Remove Number Pad from Keyboard (Inspiron 1564) By Ender004,  Jun 5, 2010

The number pad on the Inspiron 1564 pushes the entire keyboard off-center, which is distracting.

Remove the number pad and re-center the keyboard.

studio 15 design By husky,  Jun 4, 2010

on the studio 15, if you took off most of the trim around the keypad, and moved it all to the side, you would have enough room for a number pad and the other keys missing for a full keypad

Make the numeric keypad on laptops easier to use! By ScottR926,  Apr 30, 2009

I thought the purpose of the numeric keypad on laptop computers was to make it possible to enter numerical data efficiently using ONLY ONE HAND!  As a teacher, I have to sort through papers as I enter numerical data.  But my new Studio 1537 laptop requires that I hold down the <Fn> key with my left hand as I use the keypad with my right hand.  This is ridiculous!  The numeric keypad serves no purpose if I have to use two hands--I might as well be using two hands to use the standard number keys.  What is the purpose of the <Num Lk> key anyway if I am also required to hold down the <Fn> key in order to use the keypad?  This is just silly.

I know that other systems have BIOS settings that can be adjusted so that the numeric keypad will function once the <Num Lk> key is activated without use of the <Fn> key.  How about updating the BIOS to include this option?  I, for one, would certainly appreciate it!

Dell Studio XPS 16 By Thelxiepeia,  Jan 19, 2009

I have been looking for a new dell for a while since my XPS M1330 is getting a bit outdated, so i looked at the new Studio XPS 13 and 16 .. the 13 has the same keyboardlayout as my M1330 with practically no plastic spacing on either side of the keyboard. However the XPS 16 has adopted the crucial failure of adding 2-3 cm of plastic on either side of the keyboard, atleast as an improvement from the M1530 this waste of potential keyboard is used for speakers.

The speakers could easily be moved to above the keyboard as seen on the 13" laptops and the keyboard could be expanded to having a numpad.

It may seem irrelevant to some people but the one thing i really missed on my M1330 was the lag of a numpad since quite a few games had numpad integrated in their setups.

On the M1730 we see its possible to add this numpad part of the keyboard without too much trouble so my question is why havent the  Studio XPS 16 been fitted with atleast the option of a numpad keyboard instead misplaced speakers?

I hope to see this feature on a future Studio XPS so my doubt about what laptop i should buy would be at an end.

Thanks

Jacob

Remove NumLock button from all keyboards By castlefox,  Oct 7, 2008

Remove NumLock button from all keyboards

That button has not function and I hate seeing that light on because I like to play games in the dark. Please remove all NumLock buttons from keyboards supplied from Dell.

Bluetooth Numberpad By erikmurr,  Jul 21, 2008

Recently I purchased a Precision M4300 laptop. I do a lot of programming, so I was hoping to get a laptop with a 10-key number pad. I just do not need a 17" laptop to lug arround.

My laptop has Bluetooth, so I have been looking for a nice travel mouse. I am greatly disappointed that there are only about 2 out there right now. With Bluetooth so popular, why do all of the travel mice use USB receivers that hang out the back or side of a laptop?

Anyhow, to further my frustration, I have not found a single Bluetooth numberpad. There are many pads out there for those who's laptops do not have them or that are left handed and want to have their pad on the left side of their keyboard.

It would be really handy to have a Bluetooth numberpad that has no wires or receivers to hang out the side or back of a laptop. Perhaps bundle it with a nice Bluetooth travel mouse.

Laptops/mousepad By radiohaze,  May 8, 2008

Why are mousepads on the left-hand side of laptops, when most of us are RIGHT-HANDED, using a mouse with our RIGHT hand and the keyboard with our LEFT ? I'm finding it incredibly frustrating, trying to find a laptop that doesn't force me to use it left-handed.

Bluetooth Number Keypad Option for Laptops By rietnau,  Jan 27, 2008

I would like to see Dell offer a Bluetooth number pad option for laptops. The world is adopting wireless options and a search for bluetooth number pad's has turned up nothing. The closest options to external number pads are 2.4 ghz and cable based. There is one option though, and it is the Logitech Dinovo Keyboard set. I am not about to pay $170 for a keyboard set when all I want is a number pad.

The XPS M1330 only has two usb ports and connecting a number pad (whether 2.4 ghz or cable based) to it would limit it to one. I would also like to keep the number of peripherals sticking out of my laptop to a minimum, so a Bluetooth number pad would be ideal.

