Netbook Backlit Keyboard & Pointing Stick By BrianG,  Jan 13, 2010

Please build netbooks (at least in the Latitude series) that have a backlit keyboard and pointing stick included.  I don't know of any manufacturer that has either, let alone BOTH of these features available on a netbook!

I'm holding off on buying a netbook until I get both of these features as I've used a Pointing Stick since IBM came out with it (I can't use Track Pads for regular mouse control as I use the mouse a lot and it wears out the tip of my finger unlike the Pointing Stick which doesn't).  I've also been asking Dell for backlit keyboards for 3 years before they came out on the E-Series and I was really impressed and happy with the implementation!

Ideally I'd love to see these features offered for every notebook and netbooks, but at least be consistent with the Latitude series.  And yes, I'm willing to pay more for a netbook with a backlit keyboard and pointing stick as it make the experience MUCH more enjoyable!  Thanks!

Ubuntu Linux should cost less then Windows and be available on Netbooks. By tkeith,  Oct 30, 2009

Dell was the first major computer vendor to offer Linux, for which it was praised.  However, the Ubuntu option is now gone from arguably it's best implementation, Netbooks, and where available it costs $50-100 more then Windows.  I was told by support that it was because it costs Dell more, then told it was because people were buying Ubuntu and not liking it.  Neither excuse makes sense, Ubuntu is free to install and people were not properly notified nor given any training information about Ubuntu and the differences from Windows.

2GB Ram Upgrade Option for Dell Mini 10's with Ubuntu. By w1ng3dkn1ght,  Nov 23, 2009

As understood, Dell Mini 10's are restricted to only 1GB of ram due to the agreement with Microsoft and the use of Windows XP on the Mini's. It is unfair for those who want to buy Ubuntu and are restricted to 1GB of ram. I understand that Ubuntu is open source software, and that Dell is not in any kind of ram restriction agreement with Ubuntu. So I think it would be fair to add a 2GB ram upgrade option for those who want a Dell Mini with Ubuntu on it.

For this reason, I haven't brought a Dell Mini. Many people as well have decided for now not to buy a Dell Mini 10 because of this. I really don't want to start looking else where for a Netbook.

I hope the community and dell employees revise this idea and implement it. Thank you everyone for taking the time to read this.

NOTE: I apologize if this was seen elsewhere, I did not select any categories in which to this goes.

DELL MINI :- Why not 2gb ram and 250gb hard disk in INDIA By ADARSH,  Dec 28, 2009

Recently i saw saw dell mini 10v and really liked it. i wanted to gift it to my fiancee. but when i enquired about the configuration over the net found out that dell mini just has 1gb ram and 160gb hard disk where as in Singapore , middle east the config varies like 2gb ram and 250gb hard drive.  I Believe these days 1gb of ram is not sufficient and 160 GB of hard drive either. i believe ill see mini with 2gb ram and 250gb hard drive very soon and i could gift it to my fiancee.

Studio Mini By Fjosech,  Jan 21, 2010

There should be a 10 inch version of the studio with better features then the regular mini and with the design of the studio (the way the screen is attached, metal dell symbol, etc...).

Install USB Stick By delphiking1980,  Dec 30, 2009

I've got an Dell Inpirion Mini 10:

To Reinstall this Netbook you must have an external CD/DVD Drive.

My Idea is: The CD/DVD with Drivers and Utilitys and the Operationsystem on an Bootable USB-Stick.

DO AWAY WITH THE GLOSSY FINISH ON THE INSPIRON/MINI CASES. FINGERPRINTS EVERYWHERE! By dsudar,  Dec 7, 2009

Don't usually take the time to post on products, but this is different.  I purchased a Dell Inspiron 15 for my boss and it arrived today.  The shiney shell is beautiful until you touch it.  This is impractical for everyday use as smears and smudges will detract from the overal beauty of the laptop.  I am constantly having to wipe this thing down..... Not something I should have to concern myself with when purchasing electronics.....

Netbook with entire keyboard as dynamic touch surface By InvaderAz,  Jan 21, 2010

Imagine the Mini 10 without a physical keyboard, it's just a capacitive touch surface with a monochrome LCD underneath.  The LCD shows a keyboard when you want to type with a track pad. Except the track pad is resizable. And you can swipe the num-pad into view etc.  Just have a number of virtual input device pages.

