When adding backlighting, it's easy to get carried away. For example, see the backlighting of the power button, volume controls etc. on this Dell Adamo (from engadget).
Please be very careful on how you use backlighting -- it should be functional (can I see the keyboard in the dark) and it should not cause distractions (why is that power button so bright that I can see its reflection in the screen??)
I like the idea of having the option of a back-lit keyboard, but I didn't like this statement:Â
"It should DEFINETELY be put into all XPSÂ laptops."
I think that making it compulsory is a terrible idea; it would raise the cost of the computer, and maybe some people only really use their laptop in the day. Why pay more for a feature that you're not going to use? In addition, there are people who do not prefer to use the 'qwerty' format and so don't even need to look at the keyboard (and there are those of us who use 'qwerty' format and are just so used to it that we don't need to, either. Why waste battery life and pay more for a function that you don't need?
As a proud XPS M1530 owner (and Inpiron 1525 buyer 4 my girlfriend) I agree that I´ll love to have the option to add in a backlit keyboard at the time of buying them talking from the product´s usability point of view (as a heavy Laptop user there´re certain circumstancies where not counting with backlighting keyboards affect the overall user experience with your laptop).
And please make the luminosity 3-way, with the additional one being a half (or less) of the current lowest setting, which is way too bright for me in almost all cases and thus consumes more power than needed. Also, if I`m right and it`s pretty cheap, I`ll suggest it not be an option (in constrast to GHC), since an additional buck or 5 would be lower if it was standard fare (not lower than no lighting, but a standard would make lit keyboards cheaper than if it was an option.)
I im so desperate for a backlit keyboard that i talk to Dell to see if the can send my a technician to install a studio keyboard on my M1530, unfortunately it wont fit, i think is so simple to create a backlit keyboard and lots of people would buy it...
Although I LOVE my Vostro 1500, I am now on my FOURTH keyboard replacement because the writing on the keys keeps wearing off. DELLÂ has been terrific because they even mamaged to replace the keyboard while I was in Panama. Pretty impressive! I do use it a lot in low light situations though and I either struggle to see the keys or use an overhead desk lamp which is both hot and more than I need. I would think that backlighting the keys, with cut-outs showing the letters would be far more practical and also would not wear out. If it were possible to have this as a retrofit that would be awseome.Â
Having a backlit keyboard is a plus for me. I use my laptop on planes and other dimly lit places. I would have loved to have this feature on my laptop. But I'll have to wait at least a couple more years before I can buy a new laptop.
@Dell, Please check the frequency of the LED dimmer used for the keyboards. On some laptops -not necessarily Dell- I can see them flicker. Though I am apparently genetically 'gifted' to be more sensitive to that than most people, but still.
What does that mean?
