No more plastic wrap, please
Environment submitted by falbert

In the last shipment of computers I received I was shocked by the amount of plastic wrap used for items like power cords, USB cables, VGA/DVI cables. Do these items really need to be individually wrapped in a plastic bag. I can just imagine the tons of plastic used by Dell annually...

XPS Laptop Dual Cooling
XPS products, Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by funeagle

1) Keep the internal fan for standard cooling when carrying the laptop around.
2) Allow the user to select a dual cooling (water plugs) as an option when configuring the laptop.
3) Hide the two water plugs inside the notebook like on the image bellow:
The user can: 1) Plug in the waterpipes when using it for extensive period at home 2) Pull out the waterpipes when moving the notebook
This way the users will be able to disperse the heat when using the laptop at home using powerful and yet affordable cooling to make the laptop enjoyably silent. Imagine a silent laptop with a reserator like on the picture bellow:

Reveal Truth About Microsoft License / Promotion Deals
Advertising and Marketing, Dell submitted by gear
Apr 27
It is now an open secret that Dell PCs sold with Ubuntu and "No OS" except for servers are more expensive than PCs with a Windows license.
It is also an open secret that Dell is not featuring Ubuntu and Windows XP prominently in accordance with customer demands.
It is also assumed that Dell is under a non-disclosure agreement that prohibits the disclosure of terms Microsoft imposes on the OEM licenses, and also the terms for participating in their promotional programs and other inducements to be an exclusive Microsoft shop.
However, in less than a year, the Administration will change in Washington, and with it, the potential for renewed interest in the anti-competitive behavior of Microsoft and their illegal efforts to extend their monopoly to other markets.
i.e. hardwiring in Microsoft search in Vista and making it very inconvenient for a user to use an alternative search engine, or imposing their Internet Explorer Browser by making Microsoft / Windows update incompatible with all other browsers and not offering customers a choice of alternatives like Firefox when you buy their operating system.
Here are my speculations:
Dell is incentivized by Microsoft to participate in these anti-competitive schemes by the following methods:
- Install Microsoft Vista in lieu of any other operating system
- pays a license fee to Microsoft for every PC sold regardless of whether it ships with a MIcrosoft OS installed.
- rewarded for not pre-installing Firefox
- prevented from not offering "Media Direct" or a equivalent system or making this DRM scheme optional.
- incentivized to offer no viable option to Office except for Microsoft Office Live even when viable options like Googledocs, Open Office, etc. exist and are 'out there'.
- incentivized to bundle Microsoft Works with every PC sold
- prevented from disclosing that Dell is a willing party to these efforts to illegally extend Microsoft's monopoly and participating in anti-competitive measures
Under such circumstances, Dell may have considerable legal liability and exposure to anti-trust laws by colluding with Microsoft.
While it may be a year before these issues come up in the USA, the issue may come up in Europe, where the EU has an active ongoing investigation of Microsoft going on.
I would hate to see Dell fined by the EU like Microsoft.
Please start revealing the truth --- because if the terms are as I speculated above, it likely will be the same terms Microsoft give to every other major manufacturer of PCs.

I would love to be able to order an XPS system with Ubuntu already isntalled. Please make this an option. I would rather support a company that is making Linux offerings than put a system together myself (though I have done that).

Create a customizable all in one network peripheral system.
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas, Simplify IT submitted by jervis961
Mar 31
Dell has made a fortune selling customizable computer systems, perhaps now is the time for them to revolutionize the peripheral market as well. Here's how they can do it.
Make a customizable product that has the ability to include all the network peripheral devices that people use in their homes. options would include: cable or DSL modem, router (wired, wireless or both), VOIP, network storage, printer server and just about anything else they can think of. This would allow the customer to have 1 unit handle all these functions, eliminate wasted space and allow for easy upgrading with new modules when newer technology is released.
My closet is a mess of wires and equipment, Dell can you help me simplifyIT for my home? It could even be used to help your business customers.

Dump the static service call SCRIPTS!
Service and Support submitted by phubert
Apr 1
All I needed was a simple 1U server POWER SUPPLY to replace the one that failed.
But the lady taking my 1-800-945-3355 call was CHAINED to her SCRIPT.
How many times I was asked about software issues, I cannot say.
I WISH I had a RECORDING of that time-wasting session!
And, although I gave her my SERVICE TAG #, I had to read it again to the Gold Queue tech!
Dell... you need to STREAMLINE! Or CUSTOMIZE!!
As I told the #1 phone answerer (I'm afraid she detected the impatience in my voice): "I'm not mad at YOU, I'm mad at DELL!!!"
**
Note: I NEVER call Dell about SOFTWARE issues, ONLY about replacement of failed HARDWARE components!!!

