underpowered / misconfigured graphic cards By kjano,  Jul 27, 2007

dear dell team, i am really a big fan of your desktops and notebooks but there is one thing that drives me crazy! dell sells excellent and reliable hardware - no question. but since month a good 15,4" notebook with strong graphic card is missing. the problem is not just the missing power for games, but also for GIS and CAD applications. i was so happy to see the new Inspiron 1520 notebook using the 8600M GT card, but then it turns out, that it is based on DDR2 memory. sorry, but this is crazy. if you look at reviews of MacBook PRO, ASUS G1S and many more all running their 8600M GTs with GDDR3 (as proposed by Nvidea) and than compare it to a notebook (such as the new Acer 5920G) using the same card but with DDR2 the difference is about 20%. Selling a notebook such as the Inspiron 1520 with DDR2 memory for the graphic card is really a misconfiguration.

The situation is even worse for the new Precision M4300. the website says that it is made for CAD etc, but the FX 360M is the smallest nvidea card for professionals, it has just a 64-Bit-interface. thats really too slow.

I would be very happy to see well powered graphic cards in dell notebooks, not just only for 17" - nobody like to carry them around. there are so many manufacturers that are able to deliver such notebooks, why not dell?

Yep. I just don't get Dell. And if they sold you a DDR3 version, expect to pay $100 more. Ridiculous.

paying more is okay - ddr3 is more expensive.

Yes. Indeed. But not $100 more on a 512mb config.

I really would have liked to add atleast an FX570m (as offered in the Lenovo T61p & HP 8510w) to the M4300 I recently ordered. I needed a serial port so you got my money but I looked hard at other solutions due to the anemic GPU offerings in your truely portable systems.

maybe also with the new 8700GT? however for me a 8600GT with DDR3 would be fine.

I would have prefered the FX570m offered in the T61p & 8510w... I ordered the M4300 due to it's serial port and my plethora of D series accessories.
