Sort comments in DESCENDING order - add NEXT/PREV page buttons By phubert,  Jul 25, 2007

IdeaStorm:

It has been suggested several times that IdeaStorm display comments in descending order.

In addition to this, however, let me suggest that a limited number of comments be displayed, reducing the time to LOAD (access from the server and SEND), and providing Prev - Next 'buttons' to navigate through the comments.

This should do two things: reduce the load on the server(s) and reduce the time to load at the user's browser for posts with many comments.

Combine this with the display in descending order and the overall user experience will be improved!

This has been updated this to fully implemented as you now have the option to sort the comments in either direction per each idea

I feel an obsessive, compulsive need to find something to tag this as a DUPLICATEOF. But while there's four similar ideas, there is no exact match as the Previous / Next buttons haven't been mentioned before. *goes off to sulk*

It was one of my earlier ideas where I had suggested bifurcating the comments into groups of 10/25/50/100/150/200. But phubert added the Prev/Next buttons. Still something different in his idea. You get my vote, phubert!

So can I make a new one only add in that we should have the option of selecting how many comments we want per page instead of a set amount?

Wouldn't that be a duplicate/borrowed/shared? Just kidding. Go right ahead. With all the mergers happening over the last few hours, I sure hope dell_admin* get around to implementing our idea on the comments.

I can't wait to see what gets merged. I tagged the current top idea because it is basically a dupe of one of the items on my 6 things for Dell to change. Mine was posted first.

Good for you. Let's wait and see how it goes. BTW, which was the original one that you posted? How did you tag the current top one? Reported it as abuse?

The idea I tagged is this one. http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/62715/Preinstalled_Software_Must_Be_Optional If you look at my lastcomment you will see it just use the same wording in capitols and put a link to the idea that it is a duplicate of.

looks like a duplicate to me http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/72153/Paginate_Comments & my suggestion yesterday: suggest the option of 10, 25, 50, 100 or unlimited. also suggest a sort option ascending or descending. Both should be saved against the user preferences. But i agree, nice idea.

One other problem: the page numbers as you move through your "Ideas Submitted" don't appear to work. Clicking on one SHOULD take you to that page... at least the last few times I TRIED using them, it didn't!

We do have Next/Prev buttons,  However, the sort order of the comments has been set as oldest to newest to keep the conversation flow logical.

Correct.  We implemented that part and denied the comment part of the idea.  I suppose Partial is the appropriate status.  :-)
