I have an XPS m1730 with 8800gtx sli cards it is 9 months old.
I had to replace the GPU cards under warranty when it was 6 months old.
After this problem occurred I have done a lot of research on this problem by monitoring my GPU temperature fluctuations. When I am gaming the cards will constantly sit at 79c which is within tolerances. What I have also noticed is that the cards constantly cycle between 49c to 75c at idle with no extra processes or software running which is a 26c range. I believe this constant up and down between temperatures is causing the cards soldering to be damaged.
Dell needs to update the BIOS of these machines so that the fans keep the temperature at a more constant level.
I am one of many users with warranty issues due to GPU failures. This has cost Dell a lot of time and Dell a lot of money. Many users are having the same problems 3 times in a row and thence being upgraded to a "better" system. That is a lot of money that a BIOS update could rectify.

Maybe even if there was documentation released for the second GPU fan, as there are already third party projects able to control GPU1 and CPU fans.
A bit of background --  my system began to display abnormally high thermal readings. GPUs and ACPI temps were peaking in the mid 90's and the laptop would ultimately just shutdown. A quick call to Dell confirmed it was the GPU and a replacement GPU was dispatched. This one was faulty and another one was sent. The replacement died 9 days later. The system wasreplaced with another SLI model after this unfortunate incident.
Given the sheer number of failing 8800MÂ GTX and 9800MÂ GTÂ cards, I would imagine this would be in Dell's best interest to release a BIOSÂ update to add better thermal control.Â
Lets get this one promoted and implemented. There are still many XPS M1730 owners out there.
I also echo sentiments similar to those made by Mr. Zero. It is an unfortunate design flaw within the 8800m/9800m GTX vidfeo cards that has become the central cause for a majority of these system failures, complaints, and follow-up replacements.
Dell cannot expect to resolve so many GPU failures with constant replacements--that are also doomed to fail--leading up to the eventual scenario where they have no suitable replacements for a rather large and angry mob of disgruntled customers. All this grief due to thermal cycling is clearly a sign of something relatively trivial, instigating a more serious problem for all parties concerned, and that is not rational.
In order for both the consumer, and for Dell to win on a decent compromise, Dell should release a BIOS update that should allow the end-user better control of the thermal protocol.
IÂ believe the M1730 still has a lot of potential, and with such an updated BIOS, this machine's GPUs could exhibit a proper, respetable life-span that would benefit both Dell and its customers in the long run.
Good God. I hope their brain overheats soon ...

Don't jig the BIOSÂ I love my replacement M17x. Woohooo!!!!
: P
I am concerned about it happening again !!
I'm on a 9800GT, which is the 2nd replacement after two faulty 8800GTX in the last 12 month. For the latest replacement I had to wait for a month and I have to say my limit was pushed and the next time around I'd argue for a replacement for the M1730 due to Dell's inability to address this repeated issue that costed fair bit of downtime on a preimium product.
Let's act, Dell.
The funny thing was that I proposed that if I wanted to upgrade some of the spec I would pay the difference and the rep refused saying it couldn't be done. Seriously who doesn't want money in this environment
All it needs is the fans going faster, i noticed that it never goes above 75(well for mine anyway) the fans can get faster and faster but it wont move from 75, for some strange reason tahst what they want the temps to be. If they made it 60 or 65 it would solve all their problems.

XPS M1730 Core 2 Extreme X9000 (2.8GHz, 800Mhz 6MÂ L2 Cache)
1GB Nvidia Dual GeForce 9800M GT.
At the upper left hand corner it would get so hot you could not touch it. I called Dell and they said it needed a fan ect. Dell sent the tech and he quickly seen that it was more than that. He took it apart and sure enough the 9800M GT was bad. He called Dell and they agreed to replace it with another one.
First Dell tried to push a lesser on off on me. I have a 4 year warranty and I was not going down that road. I have gotten to the point that they are going to send me another M1730. If they email them or try to call they just blow me off.
I would appreciate any help or suggestions how to get Dell to replace it.
One week later I had to have the LCD replaced again and the keyboard.
I have since spoken with Dell about my concerns over heat from the GPU and also problems with Windows disabling the GPU for no apparent reason.
Dell now want to replace the MB and the GPU again.
I have just had a call from the engineers to say the gPU is not available as there is a backlog. No surprise there really.
My GPU's just died.
I have barely had time to use the 1730 since the GPU's were replaced in Aug 09.
I was just given Fallout 3, 2 nights ago so I've had 2 hours of gaming and in that time the card temps never went above 79c. Turn on the computer today to check some settings and noticed that the Win Experienc hasn't been run so I decided to give it a go for old times sake and 3 secs in BSOD............
The XPS m1730 is turning into a train wreck.
I should note that I am not a gamer. the failures I have had just "happened" running everyday apps. like word processing, and spreadsheets. Â
I used the 1730 for all my families computing needs. We live in a rural area with no local school. My sons attend school every day via video conferencing with their teacher and class mates on the 1730 so it is crucial for us. It was the classroom for my sons as there is no school where we live. It was our tv and stereo and video player. Now it is the world's most expensive word processor. My sons have been unable to sit classes or end of year exams and won't be able to do so until school resumes next year. We bough the most expensive and powerful laptop with the assurance of Next Business Day Service.
During the past month I have been stalled by Dell CS for weeks. I have never had one promised email or call returned. I have been lied to on numerous occasions. I have been hung up on or transferred to a dead line about 8 times. I have been promised to have a replacement m17x expedited so that my sons can access their schooling. I was promised that the replacement would be here today. Instead I found out it is being delivered via SEA MAIL !! and won't be here until mid December at best.... We live in a rural area not at the end of the world.... we still have an air service everyday.
What in the world happened to NBD service? I've been a very proud Dell Business and Private Customer for 10 years but after this episode of insanity I will be going back to Apple or elsewhere. It is no wonder that I read in the media that Dell is dropping to it's competitors so fast. This sort of service and reliability is unacceptable.
I paid the price of a new laptop just for extended warranty and the promise of the best service available and all I've received in return is Operators and Customer Service reps who transfer me to a dead line. Managers who make a promise and then don't honour their promises. I won't go through Dell ever again. : (
My issues are summed up here http://en.community.dell.com/blogs/direct2dell/archive/2010/02/19/update-on-dpc-latency-for-alienware-m17x-customers.aspx
I give up..............
