Bios update for XPSm 1730 By Slammin,  Oct 13, 2009

I have an XPS m1730 with 8800gtx sli cards it is 9 months old.

I had to replace the GPU cards under warranty when it was 6 months old.

After this problem occurred I have done a lot of research on this problem by monitoring my GPU temperature fluctuations. When I am gaming the cards will constantly sit at 79c which is within tolerances. What I have also noticed is that the cards constantly cycle between 49c to 75c at idle with no extra processes or software running which is a 26c range. I believe this constant up and down between temperatures is causing the cards soldering to be damaged.

Dell needs to update the BIOS of these machines so that the fans keep the temperature at a more constant level.

I am one of many users with warranty issues due to GPU failures. This has cost Dell a lot of time and Dell a lot of money. Many users are having the same problems 3 times in a row and thence being upgraded to a "better" system. That is a lot of money that a BIOS update could rectify.

I've had replacement GPUs as well, and the paste had dried a little. HTC paste should not dry within a couple of years, since it guarantees failures due to heat - usually outside of the initial warranty period. Heat transfer compound only dries if it's cheap or suffers prolonged overheating.

Maybe even if there was documentation released for the second GPU fan, as there are already third party projects able to control GPU1 and CPU fans.

Even though the XPS M1730 is 'end of life', this still needs to be released.  As an ex-M1730 owner (my system was lost to a failed 8800M GTX SLI) I encourage Dell to seriously consider this proposed fix.

A bit of background --  my system began to display abnormally high thermal readings.  GPUs and ACPI temps were peaking in the mid 90's and the laptop would ultimately just shutdown.  A quick call to Dell confirmed it was the GPU and a replacement GPU was dispatched.  This one was faulty and another one was sent.  The replacement died 9 days later.  The system wasreplaced with another SLI model after this unfortunate incident.

Given the sheer number of failing 8800M  GTX and 9800M GT cards, I would imagine this would be in Dell's best interest to release a BIOS update to add better thermal control.

Lets get this one promoted and implemented.  There are still many XPS M1730 owners out there.

I fully endorse this proposal with my vote.

I also echo sentiments similar to those made by Mr. Zero. It is an unfortunate design flaw within the 8800m/9800m GTX vidfeo cards that has become the central cause for a majority of these system failures, complaints, and follow-up replacements.

Dell cannot expect to resolve so many GPU failures with constant replacements--that are also doomed to fail--leading up to the eventual scenario where they have no suitable replacements for a rather large and angry mob of disgruntled customers. All this grief due to thermal cycling is clearly a sign of something relatively trivial, instigating a more serious problem for all parties concerned, and that is not rational.

In order for both the consumer, and for Dell to win on a decent compromise, Dell should release a BIOS update that should allow the end-user better control of the thermal protocol.

I believe the M1730 still has a lot of potential, and with such an updated BIOS, this machine's GPUs could exhibit a proper, respetable life-span that would benefit both Dell and its customers in the long run.

I have been doing some searches on failed GPU's in the XPS m1730. There are a heap of angry people out there.

Who would be so stupid as to vote against a BIOS that would effectively increase the lifespan of the laptop?
Good God. I hope their brain overheats soon ...

If you read the m1730 thread on notebookforums, you see tons of posts of people who had their gpu's replaced;  I had a 1720 at first, gpu 2times replaced, now I have a M1730, GPU replaced only 3 months after delivery !!!!! (M9800GT SLI)
I am concerned about it happening again !!

Strongly agree, unless Dell want to send me a M17x replacement...

I'm on a 9800GT, which is the 2nd replacement after two faulty 8800GTX in the last 12 month. For the latest replacement I had to wait for a month and I have to say my limit was pushed and the next time around I'd argue for a replacement for the M1730 due to Dell's inability to address this repeated issue that costed fair bit of downtime on a preimium product.

Let's act, Dell.

Mine failed a month ago and Dell has promised to replace my system with an M17x, they are yet to confirm the specs, that will come next week.

The funny thing was that I proposed that if I wanted to upgrade some of the spec I would pay the difference and the rep refused saying it couldn't be done.  Seriously who doesn't want money in this environment

I have only gone though two sets so far but more are probably to come, i spoke with the technical team with dell, they talked to the leveel two support about it but said they will look into it, still nothing.
All it needs is the fans going faster, i noticed that it never goes above 75(well for mine anyway) the fans can get faster and faster but it wont move from 75, for some strange reason tahst what they want the temps to be. If they made it 60 or 65 it would solve all their problems.

Who the heck keeps demoting the idea? I really dont understand WHO could object to a GOOD idea that would make the laptop LAST longer and have better temps.

