A true one year warranty would begin when the customer actually has their new PC in hand, not a week or two prior.  Since the Dell warranty starts on invoice date, the customer receives one to two weeks less than the advertised one year (depending on delivery time).  This probably means nothing to either Dell or the customer from either a warranty usefulness or warranty cost perspective.  However, it does serve to annoy a lot of astute Dell customers.  Judging from the number of complaints on the Dell support forums, there are a lot of annoyed astute Dell customers.

Why not change the warranty start date to the delivery date?  Or, if that is too complicated to manage, make the warranty period one year plus two weeks to allow for delivery time.  Advertise this two week extension heavily as Dell's commitment to honesty, transparency and dedication to customer support.

Increased customer satisfaction: +++++.
Cost: negligible.
Win-win for both Dell and their customers!
