Implement a system by which Ubuntu systems automatically get promotional discounts their Windows counterparts get By aysiu,  Oct 8, 2008

It's been well over a year since Dell has started selling Ubuntu-preinstalled computers.

And ever since the very beginning, we have seen this trend:
1. The Ubuntu computer appears cheaper at first than the Windows computer
2A. When you compare similar specs, however, the Ubuntu computer is more expensive
2B. Or the Windows computer gets some free upgrade or promotional discount but the Ubuntu computer does not
3. The Linux community raises a big fuss over it (on blogs, no Idea Storm, on Digg)
4. Dell responds by saying "Oops. It was a mistake. We have corrected the pricing so that Ubuntu is a little cheaper now. Sorry."

Then it repeats again 1-4. Then it repeats again 1-4.

How about saving us all the trouble and just finding a way so that the pricing is automatically reduced for Ubuntu every time the Windows computers get some instant savings or promotional discount?

By the way, I realize my idea is very similar to http://www.dellideastorm.com/article/show/10089951/Put_Ubuntu_on_sale_at_the_same_time_as_Windows_unfair_to_Ubuntu_sales_count_if_we_install_it_afterwords but it is slightly different. I'm actually asking not just that an effect be achieved but that something be put in place to make that effect perpetually (and not on a case-by-case basis) in place. Also that discussion got completely derailed and off-topic.

Actually this would be easier to do if the Ubuntu machines weren't segregated in their own little world. With the Linux options in a completely separate section there are too many things to keep track of. No wonder it keeps happening again, and again, and again. I think Dell should be commended for promoting Linux as much as they are, but it does seem like a bit of an afterthought at times.

I'd agree with you, except that this same thing happened with the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 as well, and in that case the Ubuntu model is side-by-side with the XP models.
