Dell should consider sending the operating system disk with each system.
The cost to send the disk(s) when requested, Request Backup disks USA verses the cost to send this at the same the system is shipped would help to save cost. People in other Countries have to contact Dell Tech Support for the disks and they also have to e shipped, so the cost to have the disks with each system at the time of shipping would save cost.
The system is being shipped to the person and the weight of the disk should not make much of a difference with the shipping cost.

I think both should be offered Rick. Give the customer the option of choosing which one is needed, depending on their system.sugarbear Comment Link
Dell offers both types now and should keep it that way.

Teddi has suggested in the forums that Dell make the backup operating system on flash drives instead. Since some of the newer models do no have DVD Roms, an operating system on a flash drive would be a GREAT Idea.pudgyone Comment Link

" I think what Dell should do is something similiar to what Apple did with their machines as to engineer into the BIOS a way of re-downloading the OS to your computer. If this wasn't an option for Dell to implement, I would for sure be on board for the whole DVD idea, or maybe even a USB key. "If I understand correctly, you want a USB boot with network to Dell Servers for an OS re-install, could be possible in areas but that is a lot of bandwidth. It is done on Intranets (internal networks), but not always out on the net, there are still slow speed users out there - light cable internet & probably still some dial up.

This has been an on and off problem for years. I suggested a couple of years ago that all XPS units be shipped with disk or USB and it was implemented. Now we are back to no OS again.
Half the time Data Safe and Windows 7 back up do not function properly, leaving you with out the back up`s. This is not a dependable method for recovery, especially if you have to replace a hard drive.
@davmcn1, In case of hard drive failure it wouldn`t matter what was in the bios for a re=download. It would be lost with the failure.

I don't think that discs are the way to cover this kind of thing personally. I think what Dell should do is something similiar to what Apple did with their machines as to engineer into the BIOS a way of re-downloading the OS to your computer. If this wasn't an option for Dell to implement, I would for sure be on board for the whole DVD idea, or maybe even a USB key.
