Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot By dhart,  Feb 16, 2007

Offer the 3 top free Linux versions for free pre-installation on all Dell PCs.

Quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. For example OpenOffice.org, the Microsoft Office alternative, can shave hundreds of dollars off the price of a new PC. Cast your vote for OpenOffice and other free software.

Offer easy multi-boot options with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or NO Windows (yes, Linux can entirely replace Windows!)

Offer trade-ins and Linux CDs for older model Dell PCs. Cast your vote for the mini Linux Dell PC and the Universal Education Dell PC, both utilizing free software.

Would you try Linux if it were this easy?

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Make the dell ubuntu models available through the main webpage By rajeevbhatta,  Jun 19, 2007

Instead of having the model listings on a different webpage ( www.dell.com/open) have these models available from the product search you have on the main page or a link available through the main page (www.dell.com)

When I go to dell.com and I search for the product model numbers I never can find them I have to go to the other page and then I see it. The only thing I saw on the main page is a small flash ad which then takes you to the page.

Why cant you place these models with the other models on your page.........

Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware By gergnz,  Feb 19, 2007

I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!!

DELL/ Status Update
Drivers are available for Linux to make some but not all hardware work. We continue to work with our partners to provide for better hardware support. See more specifics from john_h.

Integrated/discrete gpu BIOS option or AMD gpu instead of nVidia By aeternal,  May 14, 2011

We already know that nVidia won't support Optimus for linux.
The minimum that Dell could do about it is add a switch option in the BIOS. Option that allows to chose which one between Internal GPU  and external GPU you want to use, disabling the other. Don't say it's "impossible" because Lenovo Thinkpads already allow it, so I think Dell should do the same. It's a shame, you buy a laptop but you can't use a part of it because of this "optimus" thing. I think this is the minimum we can ask. (I blame nvidia, not dell clearly)

If you really don't want to do this either, at least add the possibility to configure (at least vostro 3750 or latitude e6520) with an ATI graphic card  and not just with nVidia. There are still problems, but Linux community already found a solution for ATI ones.

Pressure Nvidia to support Optimus on Linux By shiningarcanine,  Mar 8, 2011

Many people in the Linux community want Nvidia to support Optimus on Linux, but it seems that features like this only come to Linux when a vendor pressures Nvidia to do it as part of a purchasing deal. Dell has significant enough influence that they could pressure Nvidia to support Optimus on Linux. Using Dell's influence to bring Optimus support to Linux would generate a great deal of positive press for Dell in the Linux community and cost relatively little in comparison.

Provide the Option for ATI or NVIDIA accelerated Graphics on all Ubuntu GNU/Linux offerings By shannon_vanwagner,  May 5, 2010

When I come looking for a computer with Ubuntu GNU/Linux preloaded, I also look for the option to upgrade to an accelerated graphics adapter such as ATI or NVIDIA. There are proprietary drivers available for both of these types of graphics accelerators.

GNU/Linux users like to play 3d games with Wine and even native Linux games, please provide us the enhanced graphics for which to do so.

For a good example of how many games can be run on Linux see JakeJW93's channel on youtube.

Cheers!

Bring Back the Ubuntu GNU/Linux Desktop Option By shannon_vanwagner,  May 5, 2010

Hey there.. What happened to the option for Ubuntu GNU/Linux preloaded on the Desktop?

I bought a Dell Inspiron 530n from you awhile back, see my blog about it entitled "Dell Inspiron 530n, NVIDIA 9400GT, and Ubuntu GNU/Linux preloaded. One word - AWESOME!!" and I've been very happy with it. Of course I bought an add-on PNY NVIDIA 9400GT graphics card and installed it for 3d games (this should be an option when purchasing the machine from Dell vote for it here ).

How come I can no longer buy a Desktop with Ubuntu GNU/Linux preloaded? I see a lot of very nice deals for Desktops on the Dell website but I flatly refuse to pay for any of them unless they come with GNU/Linux preloaded.

Please bring it back!

Cheers!

Make Dell Ubuntu PCs available to businesses and non-profits By wyleyr,  Jun 20, 2007

Dell is apparently not yet willing to sell Ubuntu-based PCs to business users, non-profits, or other organizations larger than a "home office." See this Ubuntu forum thread for more:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=478975

If Dell is serious about offering "choice" to consumers -- the main reason that they're offering up Ubuntu -- they ought to offer it to all their customers, including commercial and non-profit organizations.

Perhaps the greatest barrier here is that these other customers often require different support contracts than home users. It wouldn't be necessary to offer the same support options to organizations that purchase Ubuntu PCs as are offered to home users, or to organizations that purchase Windows PCs. (Perhaps Dell doesn't need to offer any support at all, except for hardware; as long as Canonical can support these organizations.) But they ought to at least have the option of buying the boxes, even if they have to get support in a different way.

Legal Blueray Playback on Ubuntu By prisma,  Jan 9, 2008

Ubuntu have a legal way to play DVD's with LinDVD on current Dell hardware offers which we the customers appreciate. However, windows hardware products come with an option to add a blueray player. Dell should add that option as well to their Ubuntu offers. A commercially available piece of software (like LinDVD) could be implemented to play blueray DVDs.

Improve Dell's Linux repository; Support Ubuntu better. By gjc,  Aug 19, 2008

Did you know that Dell has software repositories for Linux? It does. But they are only maintained by the community and only contain RPMs.

They are poorly documented and feel sloppy in general. I ran into problems while trying to use the firmware repository. I saw this message too much: "Couldn't find any package whose name or description matched..."

Dell should actively support this repository. It is a great idea! A well maintained software repository from Dell would be a real blessing to all of us Linux users with their computers.

