Studio Mini By Fjosech,  Jan 21, 2010

There should be a 10 inch version of the studio with better features then the regular mini and with the design of the studio (the way the screen is attached, metal dell symbol, etc...).

increase laptop screen visibility in daylight By monsterpix,  Mar 11, 2010

In principles, LCD screens of laptops do not emmit a lot of light and therefore, if used outdoors the display is not as bright and clear as in darker indoors. It is especially importnat in netbooks which are going to be the new "notebooks" as people start use them for genral note taking and off-office work.

The idea is rather simple, have a semi transparent back behind the screen, this semi transparent back will allow light from behind to enter from behind and light the screen, so in case someone sit in a bright light, the reflected light from behind will increase the brightness of the screen without the need to increase the LCD built in illumination.

best

Pre-configure Ubuntu, and let people know about it By swhite,  Mar 18, 2010

This might be done already, but I can find no mention on the Dell web site.  So...on the Ubuntu netbooks,

1.  Preinstall Skype and make sure it works with the camera.

2.  Preinstall an instant message program that works with the camera, for video chatting.

3.  Preinstall Open Office or Star Office.

4.  Look for other applications that people commonly use, and make sure that they are preinstalled.

5.  Make sure that the preinstalled applications actually work.  This seems obvious, but on other distributions, I have had the situation of finding some application, trying to run it, and having nothing happen.  If an open-source application is buggy, or clumsy, or obscure, that is not Dell's problem, but you should at least make sure they run.

6.  Indicate on your web site that these applications are installed.  You do that for some; you can't do it for thousands, but you could do it for a couple dozen common ones.

I bought myself an ASUS eee pc.  I might not have done it, but I got one through work, for work, and I was able to see what it could do.  Even with that, it was not clear from my research that the upgraded model I got for myself would do the same things.  But at that time, it was even less clear if the competitors (Dell, Lenovo) could do those things.  So I went with something that PROBABLY would work, and, fortunately it did.

There are a lot of people who can't afford to do too much experimenting.  They want to know that something will work before they purchase it.  Some reassurance would, I think, translate to an increase in sales.

Thank you.

nVidia ION option on all ultraportables By podsnap,  Mar 25, 2010

Dell need to offer the nVidia ION (or even better ION2) GPU on all their ultraportables and netbooks (especially on the Inspiron 'z' series).

The intel chipsets are woefully underpowered.

If I could get an ION GPU in the 11z or 13z, for example, I'd buy one instantly.

Dell Inspiron mini feedback By okupin,  Mar 28, 2010

So, I've owned a mini since they came out (yep, I have one of the first generation w/ no VGA port, much to my surprise and consternation). I use it all the time and love it, but I've had a particularly interesting experience while using it in public--I get approached by people asking questions about it, every single time I'm sitting at a coffee house or in any public place. These people are invariably men, and all except one have been 50+ years in age. They ask me for the specs and how I like the mini and then excuse themselves w/ an apology for troubling me.

So, I thought I'd let you guys at Dell know I'm selling product for you ;) and also the interested demographic. I should also mention that several have commented on the short battery life and the lack of DVD drive. They seem to want something that lets them surf, email, AND use media on a longer flight. I don't think most folks are going to go through the effort at this point to download movies before they leave--they still just use DVDs. I use the mini for a very specific purpose (I'm a professor who does a lot of remote writing and archival research, so I use Word and EndNote mostly), but most people who ask me about it seem to want better a better media interface.

They've all been impressed with the weight and dimensions, the size of the hard drive, and the processing speed (relative to other netbooks). I would say if you focus on upgrading one of these things (in addition to the battery life), it should be the processor.

Hope that helps. Typed on my netbook, but not at a coffee shop, or obviously I'd be busy selling this thing and not getting any work done....

10" Dell Tablet Netbook By iamnotjamesh,  Apr 11, 2010

User-added image
Dell needs to  get into the tablet business and catch up fast.  The Latitude XT2 just doesn't cut it, too expensive because its using a full processor.  A netbook tablet is the way to go as the iPad is underpowered and underfeatured.  Keep the priceline at $500.  Have rotating touchscreen, Windows 7 Home Premuim, and an Atom processor (to start).  Have the portability of a tablet and the power of a netbook.  The capability of a device as a actual laptop computer and tablet will be killer.  The future of portable computing is a merge between tablet/ netbook becaues people will realize the need for more power and an actual keyboard like Asus has done with its 10" netbook tablet with a rotating screen.

Promote please...Dell needs to get into the tablet netbook business.

Dell should preinstall Microsoft Security Essentials instead of Mcafee By ward733,  Apr 13, 2010

Microsoft has been providing free antivirus, spyware, and firewall protection since the discontinuation of the Microsoft OneCare Live software. Who could better make a basic light antivirus software than the people that make your operating system. You don't have alot of the bells and whistles because this is a lighter version of the enterprise edition, but all I need is protection from hackers, viruses, and spyware. I have been using this software for almost eight months and have not had any issues. You can download for free with a valid OS here http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ If you would like help improve the software then agree in the setup.

Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware By gergnz,  Feb 19, 2007

I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!!

DELL/ Status Update
Drivers are available for Linux to make some but not all hardware work. We continue to work with our partners to provide for better hardware support. See more specifics from john_h.

Refurbishing of Dell Computers By tjandkimi,  Aug 16, 2010

Why not outsource the refurbishing of your computers, laptops and desktops, to local companies in and around the area in which the computers are sold. For instance, if someone buys a Dell laptop from Nevada, and issues arise regarding the laptop, then the laptop would be sent to a service center in Nevada to be refurbished and then either sold online through the dell.com site or returned directly to the customer. Since this refurbishing center would be a sub contractor, it would allow for Dell’s profit margin to expand 337%. Basically what you spend in a month, you would now spend in a year. This would also allow great exposure for Dell in every state as a local employer and drive positive cash flow, retention and marketshare in all realms of Dell’s resale division

Prefer to buy ATI discrete graphics than Nvidia. By Rebel333,  Mar 10, 2010

I like Dell computers very much and I recently buy new laptops to work on it and enjoy it. But many times there is no option for my needs. Like I would like to buy a Latitude with ATi discrete graphics, but only option is Intel and sometimes Nvidia graphics. Intel is ok for those one who are using it only works, but many of us doing everything on our laptops; work, multimedia and even games. Therefore we need Nvidia or ATI. However Nvidia's are not so modern nowadays so I would prefer ATI discrete in the upcoming Latitudes!
Intel<Nvidia<Ati.
Keep the Slim & Beautiful shape like your new Vostro 3000 laptops, but add ATI discrete graphics option to customizing them. Thanks!

Make sure your discount coupons to "valued customers" won't irritate those customers By michaeloppen,  Jul 26, 2010

I'm a regular Dell customer with four Dell computers currently functioning. Recently I received a cheerful card announcing "Here's $15 off to thank you for being a valued customer." It added that I could apply it to "electronics or accessories." Great, I thought. I need another printer cartridge. So I ordered one only to learn that cartridges aren't included in the offer. And there was a long list of other exceptions. That struck me as tacky. You should have a talk with your marketing department. If you want to offer a gift to faithful customer like me, make sure it's a genuine gift.

16:10 resolutions should be offered on more laptops (or continued to be offered on 17 inch laptops) By belomeclone,  Sep 16, 2009

I can understand shrinking the laptop screen size on smaller laptops for aesthetics, but I miss the extra room on top. And while I guess the days of 15 inch 16:10 laptops are gone, at least assure that they stay around on 17 inch laptops.

But if the community likes the idea, maybe we could offer more 15, 16, 14 inch screen sizes at a normal 16:10 resolution.

Updates for people with Latex sensitivity or allergies By ggang,  Jun 15, 2009

Many healthcare workers are becoming sensitive or allergic to latex (due to the high use of latex gloves) and are switching to latex free gloves. The OEM that manufactures the touch pad used in Dell latitude should provide information on the use of latex to manufacture the touch pad.

This could be helpful for purchasing decisions. Any comments would be welcome.

solve the problems of xps 1645 By basilisk,  Jul 9, 2010

I want to say that the severe problem of throttling and overheating in studio xps 16 series which persists even after the recent bios update and supply of 130w adapter needs to be solved immediately because they are seriously denting the brand value of xps 16. As i have noticed, more and more xps customers are moving away in search of better laptops and those who remain are suffering a lot because of the occurrence of above mentioned problems in such a costly laptop series. Dell needs to understand that this is also affecting their business because there is an ever-increasing demand for the replacement of these affected laptops. The truth is that replacement is of little help because the fault lies in the built of xps 16. There should be much better ventilation for cooling purpose because at present the open lid of the laptop blocks the air-vent and no one can work with a laptop with the lid closed! Also the throttling problem continues because the system is still unable to take the full advantage of 130w adapter. Dell should seriously think about it instead of knowingly denying the fact that the above problems exist on a global scale.

hard disk choice in optiplex range By mbhmirc,  Aug 9, 2010

Make SSD and 10k RPM disks standard in the optiplex range including the 380.  The SSD used to be there but it was pulled and only in the 780.  If dell is a custom pc maker surely we should have some level of choice from available parts in other ranges.

Improving conference devices By SSTakeda,  Aug 14, 2010

Dell could enhace devices/sensors as the ones used by  Nintendo Wii to be used in remote presentations. The presenter could use such devices as a "laser pointer". The device would also work as a mouse and the people watching the presentation remotelly could follow where the presenter is pointing to.