Sure this isn't a new idea. However I think it could achive what the hyped Courier could do and be cheap and easy to bring to market much sooner because surely a simple monochrome display under a touch surface is pretty cheap to make now?

I'd like Logitech to make one of these for my Workstation too?  It could let me design my own interface pad for a specific game. License the API for input schemas for specific apps.

Further more if you can make the hinge robust enough it could swing all the way around to clip behind. And the device could operate as a slate/tablet without your fingers getting in the way of what I'm looking at. They are used below.

Another form factor to experiment with is the like the phones with slide out keyboards. There could be notches to slide it out say just an inch or two if all you need to do is turn the page etc.

I'd like it to allow the stylus as well for One Note use too. That is handy for work. Although what I really need is One-Note with Dabbleboard style drawing.

It's better than an oversized iPhone because I already have an iPhone.  This is for real work. For me that means I still need Windows for now at least.

Anyone else want one of these?  (And not years away  like Courier seems to be)

Netbook Smartphone Support (REDFLY) By BrianG,  Jan 13, 2010

Can you provide REDFLY or REDFLY-like support of smartphones on your netbooks and even notebooks?  I know a REDFLY is supposed to be a less-expensive netbook/notebook, but it's really not much less than netbooks these days and I'd love to have the functionality of both REDFLY and a netbook/notebook all-in-one (think dual-boot for energy savings)!  Since REDFLY is planning to support Google Android and I know you're realeasing an Android phone, this would be a nice match!  Specifically though, I'm looking for WinMobile support, not Android support, but REDFLY already supports WinMobile.

Dell Mini Nickalodian Edition By BrodeurPC,  Nov 28, 2009

I believe that the Dell Mini Nickalodian edition, should have the EduUbuntu operating system or the Ubuntu Netbook Remix. If this netbook was intended for the younger generation of the computing world, Ubuntu and Linux in general is safer, faster, and more robust than Windows. The EduUbuntu has some really nice programs for learning and schools. The Ubuntu Netbook Remix seems to perform much faster than Windows does on the minis and gives the user more to do an more to choose from.

If I try to buy a Mini 10 from Mexico, the ubuntu version is more expensive than the windows one.

If I choose the same components (mainly 1.6Ghz processor), this is what I get:
Windows $5799 Mexican Pesos
Ubuntu $6286 Mexican Pesos

Come one!
Ubuntu version should be cheaper!!

4:3 instead of 16:9 By elsamuko,  May 20, 2009

These are netbooks and not movie books, and the internet is not in movie format. The more vertical resolution, the better I can surf the net.

Please remove your marketing departement which still believes that mirroring 16:9 format screens are usable for something and return to usable 4:3 screen proportions.

Same with stand alone screens. As long as there are only widescreens in the sub 300 Euro region, I have to stay with my 1600x1200 CRT.

WiMAX card available in at least ALL netbooks line By Consul,  Jan 3, 2010

As WiMAX becomes widely available in major cities, not offering the card is certainly a shortcoming comparing to other vendors like Lenovo.

As netbooks are supposed to deliver the best mobility experience, they must find a way to make a WiMAX card to fit under the hood.

A Docking Station for the Dell Inspiron Mini / Dell E / Dell E Slim By brokencrystal,  Jun 29, 2008

It would be nice if an optional docking station were available for the Dell Inspiron Mini / Dell E / Dell E Slim. It could include an optical CD/DVD-RW drive, an eSATA port, an internal SATA notebook drive, VGA/DVI ports, USB ports, an Ethernet port, microphone/headphone ports, an express card slot, and anything else that cannot fit in the mini notebook.

dell 14" laptop promotion By jackaw,  Dec 7, 2009

 hello,

since school is going to re-open soon,
strongly suggest Dell to continue 14" laptop promotion,
so that students can get good deals for their study.
in november 2009 I saw a promotion $750 for 14" laptop,
strongly believe can continue this type of promotion (or maybe Dell can sell it at lower price?),
pls help to look into.