It is not that hard to setup a standard Debian repository. Look at how Google or Wine have theirs setup.

More accurate Linux count By toaster53,  Jan 6, 2011

Many people buy computers with Windows on it and then install Linux. This may lead manufacturers such as Dell to the wrong conclusions about demand for machines with Linux. Even when Ubuntu is available for some machines, customers may buy a different model with Windows on it for hardware reasons. For example, I am planning to buy a 13 inch Vostro, but the Ubuntu model with a Celeron processor is too slow, so I will probably have to get a model with Windows on it, even though I will never use Windows. It is very important for me to have a computer that runs Linux, and it is great to have a manufacturer who officially supports Ubuntu (I have successfully installed Linux on over different 10 laptops, but it is a gamble every time). But how can I let the manufacturer know that I am buying their products because of Linux when they see me buying a Windows model?

I am not sure how the accurate count can be done - ideas..?

Please support Optimus and Nvidia in Linux (Suse) on Vostro 3500 By linuxbernhard,  Mar 4, 2011

Hello,
I need to have a driver, supporting the new optimustechnology in linux, in my case for Suse11.3.
Al least a BIOS-upgrade with possibility to switch on the nvidida-chip would help a lot.
Is there any prioritiy to make this possible?

Isn't it time for a Dell Linux Division? By CriticalThinker,  Apr 21, 2011

First me: I am a semi-retired quality-management consultant living on South Beach. I am not that geeky but I have been relying on Linux since Redhat 7.x. I have been using Fedora since it "spun off" from RH 9. Maybe I'm just too cheap frugal to buy Windows. Seriously, because of the lower overhead (much lower) Linux provides other economies as well. I stopped dual booting about eight years ago and I haven't spent a nickel on software in all that time. That includes runnig a website on a colocated server (LAMP is still the defacto standard).

It really bothers me that I have to continue to pay a Microsoft Tax every time I purchase a new machine. I don't want Windows. I don't want MS Office. I don't want McCaffee. I don't want, or need, any of the software that gets budled onto machines. That all this stuff is included in the price doesn't mean that we are not paying for it. Just to be clear; I don't need it or want it and I resent paying for it.

It drives me to distraction that I cannot go into a store and purchase a clean Dell with no junk. I am just goiing to reformat the entire drive the Ext 2, swap and Ext 4 anyway. Indeed, I cannot find a clean laptop on the Dell website anymore.

Reverting to form, quality is achieved when the organization is foucsed on the best interests of its customers first, last and always. Forcing me to purchase stuff that I do not need or want does not depict quality. I fully recognize that MS pressures OEMs. They are only pushing more users to *nix.

Servers for Home/Home Office Users By SParis,  Mar 28, 2011

I do not have a Dell business account - I have a Dell Preferred account.  Dell Preferred Accounts are targeted to consumers and consultants like myself while the Business Account is really only for businesses.

But I'm a developer. I do a LOT of Java work, sample web sites, MySQL databases, servlets and so on.  I really need and want a tower server for my home work - something like the T110 or T310.  I don't need a super heavy-duty 1U rack mount with severe power needs, redundant power supplies, RAID 10 and so on.  But I need something more substantial than a desktop and I need Centos or Ubuntu (or similar) Linux - not Windows Server.

Why can't you offer a few small, but powerful, tower servers in the Home/Home Office store for sale using our Preferred Accounts?  You could sell many of those systems to people like myself.  It's a lost sales and revenue opportunity to Dell and inconvenient to end users like myself (I know, I can buy, but I have to charge to a regular credit card, not the Preferred Account). I do not understand the reasoning wy Dell does not sell these systems in the Home/Home Office category.

Make Linux specific downloads easier to cut 'n paste By RCook,  May 6, 2011

There needs to be a simplified, read no Java encapsulated, download link for Linux admins. Specifically the Dell DSET tool, I needed to download this today. While I could have downloaded it to my desktop and then ftp/scp/etc it to the server it was easier to just cut and paste the download link and then edit the link (strip out java garbage) and download the tool via wget. It would have been much simpler if there was a direct d/l link that I could have pasted into my ssh session without the editing.

N-Series laptops, where did they go? By shadowmind,  Jan 26, 2011

Apart from the 10" notebooks, what happen to the n-Series Latitudes that we were able to purchase on the Federal sales side last year? Forcing government agencies to purchase computer systems with a MS OS is double dipping the OS sales for both Dell and Microsoft.

Microsoft went through a lot of effort this past year to sue government into purchasing site licenses for Windows 7. Now that government has accepted the outcome and paid hundreds of millions for said site licenses, Dell double dips those sales by forcing the US government to re-purchase an OS that they already own the license for, wasting more millions in public funds. Microsoft also gets a chunk of this, which is, in all respects, a criminal activity (fraud, waste, and abuse of government funds).

This needs to stop. Dell must offer an n-Series for all of their models each refresh. Not doing so is negligence.

Ubuntu Dell Repo By tekhawk,  Jul 20, 2007

basicly a simple idea dell to support the ubuntu community a little bit by running a repo for its laptops and desktop if nothing more to support the software that they install on the system and to provide driver updates theses repos should be setup on the machines before shipping so that the users can get the driver updates quick and easy and offer driver on there for all the drivers that there are for dell machines that are support on linux not just the shipping lines

so that user might find that other machines then the ones you ship with ubuntu can easly be made into power ubuntu operating machines

DELL/ Status Update
As matt_d has said below, we have repositories for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora, Novell/SuSE Linux Enterprise Server, and a growing one for Ubuntu. Check it out here http://linux.dell.com.
