Larger screens on mobile phones.

For years the trend was to make cell phones smaller and smaller. With the evolution to smart phones screen sizes have grown but it is still difficult to use due to all the scrolling and zooming to view the web and other functions. Dell should do a little research and find out just how large they can make a phone and still have it held comfortably in the palm of the average person's hand. I would bet that Dell could add at least and inch to the screen. Then Dell should devote as much space as they possibly can to the touch screen. While this will not eliminate the need to scroll and zoom it will lessen the need.

With due respect to DELL's ergonomic studies, I think screen size is a question of cost.  Phones are sold by price.  It seems only Apple can buck that rule.

Once again, I didn't ask Dell to go freakishly large.  I said for them to do a study and decide what the largest possible screen size that would still be comfortable for the general public.  Its possible that cell phone screens are the size they are more due to studies on what people have asked for rather than what fits comfortably in the hand.  The trend is larger screens and if its possible to go larger and still be comfortable to hold, Dell should do it.  This will be my last explanation on this.  I can't debate on a site such as this when the other party has problems comprehending the written word.

The screens sizes for mobile phones are similar, and there's a reason for that: phone designers use the same biometric data.  If Dell wants to sell a lot of cell phones, it will be designed for the general public.

Where exactly do you get 75% from?  You didn't happen to have it tucked away in your large pants pocket did you?  :)

If you would reread my comments I said 3 x 5 sounds about right for MY use, not the general public.  Even if Dell did the research doesn't mean they used it to the fullest.  Dell made what everyone else was making because it was the safe bet and cheaper to use that size screen.

Since Dell has been working on the cell phone for a couple years, I believe that it is unfair to complain that Dell hasn't done its homework regarding the screen size.  There are voluminous human biometric data available, and Human Factor engineering folks rely on it.  Designing a phone for an "average-sized hand" is insufficient.  Phone designers use a high confidence interval (98%, for example) to assure that the phone can be effectively manipulated by a large percentage of the population, using a single hand.  A 3"x5" screen device would exclude 75% of the users.  Too, where would the average person easily carry a 3"x5"x0.5" device?  Guys would need pants with very large pockets.

To expand on the idea a bit (pun intended) try to reduce the bezel, in particular the area to the left and right of the display.  This is one of the few ways to sate our conflicting appetites for a larger screen yet smaller device.  To my eyes it also gives the device a more classy look.
I'm sure you've considered this and you must balance the design & manufacturing cost when producing a mid- to entry-level handset.  If you decide to attack the high end smartphone market, keep it in mind. :)

Exactly sugarbear.  I didn't want to give dimensions since mine may not be ideal.  I think a study on what is comfortable for most people would be necessary.  Now that sugarbear mentioned it perhaps one size for men and another for women would be appropriate.  For me I think 3 x 5 would be a comfortable size.