Leveraging Linux for SMB's ... AND the home???
Is Dell then BEHIND the curve???
Japan's Plat'Home launching palm-sized Linux server in U.S.
Part of the first ecology-friendly line of Linux servers ever shipped in the United States, Plat'Home's OpenBlockS server has been built and tested to provide enterprise-grade reliability in its RISC-based hardware, and has eliminated moving parts including a hard disk drive and cooling fan. It is also RoHS-certified, a European Union directive meaning that it's free of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, and other damaging materials.

Server with x16 PCI express slots
Servers and Storage submitted by shadow010
Mar 12
Have some servers equipped with at least one x16 PCI express slot. Normal graphics cards would not fit in the x8 slots of servers. If this had been available I would have bought a server with dual quad cores and added a graphic card to use it as a desktop.
(Programs like Blender can be set to utilize 8 cores, but it wouldn't perform well without a dedicated graphics card.)

Optional 2nd Battery Power Adapter for XPS m1730
XPS products, Laptop Power submitted by houdini
Mar 15
I know this option is offered on the Dell US site, but as for the AU site there is no option in the Dell XPS m1730 customization to allow customers to purchase a 2nd power adapter. It's not a huge inconvenience as customers can always purchase a 2nd one separately, but it would just save time and be less of a hassle if this option was just included on the Australian Dell website (yes I am from Australia, can you tell? :p ).

Next level of Ubuntu multimedia
Linux submitted by 6205
Mar 5
Now, when Dell included in Ubuntu 7.10 comercial DVD playback and Adobe Flash player, is time to move and enhance this initiative to next level...
When Ubuntu 8.04 LTS will be released, ship it with pre-installed high quality multimedia codecs from Fluendo. "Complete Set of Playback Plugins" will move entire Ubuntu experience to whole new level with legal, properly licenced and fully functional playback of those media formats.
Maybe should Dell also cooperate, support or work together with this company and bring to us even more improved (and legaly licenced) codec pack for it own customized Ubuntu version and advertise this added value on Dell Homepage.
This will be something what will motivate me to buy Ubuntu Dell PC much more than some aditional year of support contract.

DELL Idea Storm Team - Each idea should be responded to.
IdeaStorm submitted by stormrider451
Mar 4
Hello there.. I realize this might have been posted before. But, it obviously has not worked to this point. So here it is.
I think the DELL IdeaStorm Team should try their best to reply to EVERY idea regardless of how unrealistic that idea is; not just most popular ideas. I can understand not posting to negative ideas or ideas that simply have been posted to screw around. Every positive idea should be commented on. Its not that hard to have someone go over every idea that has been posted in a day and write some sort of small message. It doesnt take much, just a simple message saying for example: "sorry but I think this idea is not going to happen soon". Or "sorry but we do not find this idea possible". Its simple things that really make the poster know that they are being heard at least. Many of us are here because we like DELL so much we would like to give them a hand with ideas that we might come up with. Of course, some ideas will be regarding things people want on a certain product they want to buy, but I think thats fine too. Take for example my case, I have three ideas so far posted and only one has been answered:
1) Answered: http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/10076698/XPS_One__More_Video_Power_on_X... 2) Not Answered: http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/10077288/XPS_One__Unecessary_Adobe_Elem... ** 3) Not Answered: http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/10077717/Dell_Ink_and_Printers__Sell_th... ***
If you go look at the one that is answered, you will see an example of what I am asking for, you can see there how the idea was answered swiftly and at least it gives me some sort of reply. Comments like these is what I am looking for. Not getting ideas answered makes me really not want to post anything else because I feel I am loosing my time trying to figure cool things that could help my favorite computer company. Dell, if you have this idea storm, lets do it the right way. Make your costumers feel welcomed and that they should keep trying. Is that so much to ask? I mean, I go over each idea posted every day in less than 10 min. Its doable.
Thanks!

Pay-ahead (layaway) receive 10% discount.
Sales Strategies submitted by doctorcox
Mar 15
Some people like the idea of using systematic savings plans. For example, millions of people purposefully have excess tax withholding just so that they can get a refund check.
There are dozens of ways to structure this idea … here’s my suggestion: Customer would get a 10% discount off of their next computer purchase by agreeing to pay for at least ½ of the retail price through the Pay-ahead plan. Dell will deduct a pre-determined monthly payment from your credit card each month. When the customer finally purchases the computer they would receive a 10% discount.

Alternative data entry technology
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Dell submitted by jasko

As the need for new ways to communicate with computers is enormous, DELL has a chance to outpace the competition by developing better data entry technology. When I-Phone uses gestures, this invention (US Patent # 7,038,659) goes beyond simple screen navigation, allowing unimanual text entry that’s a perfect solution for mobile computing and communication devices, such as cell phones. Although still under construction, this site may be of some help: http://yanooshray.googlepages.com

Most of the basic home user requirement can be meet with 512 MB memory, 60-80 GB hard disk and 1 GHz processor. Integrated microphone and webcam will be added benefit to the home user. Any lightweight linux OS will do fine for home user and will save the consumer from M$ royalty as well.
