Built in Projector for Laptops/Netbooks By Strykergod,  6:16 AM

I work in a fairly large corporation, and there are issues when customers come to our company and do presentations. We have 2 Portable Projectors which are required to be signed out from our IT department, and they are usually unavailable because everyone utilizes them on a weekly basis.  Also, there is only one room that has a "fixed" projector that can be used for meetings at one time.

What is the most unused portion of a laptop or netbook?  In my opinion, it is the backside of the LCD screen that you are viewing.  We have all seen the cell phone capabilities with built in projectors (for instance the Samsung W7900), which has a DLP projector.  Why not incorporate this technology into Laptops/Netbooks on the reverse side of the screen that you are viewing?  This would resolve the issues around signing out projectors, or finding a projector, which could be a limited resource for a corporation.  This could also help us to be more of a mobile computing consumer.

Fix Dell Streak's inability to connect to some hotspots (DHCP issue) By tommed,  6:03 AM

My Streak will not connect to some WIFI hotspots; it always times-out when obtaining the IP address.

We have people in the same office with other android devices which don't have the issue. Also, iPhones work fine.

Have seen this issue with a number of WIFI hotspots.

Stop using Broadcom wifi adapters and use something which is more Linux friendly! By tommed,  6:01 AM

The standard wifi adapter isn't too bad (nothing too hard for a geek like me anyway), but the upgraded N wifi adapter is IMPOSSIBLE to get working with Linux! Everything else works superbly!

If you have no plans to stop using Broadcom, then just put pressure on them to develop better wifi drivers for Linux.

integrate USB disk into notebook charger By ThorstenStaerk,  Yesterday

The chargers for the notebooks have become much thinner now. Fill up the space again with a USB harddisk. Advantage: You will automatically always have this harddisk with you. You could use it as a backup disk.

Elimate wait time to get PAID support! By ellen,  2 days ago

I;ve been on hold for what seems like forever.  Not smart on Dell's part.  I am looking for PAID support.  I am also on the market for a high end laptop.  If this is the support you get when you have to PAY for it... I can only imagine the support I'd get if I was under "free" support with a new laptop.... .

Reduce fan noise in laptops (easy & "free" fix) By gpig,  3 days ago

I have an XPS 1645.  When it is idle, or I am doing a simple task like web browsing, the fan cycles between off and on (low speed, but quite audible) every minute or so.

My proposed easy and "free" fix is as follows:
Let’s suppose the fan at low speed spins at 1000 RPM (I don't know the actual value, just an example).  Why not instead spin the fan at 500 RPM all the time rather than an annoying cycle?  I believe that if the fan was spinning at half its low speed all the time, it would be nearly silent, plus it would still keep the laptop cool.  Of course, my proposed change would only be for the low fan speed.  I understand that under heavy load the fan will have to come on much higher to keep the laptop cool.

I can't imagine this change would be too difficult for Dell to implement (simple BIOS update, I would imagine), and I know it would make customers happy (several customers from NBR were talking about it).

Make video card that play HD video standard on netbooks. By RWPruitt,  3 days ago

How about making video card that support displaying streaming HD videos a standard on all netbook devices.  HD audio is already installed and widescreen displays are used. Use video components that will actually play the widescreen HD videos without stuttering. HD video is almost completely a standard online.

Latitude E4310 3-Cell Battery Wanted! By architectbarb,  Aug 29, 2010

My E4310 does not seem to have a 3-cell battery option.  This is one of the things I liked about the E4300--if I am using it mostly in places where I can plug it in, I can use the smaller battery and save weight.  The E4300 3-cell doesn't fit in the E4310--it would be great if you could offer one that does!

Wireless signal strength By shomenbanerjee,  Aug 28, 2010

I have a Dell XPS M1330 and use wireless almost always in home and in office. I notice that while in office when I use a external monitor, and hence close the lid of my laptop; the wireless signal strength drop from "Excellent" to "Poor" and at times is not even able to connect. I have tried variety of positions and locations, and realized that closing the lid significantly drops the signal strength.

I think Dell should design the wireless access in a manner whereby keeping the lid closed or open should not hamper the signal strength. Either have antenna (if there is any) on 2 sides, or provide with some external antenna, or simply have it inside the laptop that is invisible to the user but passes along the perimeter of the laptop body.

builtin wireless localnetwork By deeagle,  Aug 27, 2010

I am very green at networking.  I now use an expensive wireless system with plugin stick drives (usb) and would like to see a built in system for local networking so I could use the same programs on all three units, 2 laptops and a desktop.

