coreboot (formerly LinuxBIOS) instead of proprietary BIOS By yesmathew,  Feb 20, 2007

coreboot (formerly known as LinuxBIOS) is a Free Software project aimed at replacing the proprietary BIOS (firmware) you can find in most of today's computers.
- Fast boot times 3 sec.
- Runs in 32-Bit protected mode almost from the start
- Can boot Windows too...

Stop making excuses, and start paying attention. WE WANT LINUX!!! By homer,  Feb 28, 2007

Dear Michael Dell,

By now, many people will have started reading Blogs and articles about how you have back-peddled on your commitment to listen to your customers' wishes. Here's just one:

http://blog.lobby4linux.com/archives/104-So,-How-Does-It-Feel-To-Have-Been-Ha...

[Edit] Here's a more "high profile" article, from The Inquirer:

Dell backs down from Linux promise

That makes this site (DellIdeaStorm) nothing but a farce.

First you ask us what we want, then you just blatantly ignore us. What exactly was the point in asking us what we want? Is this some kind of sick joke?

Maybe you were taken off guard, and hadn't anticipated the vast demand for Linux that happened, but it did happen, so deal with it ... or be perceived as a liar and a charlatan.

If you amalgamate all the various Linux "idea" posts on this site, and tally up the total votes, you're looking at something like TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND VOTES FOR LINUX. Are you just going to ignore that, and pretend it never happened?

Here's your response to this amazing phenomenon so far, and my comments:

We are listening, and as a result, we are working with Novell to certify our corporate client products for Linux, including our OptiPlex desktops, Latitude notebooks and Dell Precision workstations.

Well you are obviously not listening. The vast majority of the Linux requests on this site are not from "corporate" customers, they are from end users seeking home computing Linux solutions. Are you listening yet?

This is another step towards ensuring that our customers have a good experience with Linux on our systems.

It's not a step forward, it's a sidestep shuffle. What exactly are you afraid of ... that people might actually prefer Linux to Windows? I could build and "certify" a Linux workstation in 20 minutes, without the assistance of production facilities and a team of engineers, why is this such a problem for the world's biggest OEM?

Are you suggesting that Linux somehow represents a "problem" with regards to hardware, and that it's going to take a team of rocket scientists months to discover Linux compatible components?

Right now, Linux works with virtually the same hardware that WIndows XP does, and considerably more hardware than Vista ... but that doesn't seem to have prevented you "certifying" Vista (a.k.a. Windows ME2). What a joke!

As this community knows, there is no single customer preference for a distribution of Linux. In the last week, the IdeaStorm community suggested more than half a dozen distributions. We don't want to pick one distribution and alienate users with a preference for another.

No, no, no, no. That's not how it works. This is just more excuses.

At the end of the day, Linux is Linux is Linux. The distro is not that significant (other than the distinction between a commercial or community distro).

Surely the CEO of one of the world's biggest companies can make a decision.

Pick a Linux distro and run with it. And stop making excuses.

My personal preference is for Fedora Core, but if you offered an Ubuntu desktop machine, I'd buy it, because (like I said) at the end of the day it is Linux that is important, not the distro. My primary motivation is to keep my money out of Microsoft's pockets and have an OS ... any OS ... that is not Windows. I can, and probably will, switch between half a dozen distros during the lifespan of that hardware.

However, it is extremely important that you offer pre-installed Linux workstations to end-users, rather than just "OS-free" systems, because without this option, you will be helping to perpetuate the misconception that Linux is not popular. Well congratulations, you have just discovered exactly how much of a misconception this really is. Maybe you should have considered DellIdeaStorm years ago, rather than sit around waiting for point-of-sale figures that could not ever accurately reflect the popularity of something that is a free download.

Trust me ... you will not alienate anyone by making a firm choice of distro support. I'm sure the tens of thousands of home users, who are demanding Linux from Dell, will be overjoyed just to have a choice of any Linux distro.

We want users to have the opportunity to help define the market for Linux on desktop and notebook systems.

This is just nonsensical marketing gobbledegook. Say what you mean, and stop obfuscating the truth with gibberish.

You can "define" the market right now ... by selling us what we want, rather than what Microsoft dictates you sell to us. The 200000+ vote for Linux should be a clear enough "definition" for anyone ... who's prepared to listen ... and not bury his head in the sand.

In addition to working with Novell,

Bad move. By all means offer Microvell to any corporate user gullible enough to swallow Steve Ballmer's baseless FUD about Microsoft's intellectual property, but I think you'll find home users rather less than receptive to any distro offerings from any company that sleeps with the enemy.

we are also working with other distributors and evaluating the possibility of additional certifications across our product line.

