This might be done already, but I can find no mention on the Dell web site. So...on the Ubuntu netbooks,
1. Preinstall Skype and make sure it works with the camera.
2. Preinstall an instant message program that works with the camera, for video chatting.
3. Preinstall Open Office or Star Office.
4. Look for other applications that people commonly use, and make sure that they are preinstalled.
5. Make sure that the preinstalled applications actually work. This seems obvious, but on other distributions, I have had the situation of finding some application, trying to run it, and having nothing happen. If an open-source application is buggy, or clumsy, or obscure, that is not Dell's problem, but you should at least make sure they run.
6. Indicate on your web site that these applications are installed. You do that for some; you can't do it for thousands, but you could do it for a couple dozen common ones.
I bought myself an ASUS eee pc. I might not have done it, but I got one through work, for work, and I was able to see what it could do. Even with that, it was not clear from my research that the upgraded model I got for myself would do the same things. But at that time, it was even less clear if the competitors (Dell, Lenovo) could do those things. So I went with something that PROBABLY would work, and, fortunately it did.Â
There are a lot of people who can't afford to do too much experimenting. They want to know that something will work before they purchase it. Some reassurance would, I think, translate to an increase in sales.
Thank you.
