Developers can be very finicky when it comes to configuring the software tools that they want on their development machines. It would be great to have an online configuration wizard that works seamlessly as part of the ordering experience.
When I receive a new machine, I find myself spending hours uninstalling loads of apps, then installing my preferred tools. As part of Project Sputnik, it would be great if Dell would create a software tool configuration utility which is integrated with the order engine on Dell.com.
Using such a tool, developers would specify the exact tools that they want included and leave out the things that they do not want.
For example:
IDE - Choose from: Eclipse, MonoDevelop, KDevelop, jedit, etc.
DB - Choose from: MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc.
App Server - Choose from: Ubuntu Application Server, jboss, etc.
The point being that you can pre-configure your ultrabook with the exact image you want. This way when you receive it you can boot it up and be immediatly productive. This avoids the problem of either having "all" dev tools pre-installed or only the ubuntu preferred dev tools installed.