This is the only promising statement in the whole response, but it sounds like a lot of hot air to me.

Actions, not words.

GIVE US LINUX!

Are you trying to rejuvenate sales or not? Give the customers what they want.

We are continuing to investigate your other Linux-related ideas, so please continue to check here for updates.

Oh I'll be sure to, but I'm not holding my breath. Microsoft has you far too firmly under their thumb for me to seriously expect any positive changes at Dell.

Thanks for giving us all a glimmer of (false) hope, though.

Become the open source OEM By ntaylor0909,  Feb 17, 2007

I read the same question on Linux forums, all the time: What is the best brand of computer/laptop to purchase for Linux. I know that there is the n series of computers and notebooks, but it could go a step further. Accept the recent offer of free Linux driver development from the Linux Kernel Community so that DELLs "just work" with Linux. Maybe look at some ideas like LinuxBIOS and/or OpenBIOS. Become the OEM that everyone recommends. There is a growing market for Open Source friendly computers and DELL could own that market.

DELL/ Status Update

In the past year, we've made a lot of progress on getting Linux to work well on all of our products. Our goal is to become the hardware vendor of choice for Linux users. Click here to learn more from john_h.

Linux Hardware Compatibility List By s3indiana,  Feb 20, 2007

Create a listing of Dell hardware that's compatible with the major Linux distributions (Fedora, OpenSuse, ubuntu, Freespire) providing compatibility with not just systems (desktops and laptops) but include peripherals (printers, camera's, flash drives, compatible routers, etc.). Include levels of compatibility so the reviewer can make an educated choice. This would provide the greatest assistance for those looking at alternatives...

We're working to add something like this to our linux.dell.com wiki. Click here to see what john_h has to say.

Submit hardware specifications to the Linux Driver Project By upstaked,  Oct 5, 2007

Back in January kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman from Novell started a project offering companies free Linux driver development.

This proved so successful that Novell made it his full-time job and turned to a project with over 200 kernel developers: http://www.linuxdriverproject.org/ .

So Dell, submit specs and convince your hardware providers to do so too. I want to spend my money on great new hardware that runs on Linux.

DELL/ Status Update

We constantly work with our hardware partners to develop and maintain open-sourced drivers. Also, we make it clear that through their own developers (or other projects like the Linux Driver Project) they need to deliver on drivers.

Extend offers like Linux pre-installation to the UK & Europe By leftcase,  May 3, 2007

First of all - well done Dell for listening to the people and making some brave decisions about the operating systems you provide your computers with.

Supplying pre-installed Linux (and XP instead of Vista for that matter) goes a good way towards giving customers what they want.

One thing that is slightly irritating however is that none of these offers are available outside of the US. Browsing through peoples comments, blogs and the Dell forums reveals that many people from the UK (for example), want the opportunity to get pre-installed Linux on their new Dell PCs.

The UK and Europe marketplace is not insignificant, and many people feel that you should extend your offer to this market too.

Add 'Firmware Update' (from cd or USB) to all BIOS By shannon_vanwagner,  Jul 20, 2010

Dell should do this like HP does..

With the new HP machines, all you do is burn the BIOS image *.bin to a cdrom, then boot the computer into setup and select "Flash Firmware". You then get to point to the CDROM for the update, the *.bin file is seen on the cd and you load it. Simple. This is the best way to do it because no external tools(especially not windows) beyond a cdrom or usb flash drive would be needed to update any system BIOS.

This way is just easier, and besides - Linux users shouldn't need a copy of windows just to update the BIOS of a system.

Build a Dell Linux Distribution By jemfisher,  Feb 20, 2007

With the wave of support for the Linux kernel to power desktop PC's, I think its time for a company with the quality build that Dell has to provide users with PC's that work for them. The adoption of Linux to power Dell PC's would give Dell a greater freedom to move forward with innovation. With the adoption of a Linux kernel Dell would be able to sell PC to meet users' demands. Businesses demand different machines than home users, students demand different machines again, machines targeted at younger users, etc.

Let us choose the OS! By icicle,  Feb 20, 2007

Sometimes I check out the new prices of DELL-Notebooks. In the section OS Selection there is only one opportunity: Windows Vista.

YOU CAN NOT DO THIS!!!

At the moment there is nothing to choose. I choose Linux (Ubuntu)!
So please, please add Linux. I will not buy a notebook and pay extra money for something I will never need. I already found a reseller offering Ubuntu-laptops...

