired or needed. Alternatively, the conventional hard drive could be swapped for the SSD or also connected to the laptop via an adaptor through a USB port to perform back-up, offloading of unneeded files or downloading needed files to the SSD.

That’s my $.02. 6 Comments »

Standardized Full Spec Sheet for all computers

Dell Web Site submitted by blackbelt 07/12/07

Please standardize the specification sheet available on the website, please include it in an easy access PDF format instead of having to wade through flash advertising copy and include DETAILED information such as motherboard chipset/manufacturer, CPU details, RAM specs (cache, latency etc) and manufacturer, sound chipset, bios, hard drive type/speed/manufacturer, number of fans & sizes, case construction materials, etc. I don't like buying a computer where most of the parts are a mystery.
Sure not everyone needs to know, but for the geeks it is important information to determine the quality of the build. 2 Comments »

Dell submitted by blackbelt 07/12/07

virtualize the OS

Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by mieslep 07/12/07

Sell me a desktop/notebook whose host OS is a small and hugely locked-down Linux kernel whose whole purpose in life is to host one (or more) virtual machines.

Then, separately, sell me one (or more) VM images with a wide range of software mixes. So, one VM might be Vista + Office Ultimate + Norton AV, another might be XP Pro + Open Office, etc. You could come up with hundreds of combinations here because you don't need to manage all the drivers associated with the OS.

Finally, sell me a service to manage all those licenses for me. 7 Comments »

Linux Linux Linux, ok now that ive got your attention, Integrated FM transmitter for notebooks.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Laptops submitted by chewd 07/12/07

Why not offer an integrated FM transmitter for notebooks? Theres no good solution to the problem of tiny speakers in notebooks sounding like crap. If we had FM transmitters in our notebooks we could just use any FM radio as our speakers. Radios are everywhere, its a no-brainer really. It wouldnt add much cost to the machine (my USB FM transmitter cost me $30), It wouldnt require any drastic redesigning of the machine and would add a TON of flexibility. And it would work in linux!

Nobody offers this option yet, ive checked, Dell would be the first to offer this incredibly useful feature, why you could even patent it & then charge all the other manufacturers royalties when they start adding it to their machines. And it would work in linux!

I use the griffin FM rocket, it works up to about 30 feet away, doesnt interfere with wifi singals, and sounds great on the car stereo. It doesnt work in linux, as it acts as a USB soundcard & nobodys bothered writing linux drivers for it. Ive tried others that simply plug into the headphone jack, but those take batteries. Dell could make theirs transparent to the OS by just feeding the existing soundcard signal into it & using the notebooks battery power to transmit. And it would work in linux! 3 Comments »

Dell and Lockheed

Dell submitted by dellidea_dc 07/12/07

Dell and Lockheed would make great product design partners.

What if Lockheed worked with dell to come up with a blackbox technology design and breakthrough. Lockheed has won many contracts over Boeing and Northrup just due to visual design and technology that work together.

Dedicated graphics for AMD notebooks

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by migizi 07/13/07

How about some dedicated graphic card options for the AMD notebooks. You claim to be supporting both Intel and AMD but you don't even offer the same options for the AMD that you do for Intel. I know you can get motherboards for AMD laptops that support dedicated graphics. HP has had that option for awhile. Stop showing favoritism, you are only setting the AMD notebooks up for failure by not making them as appealing as the Intel. 1 Comment »

Dell offer a No-OS option in {insert your country here} for all possible computer systems you offer.

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by jorge 07/11/07

Dell offer a No-OS option in{insert your country here}! We also want to have the option of having (or is it not to have) No-OS as an option when buying a computer!

Everyone fill in your own {insert your country here}.

If this doesn't work then create your own idea, it worked for Linux, why not No-OS?

Update: Added all possible computer systems offered by Dell. 52 Comments »

Open innovation

Dell, Simplify IT submitted by j.bandringa 07/12/07

We have open source for software.

We have Wikipedia for content.

I would like to have open innovation for product innovations of Dell. Take some future concepts or ideas that still need research, thinking or design and let us work on them.

Give us the tools needed like:

• 3D models of the product in for example Sketchup format to be redesigned;

• Details on components of the product to be replaced;

• A description of how Dell sees the future.

• Some sort of wiki to communicate about each others contributions. 3 Comments »

Ubuntu on 12.1 or 13.3 inch laptops

Linux, Laptops submitted by miceagol 05/31/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Preload Ubuntu on your 12.1 (XPS M1210) or 13.3 inch (XPS M1330) laptops. As it is now, there's only one choice for a laptop, and that choice is not a light laptop. The 12.1 inch and 13.3 inch laptops are much better to carry around than heavy 15 inch++ laptops.

Check out the Idea in Action update.

Add all the OS's you sell to the "Help Me Choose: Operating System" page

Dell Web Site, Linux, Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 06/08/07

These pages: titled "Help Me Choose: Operating System" (a Dell help me choose page, another one)
only list some of the operating systems Dell sells.

I assume you also recommend Ubuntu for some home users (those who want better security and performance, I imagine) and FreeDOS for business (since that's what you sell on your Latitudes - even though I can't imagine why you prefer FreeDOS there over Ubuntu). But unless you put them in those pages, we can't easily make an informed choice. 15 Comments »

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.