Dell has done a great job offering the Bluetooh travel mouse and a number pad would probably be well received. The technology is already out. Dell should be the first to offer the Bluetooth number pad option.

Laptops: Bigger LETTER Keys By zanlok,  Jan 27, 2008

I know my image is nonideal, but what I really want is a full-size qwerty keyboard on my 17" laptop. Especially my XPS 1730. I'd sacrifice the numpad for this. I'd also gladly pay $50 extra! This was admittedly mentioned here. BUT: that idea got merged with something about having a numpad. No,no,no: bad moderator.

17" Precision with an integrated number pad By wnahorn,  Nov 20, 2007

Seeing as how all other manufacturers of 17" workstation class laptops have integrated numberpads, it strikes me as odd that Dell has not produced such a system. I was excited to hear about the M6300, and then disappointed to see that it was essentailly just a newer M90.

Those of us who spend large amounts of time dealing with numbers could really use a number pad that does not require the use of the [Fn] key.

A new precision series By jamg7,  Nov 1, 2007

A new precision with AMD quad core, 64 bit operating system, lots of ram has been the dream of many people I know (including myself). So far, only low end desktops and laptops is what Dell is selling AMD based. I think there should also be a high end workstation with AMD Opteron or Barcelona.

Center typing area on keyboards By tonybrubaker,  Aug 17, 2007

The standard dell keyboard I have has the number pad and all the arrow and navigational keys (home, end, page down, page up, etc.) at one end of the keyboard. When I type, I sit centered on the main typing area. This puts all the rest of the keyboard (number pad, navigational keys, etc.) hanging off to the right. This is sometimes annoying because it ends up hanging off the edge of my keyboard stand, etc. A keyboard should be made where the main typing are is the center of the keyboard, the number pad is on the right and all the navigational keys are on the left. That way the user sits center on the entire keyboard and doesn't have the bulk of it hanging off to one side.

User-programmable keyboards By cendrillon117,  Jul 5, 2007

When I was keying in a lot of numbers to Excel, I was able to keep my right hand over the number keypad and didn't need my left hand except when I wanted to tab to a new column. I thought it would be neat at the time to have another key over at the keypad for tabbing. After studying things, however, I see that is not practical.

What might be neat is to have an easily user-programmable keyboard that one can change the use of one key to something else, such as the * key could become tab if that user needs that function more. Perhaps while in Excel for a long time we could program a tab key as stated, then reset it back to its original when done. These could be RAM-type changes that default to original upon reboot, too.

When using an AS400 system, they have keyboard maps that can be altered by the user and that's what gave me this idea.

D-Module Num Pad for Latitudes By jason.donaghy,  May 31, 2007

Create a D-Mod Num Pad for Latitude systems. Like a D-Mod CDRom it could fit flush and have a button to "eject" it for use.

I know that myself and alot of my co-workers who use Latitude D610 and D620's would love to have a number pad that could hide when not in use.

Laptop / Notebooks Keyboard Interface - Expand and Lighting By kreisler,  May 3, 2007

These ideas would probably serve the XPS series well, but no harm with the Inspiron for selective suggestions.

1. Expanded Keyboard
For the larger notebooks, probably 17", accommodate a full sized keyboard (with the numpad on the left, like a normal desktop keyboard)

2. Keyboard Lighting
All the letters, numbers and symbols on the keyboard are replaced with see-through plastics (not the entire single key surface, just the letter part), and insert lighting into the key itself.

As added feature, the user can turn on and off a 'light sensitivity feature', a futuristic-looking suggestion that when a key is pressed, the light will lit up and then will dim off (to a default low lighting or entirely off) gradually in a time span of around 1 secs (time span is short as people type fast these days)

Hence when typing on a keyboard night or low light environment, you will have a very nice sequencing of lights over the keyboard. I would think this bumps the cool factor of the notebook one notch up.

Thanks for reading.

number pad tab key By stamatina,  Apr 3, 2007

thank you for the enter key on the number pad. How about a TAB key on the number pad? It would make my life wonderful since I set up and enter into my Excel sheets to tab right to the next cell instead of down. Pretty please?

Numeric Keypad on 17" Laptops By z_darius,  Feb 20, 2007

HP, Acer, Toshiba and a bunch of others offer it. HP has even an option of dual HDD. 17" laptops have quite a bit of space inside to pack a lot of goodies.

Most people looking for desktop replacement with the mobility option need the full keyboard. What's the holdup at Dell?
