so, at least there seems some attention now ;-)Of course, I would not consider the MBP perfect. So what would be perfect then?
- good open source Linux hardware support (Windows users should not have any issue with that) - Nvidia is certainly not the best choice.
- raw speed for compiler runs
- RAM extensibility for those who run multiple virtual machines - MBP is certainly not perfect in that department
- ample screen space. 1080p is absolutely crap. When you write code you write text that relates to other text sections a lot, so the more lines you get onto the screen the better. You also need a lot of additional tools at your fingertips, e.g. when debugging, or creating GUIs. I don't say that 2880x1800 is necessary, but with my current WUXGA screen I'd certainly crave for more pixels.
- it's not so much about retina or not. It's about screen space in a still portable format. 15-16" in my eyes is the best compromise. Speeking of compromises, those who want to play 3D games have to decide whether they need 3M pixels or ultimate speed, so IvyBridge's GPU should be on the menu even for such a highres display.
- slim and sleak is not the ultimate goal. Rather than having everything soldered to a PCB, add some space for sockets and extra components
- as a developer I'm not always on the hunt and I'm not constantly working on trains or in Lufthansa lounges. Mobility is some necessary extra feature (you have to go to your customers someday ...) but not the ultimate focus.
- a pre-installed software stack is completely irrelevant, and I guess that's not really Dell's sweet spot to do software development/deployment
- choice. There's no one fits all, and developers are/should be technicians who know what is good for them
btw. I used to live on the (hardware) edge until you stopped offering WUXGA displays! That's more than 3 years ago.

The minimum resolution obviously depends on the size of the screen. The question is better posed in terms of dots-per-inch (DPI):http://www.notebookcheck.net/DPI-Fineness-of-Displays.1310.0.html
I would say that, assuming that 16:9 is the format (I prefer 16:10):
11-12 inch: 1366x768 is fine; 1280x720 is the bare minimum
13-14 inch: 1600x900;
15-16 inch: 1920x1080; 1600x900 is the bare minimum
17+ inch: doesn't exist, but maybe something like a 16:9 1200p or 1300p display. 1920x1080 is the bare minimum.
If you do the math, you'll see that these values correspond to a DPI of around 130-135. Use that as a ballpark figure.

Thanks for the continued discussion here. It sounds like the consensus is that a high quality display is desired, a retina display is over and above your needs. I guess the next question would be to ask what you think the minimum resolution should be. Also since scalpel4k has clarified some on the idea we can discuss those requirements a s well.scalpel4k - it would be helpful if you could promote your last comment to an Idea Extension. That moves your comment up to a new section just for comments that you feel add value to your idea so we can spot them easier.

Cy, I looked at that Anandtech link. While there the M11x doesn't come out as bad, the Air still has twice as much contrast.And I haven't found yet a comparison of the gamut coverage, which I suspect will also favor the Air.

The most important in a good business is Commitment to Service; make something extraordinary and let people talk about it. This time Apple has done a laptop with Retina display and MSI an A10-4600M + 7970M laptop. These are today’s best IT news and their forums are full with comments.
What extraordinary Dell does? Nothing! The premium new Latitudes with 1366X screen, ignoring AMD products, using barely faster Nvidia (5200M) graphics than the standard Intel HD4000 integrated.

Since I don't own either of these machines (though, as you know, I have money burning my pocket for an Alienware...), I can't test them in detail, but I've seen them side-by-side at retail chains and the difference is clear.Merely looking at some reviews can explain why this is not just my subjective feeling. Sorry for being brutally honest, but the M11x screen is plain disgusting when compared to the Air's. See these values from notebookcheck.net:

M11x: 200
Air 11'': 355 (nearly twice as much)
Black value (cd/m^2)
M11x: 1.35
Air 11'': 0.56 (less than half as much)

new-delphi - I'm looking forward to reviews to see what kind of effect powering an extra 3 million pixels has on performance and how well heat is handled in such a small frame.
