SSD drive for Optiplex 390 series
I work with a large social services non-profit company advising, purchasing, and supporting their computers. They have been buying Dell Optiplex PCs for years. These machines have worked well for them with few problems. However, in the past year I have found that the available Optiplex 390 options are becoming increasingly less appropriate for their needs. The major changes that seem to occur in the Optiplex line include faster processors and larger mechanical hard drives. They certainly want the faster processor but the hard drive size is many times larger than what they need. In their environment many of the users work with files on a server or files that are stored on secure flash drives. Files stored on the local hard drive rarely require more than 1-2 GB. An 80-120GB hard drive is more than sufficient for their needs. As one tech expert pointed out this has been the year of the SSD drive. The price per GB of SSD drives has dropped significantly. The cost of an 120GB SSD drive is now about the same as a 500GB mechanical drive. In fact, I just purchased a 120GB SSD drive for $80. Unfortunately, however, Dell does not offer an SSD drive option except in higher end models at a significantly higher price. The ideal Optiplex 390 configuration for us would be everything the 390 now offers but with the option to have a 120GB SSD drive. I suspect there are other business users out there that would be interested in this option.
