replace foam packaging with recycled cardboard moldings By cbautista,  Aug 17, 2010

Foam moldings may protect the shipped goods but they use up lots of room and most countries do not have the facility to recycle them.

Recycled cardboard moldings are already made of recycled material and can be recycled again, and again. looks don't matter in this case, only efficiency.

Trade In" Program By john_saddington,  Feb 19, 2007

I'd love to see a "Trade In" Program and/or initiative, where a customer who's been a long time customer could trade in an old system for a new one, or at least, a good sized discount.

I've got an old laptop and seriously need a new one. It's been out of warranty for a long time, but, would love to get a discount for a new one if I could trade it in.

This would also be environmentally healthy!

Recycle & refurbish old Dell PCs back to Dell for 10% discount By reg,  May 18, 2007

Recycle your old Dell back to Dell for a 10% discount on new equipment. Dell can then secure overwrite erase the hard drive, install Ubuntu + hardware drivers, then donate the hardware to unemployment, food stamp, and welfare offices Nationwide. The social services offices then can pass out the refurbished used equipment to its clients, and Dell can be given BIG tax breaks by the State and Federal Systems.

1. Recycle - Turn it in, don't landfill it.
2. Reuse - There is still life left in that old hardware
3. Reduce - Buy new electronics less often, get 5 years use out of every PC.
4. Refuse - wasteful spending, wasteful practices & wasteful companies.
5. Refute - Once wasteful practices or procedures are identified, correct the problem with Action!

Using Green Materials By alienhead,  Aug 23, 2010

Lately I'm seeing alot of computer parts such as hard drives or memory being created mostly of recycled materials. I think this is something that can really benefit dell and users together. If computers that customers bought were using more green and environmental aware equipment it can really benefit in the money tdell saves and what the consumer saves, I think that a green option hard drive, memory, etc. should be available in the customization process of choosing a computer. When it comes to hard drives, Seagate for instance is making wonderful hard drives that created out of 70% recycled materials.

Sell more desktops without monitors, keyboards, etc By gordonbrown77,  Feb 16, 2007

Make it an option to not get things people may already have when upgrading a PC such as monitors, mouse, keyboard. This would be good environmentally and save people some money if they already have theae things and will not be keeping the old PC.

Environmental Laptop Based on Solar Energy/Hydrogen Fuel Cell By gchakra,  Feb 17, 2007

What's smart for the environment is smart for Dell. Dell should build units that are degradable or can be easily recycled. Sure, its going to be a little more expensive, but it will be a smart product. It will use a lot less energy. The laptops could have a solar panel or be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The first microelectronic implementation of a fuel cell will give Dell a tremendous marketing boost. It will be incredibly popular with kids in college.

Laptop Battery Replacement By win,  Aug 3, 2010

It's nice if dell would be able to replace our laptop battery for a discount when we exchange or trade in our "bad" battery. Dell could then recycle or safely dispose those bad batteries. Afterall, Dell is all for the environment right?

Recycling Gray Styrofoam. By erinegrimm,  Jun 10, 2010

I work for the City of Salem's Information Technology department and we receive about 300 boxes of computer equipment  a year from Dell which has 2 pieces of styrofoam which are 16x6x7.5.  This adds up to 600 pieces that have to go to a landfill. In the past Dell used the stryrofoam that snapped  and  is recyclable now. The styrofoam that is now being used by Dell can not be recycled. It is my hope or suggestion that we ship the styrofoam back to Dell so they may reuse it. This way everyone  wins. As a Earthwise member we are looking to make a difference in our environment and be a part of the solution.