Explain why you made Windows cheaper than Ubuntu again for the same hardware By jmxz,  Jul 7, 2007

Dell, you labeled the idea "Implemented: Ubuntu Dell is $50 Less Than Windows Dell" as "Implemented"
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/66879/Implemented_Ubuntu_Dell_is_50_Les...<a couple days later you made the Windows machine $275 cheaper than the equivalent Ubuntu machines.

Quoting jsgarvin in the comments on this idea:
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/68294/Same_discounts_available_on_Ubunt...
Just did my own 1420 vs 1420N comparison. The Windows machine comes with a free upgrade to 2GB Memory and 160GB Drive, which each cost more on the Ubuntu machine. Apparently, it's harder to install memory and hard drives on Linux??? Hmmm.. no, not that I recall. Anyway, with all the same options selected between the two machines, the Ubuntu Tax apparently is now running $275.
Just wait, it' won't be long before Dell pulls all the Ubuntu machines off the shelf and claims (again) that there's no market for Linux on home machines. Gee, wiz. I wonder why that is.

Now I know Ubuntu's a better OS; but c'mon - even I wouldn't pay a $275 premium for Ubuntu over Windows.

Or are you trying to kill the Ubuntu sales - and if so, just come out and say that?

Linux Equal Opportunity By CJay554,  Jun 21, 2010

Currently on the Dell website in order to find computers (mainly laptops or netbooks) with a Linux distribution option (mainly Ubuntu) it takes to know the hyperlink www.dell.com/ubuntu to actually find them. Even searching for Ubuntu in the dell search function brings up the first option which is a netbook, but the OS on that netbook when you further investigate is still a Windows XP.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Search "Ubuntu" in search bar.
2. Select the first option from the list: "Dell Inspiron Mini 9 - Choose this link above to see other netbook options..."
3. Click on the "Product Details" for the above option
4. Under Mini 10 click "Continue"

Under this page only one mention of Ubuntu is present: " Some netbooks offer Ubuntu operating systems that can be great for those who are tech savvy." Even the OS option for those computers are "Windows XP" or "Windows 7 Starter" with no hint as to any other option.

My problem with this is 1: Obviously whoever wrote this Doesn't understand the simplicity of the way Ubuntu is built. I've had numerous colleagues who know almost nothing about computer (barely working through Windows XP) and over an hours use of Ubuntu have become more proficient and productive than they ever were with Windows, especially with all the free software available. Even my own mother who only uses the computer for the internet and some documents can easily use Ubuntu as she used to use Windows. In fact she's discovered other software available in Ubuntu like "F-Spot" and has even started managing photo's!

My second problem is the "Beating around the bush" symptom. It is hard to even spot "Ubuntu" anywhere on Dell's site unless the consumer actually knows to look for it, so how is this in any way promotion of variety and consumer choice?

I am grateful that I was able to find Dell offering Ubuntu laptops, but the way its been organized its like they're ashamed of this. In fact I am proud of the www.dell.com/ubuntu page, it describes Ubuntu as the system that it truly is. Its just a shame that not many people will learn of these facts because its hidden in the very back.

One suggestion is to promote Ubuntu in a more visual way. Show the option for Ubuntu laptops/netbooks/PC's in one of the main drop down menus. Or include Ubuntu in the product details under the "OS" option whenever it is available.

If this is all due to manipulation from bigger companies please don't let them change your actions on promoting freedom of choice and consumer choice.

Now is the Time for Ubuntu GNU/Linux Choice on ALL Computers Please By shannon_vanwagner,  Aug 4, 2010

First of all, thanks for answering my request by bringing back the Ubuntu GNU/Linux Desktop with 3D graphics option to the http://dell.com/ubuntu site. This is very much appreciated, and I look forward to purchasing one of these machines for my use.

Now I have a new request. And I know it's been said before, but never has the time been more important. The Time is Now for having the Ubuntu GNU/Linux Choice on ALL Computers in the regular channels and in stores.

Technologists have said recently that GNU/Linux is easy to use, very secure, and a reasonable substitute for other operating systems. Please do not deny the world the lucrative choice of GNU/Linux. Please do not support the monopoly of operating systems on computers.

There has never been a more important time for Dell to show it's commitment to choice and techonological freedom. Especially since, recently, many media sites are abuzz with the question of whether Dell is solidly committed to providing GNU/Linux on the desktop. And although Dell has added a Desktop with 3d graphics option to the http://dell.com/ubuntu site, I seem to not be able to find Ubuntu as a choice for install on the regular Laptops/Netbooks/Desktops anymore. C'mon Dell, it's time to break the monopoly of operating system choice in the marketplace. And this should be done by providing Ubuntu GNU/Linux on all Dell models.

Show the way to the future Dell. Provide GNU/Linux all around please.

Thank You

Shannon VanWagner
