I'm not sure if everyone will agree with this list but these are the tools I end up installing on every system I own and will ever own:

  • Git - http://git-scm.com/
  • *AMP- "Apache MySQL PHP"
  • Ruby
  • RVM - "Ruby Version Manager"
  • Rails
  • Rspec - https://github.com/rspec/rspec-rails
  • Wireshark - "http://www.wireshark.org/"
  • Tree -  for visualizing directory trees at the command line
  • Node.js
  • NPM - "Node Package Manager"
  • Grunt - an awesome build tool for JS projects!
  • Perl
  • A Text Editor that can be launched from the Command-line (Sublime Text 2!!! or TextMate)
  • ... I've got to be missing a lot but that'll get development pretty far! 

As a note, I'm pretty excited about yeoman after Google I/O 2012 but who knows when they'll release?