Dell solar laptops By petzymathuram,  Feb 26, 2009

- Solar panels with efficient photovoltaic cells can be installed on the top of the laptops
- The solar panels can be dismantled for charging it in sunlight or kept firmly attached to the laptops
- The heat transfer units of the solar panels can be connected to the power supply system of the laptops
- Remote areas without power supply or with minimum power supply can opt for the solar laptops
- Green conscious customers can prefer the Dell solar laptops
- Dell solar laptops enables its user to save energy

(something different from the solar laptop chargers and solar battery chargers)

Significantly Reduce Packaging on ALL Dell Products By smotchberry,  Feb 4, 2008

Dell should reduce the amount of packaging used in most, if not all of it's products. While I can be critical of companies like Apple a lot of the time, one area in which they are really making strides in is reducing the amount of packaging used in almost all their products to the bare minimum - while still retaining a substantial amount of the rigidity a bulkier box might have had.

Just recently, a friend of mine got shipped his Inspiron in a box that was quite easily twice the size of the box the accompanying, and physically, much larger printer was shipped in. Even my 12" XPS M1210 was shipped in (not one, but two!) boxes larger than the size of the average desktop computer.

Dell has certainly made some significant strides in re-inventing it's product line, and it is time that innovation follows through to the rest of the customer experience.

Unnecessarily bulky packaging is not only bad for the environment, it can also tend to affect the customer experience too - having a series of boxes, sheets and Styrofoam between them getting the hands on their new product can make the slightest bit of a difference.

As an added bonus, with your products taking up less space, you stand to make significant savings in terms of warehouse storage and shipping costs. Getting more products out to the consumer faster, while being cheaper for you to!

Ideastorm members are welcome to submit pictures of similar packaging experiences too! Let's make this happen!

If you do mark this article down, do let me know why!

Dell should recycle packaging. By godssax,  Jul 23, 2009

This summer we have ordered 150 new computers and was left with 300 boxes, plus enough styrofoam and plastic wrap to insulate a small house once everything was unpacked.

Would it be possible, with Dell's new recycling program to maybe take back the empty packaging from computers and monitors and reuse, or at least recycle?

Could Dell Own Green? By adrian,  Feb 1, 2007

Environmental concern and sustainability are today real issues with consumers and voters in many of Dell's markets. It looks as if a genuine commitment to reducing carbon and cleaning up their footprint will become a more important factor for companies wanting to strengthen consumer loyalty in the coming years.

Dell has already made its environmental commitment clear. My suggestion is that this could become a hallmark of the company - why not make the products, literally, green? If Apple can own 'pretty' and IBM/Lenovo can own 'serious', why can't Dell own 'green'?
DELL/ Status Update
Dell continues to do a lot to support our environment like our Plant a Tree for Me program and other activities documented on our Environment blog on Direct2Dell. Click here for more details.

Software readable power-meter in Dell computers. By jmxz,  Dec 21, 2007

I'd really like a software readable power sensor inside Dell computers that could tell me things like "now drawing 350 Watts".

This would be useful for a number of things.
  • Environmental benefits - It can let me see how much benefit there is by telling my disks to spin down when idle; or by disabling 3D effects in my GUI. Based on those results I can decide whether or not they're worth using.  even just seeing how much power it draws might make me want to power it down more.
  • More reliable upgrades - It can show me if I have the power capacity to upgrade to some of the new graphics cards that consume very high power; or to add another hard drive to the 5 i already have.
  • Reduced customer support costs - If someone does try to  a bit more power from their power supply than it supports, it results in hard to diagnose intermittent failures.

It seems laptops have such sensors (in their batteries?). But so far I can't find similar for desktops.

Extra points if the power sensors can isolate where the power's used (i.e. 100W for CPU, 300W for hard drives, 100W for graphics card, etc).

Allow Notebook "Upgrades" - reuse old chassis, parts, cut down on waste By pkchen,  Jun 29, 2007

Any way we can get machine "upgrades" instead of having to buy a whole new computer? I notice that many of the laptop designs use the same chassis across multiple platform generations -- is there a way we can turn in our old notebook and get the guts replaced?

We'd be able to reuse not only the notebook chassis, but also the screen, keyboard, CD/DVD drive, etc. Whatever is reusable we should reuse ... and the stuff that isn't compatible w/ the upgrade ... recycle! Or reuse in someone else's notebook config. Dell could offer a discounted pricing for reusing parts ... and we wouldn't have to create as much waste as buying a completely new computer.