I have a XPS M1730 that is less than 6 months and it gets so hot it will shut down.

XPS M1730 Core 2 Extreme X9000 (2.8GHz, 800Mhz 6M L2 Cache)
1GB Nvidia Dual GeForce 9800M GT.

At the upper left hand corner it would get so hot you could not touch it.  I called Dell and they said it needed a fan ect. Dell sent the tech and he quickly seen that it was more than that. He took it apart and sure enough the 9800M GT was bad. He called Dell and they agreed to replace it with another one.

First Dell tried to push a lesser on off on me. I have a 4 year warranty and I was not going down that road. I have gotten to the point that they are going to send me another M1730. If they email them or try to call they just blow me off.

I would appreciate any help or suggestions how to get Dell to replace it.

Iv recently just got my xps m1730, overheating dell laptops is nothing new to me, my last two died from overheating. However if all thats needed is a simple bios update to start the fans in at a lower temp then i'm all for it!  This would save our hardware and save delI hundreds of thousands of dollers.

I have had my GPU replaced about a week before my warrantly expired. I also had the LCD replaced.

One week later I had to have the LCD replaced again and the keyboard.

I have since spoken with Dell about my concerns over heat from the GPU and also problems with Windows disabling the GPU for no apparent reason.

Dell now want to replace the MB and the GPU again.

I have just had a call from the engineers to say the gPU is not available as there is a backlog. No surprise there really.

My GPU's just died.

I have barely had time to use the 1730 since the GPU's were replaced in Aug 09.

I was just given Fallout 3, 2 nights ago so I've had 2 hours of gaming and in that time the card temps never went above 79c. Turn on the computer today to check some settings and noticed that the Win Experienc hasn't been run so I decided to give it a go for old times sake and 3 secs in BSOD............

The XPS m1730 is turning into a train wreck.

I bought my xps1730 in nov. 2008.  From then till now, nov, 2009 , I have had 2 8800m gtx  gpu failures.  When I was talking to the service person I requested  a bios upgrade to keep the fans running instead of cycling them on and off.   My suggestion fell on deaf ears.  I have a 4 year premium warranty,  and by 1012, when it ends, I bet the machine will have had 4 to 5 gpu replacements.  This is crazy!   A simple bios upgrade can fix this failure. Thousands of 1730 laptop owners are having the same problem. It cannot be cost effective for dell to keep making these warranty repairs.  PLEASE UPDATE THE BIOS.
I should note that I am not a gamer. the failures I have had just "happened"  running everyday apps. like word processing, and spreadsheets.

I bought my M1730 (X9000 with 8800 SLi) in June 08 and the GPUs, RAM and motherboard were replaced in April 09 (I got the new 9800 GTs) and just yesterday the GPUs blew again.  Waiting for replacement GPUs now ... I agree something has to be done, I've never seen so many hardware failures for any laptop ever.  I've got two old Rock Direct Pegasus laptops and they keep chugging away.  If this M1730 blows another set of GPUs I'm going back to Rock.

Well it's now over a month since my 1730 died bacause of the well known GPU failures.

I used the 1730 for all my families computing needs. We live in a rural area with no local school. My sons attend school every day via video conferencing with their teacher and class mates on the 1730 so it is crucial for us. It was the classroom for my sons as there is no school where we live. It was our tv and stereo and video player. Now it is the world's most expensive word processor. My sons have been unable to sit classes or end of year exams and won't be able to do so until school resumes next year. We bough the most expensive and powerful laptop with the assurance of Next Business Day Service.

During the past month I have been stalled by Dell CS for weeks. I have never had one promised email or call returned. I have been lied to on numerous occasions. I have been hung up on or transferred to a dead line about 8 times. I have been promised to have a replacement m17x expedited so that my sons can access their schooling. I was promised that the replacement would be here today. Instead I found out it is being delivered via SEA MAIL !! and won't be here until mid December at best.... We live in a rural area not at the end of the world.... we still have an air service everyday.

What in the world happened to NBD service? I've been a very proud Dell Business and Private Customer for 10 years but after this episode of insanity I will be going back to Apple or elsewhere. It is no wonder that I read in the media that Dell is dropping to it's competitors so fast. This sort of service and reliability is unacceptable.

I paid the price of  a new laptop just for extended warranty and the promise of the best service available and all I've received in return is Operators and Customer Service reps who transfer me to a dead line. Managers who make a promise and then don't honour their promises. I won't go through Dell ever again. :  (

I got a 17x and it can't even play an mp3.

My issues are summed up here http://en.community.dell.com/blogs/direct2dell/archive/2010/02/19/update-on-dpc-latency-for-alienware-m17x-customers.aspx

I give up..............