Dell Inspiron too heavy By Nakoltec,  Aug 27, 2010

Hello,
Dell Inspiron is too heavy compared to brand like Asus 220. Dell must think about reducing the weight here.
thanks,

Update the Keyboards By Allie,  Aug 27, 2010

QWERTY keyboards have been the standard since the days of typewriters.  They are outdated and inefficient.   QWERTY was designed to slow typists down because they were typing too fast for pre-electronic typewriters.  Since then, monumental advancements have been made in technology all but eliminating concern for excessive typist speeds.  In our modern high-speed society, we have to be able to express ourselves and perform tasks as quickly and economically as possible.

I suggest reformatting the keyboard, or making it an option for those resistant to change, to a more effective design such as the Dvorak keyboard.

CDMA Phones By FrankJ,  Aug 27, 2010

Please make CDMA phones in addition to your GSM versions!

Especially the 'rumored' Dell Lighting. It would blow away anything in Verizon's lineup!

Personalization issues when ordering an Alienware M17x R2 By rarriagao,  Aug 26, 2010

Last time I tried to configure my alienware M17X (around 4K USD) and because my business takes place all over LATAM my only special request was for the keyboard to be in spanish (so I will have easy access to characters such as "ñ" ), and of course all my OS and software to be in english (and my personal nameplate), well so I didn't found the option on the page so got a customer service representative and they told me that I cann't get my Alienware with spanish keyboard layout!!! (so far the end of the complete customization process).  Undaunted by this, I log on Dell's Puerto Rico shop (webpage), and sure enough they have the spanish keyboard but cann't offer me the personalized nameplate! So far what I see is a problem of logistics: they have the keyboard but is not available in the US, and they have the personalized nameplate but only available in the US (although you may remember Puerto Rico is part of the US, but not such luck, you get stucked to a very reduced DELL products offer), and internally DELL cann't either request the keyboard so the machine can be assembled in the US or to assemble the machine outside the US with an spanish keyboard and then sent to the US for them to put the personalized nameplate (or send the nameplate by DHL to the other factory).
At the end had to get my Alienware without my personalized nameplate and without the backpack just because I really need my keyboard with a different layout.  In the US the market for spanish speaking people is constantly growing so it would be a great move to address this market segment needs.  Also if you cann't get fully personalized equipment, then dont advertize such thing.  Best regards

Dell OS By RonnieW,  Aug 26, 2010

Have you thought of using a Dell form of a linux distro to boost your sales kind of like what Apple has done?  Dell could advertise it as being almost free from viruses and it would lower Dell's cost in producing computers.  People are a little afraid of linux but if Dell used their own form of it with Dell standing behind the OS then maybe it would build sales just as Apple has.

all around home By g8963red,  Aug 26, 2010

We all have wireless but we all don't want a laptop. We want a Dimension or other full sized computer. But you cant freely move about your Owen home. So if you combine the key board and the monitor with mouse and camera[ like a folding notepad] and give it a wireless connection to the computer you can move freely about your home and still have the computer on your table. As the computer would do its job as normal you would not have the same cooling problems, as you are only moving the monitor and key pad wirelessly  about your home.

Improve the ordering system to allow changes By enkotec,  Aug 26, 2010

Currenty when you place an order for anything - systems, peripherals, accessories - the second you press the "Submit" button, you're locked in.  There is no option to change the shipping method, or add items, or cancel the order.  The only recourse is to call the "Customer Service" line and talk to Joe in Bangladesh, who invariably says that it's too late to change anything (even though I just clicked "Submit" less than 15 minutes ago...)

I'm all for making sure your order is accurate before submitting it, but sometimes you make a mistake.  It would be nice if Dell could get to the same level as Amazon and allow us to make changes to shipping, billing and item options after the order is submitted.

Haptics Keyboard By michaelvman,  Aug 26, 2010

A keyboard with non physical keys using a single surface implemented with haptics technology. Keyboards are a nest for germs and it is easy for dust and crumbs to get between the keys. With a haptics key surface the keyboard would be made from one flat surface that could have vibration touch sensing to simulate the feel of touching a button and would be a lot easier to keep clean.

Here is an example of such technology in use http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6Mvl7qex-M skip to around 1.30
